PRONUNCIATION

\Vhen ~eading the imitated pronunciation, stress the part that is unde.rhned. Pronounce each syllable as if it formed pan of an Eng.hsh word, and you will be understood sufficiently wei\. ~\'o l d pauses between the syllables. The Portuguese tend to lmk the sound of a terminal vowel with the beginning of the next word. They have a 'soft' pronunciation and will often ~wallow word endings. Given this complex sound structure it IS nO.t always easy to transe.ribe Portuguese in terms of English s~el1mg. Remember the pomts below, and your pronunciation wIll be even closer to the correc t Portuguese.

PRONUI'CIATION

BRAZILI AN P ORTL"GUESE

For Brazilian Portuguese. word endings are not swallowed as in Portuguese. and \"owe! sounds arc clearly pronounced. The ao sOllnd is hea\"ily nasalised as in Portugal. The letter r at the beginning of a word is pronounced as an h so Rio (as in Rio de Janeiro) actually sounds like hee-oo. A double r , in the middle of a word. also sounds like the English h. The s as in cortes is more like a z, whereas in Portuguese it is like the English sh.

Where the Portuguese word differs from the Brazilian, the Brazilian equi\"alem has been giwn next to it, as in the following example (levamar is the Portuguese and tirar the Brazilian equi\·alem):

j As in ajoodghr ([or ajudarl: this should be sounded as )'ou would in the s in 'pleasure·, soft not hard. Posso le,·antar/tirar (Bra::) dinhciro com esre cartao de credito?

ng As in 1l0wIlg (for nao) : it represents the nasal sound made when the vowels a, e, i, 0 or u precede m or n, and the nasal diphthongs ao, ae , ai , and oe. If you are familiar with the French pronunciation of words like 'manter· and 'environ', then the Portuguese nasal sound should be no problem to you. Don't give the g of ng its full (hard) value as in 'sing' - treal the letter combination as a symbol of the nasal sound.

As in ra h!;.ttuh (for raqueta ): the initial r of a word should be rolled and aspirated, to create a 'hrr' sound from the back of the throat.

u As in hgh-zult dull bghll-Yoo (for casa de banho): this is a dull u sound, as in the 0 in ·mother'.

6

Where the whole sentence (or most of the sentence) is different, the Brazilian equh-alent will be repeated on a separate line and have (Bra::) preceding it:

Desculpe. enganei-me no numero dushlwolp, CIIgallgY-H1111l 1100 nooll1croo

(Braz) Desculpe, foi engano d[L~J1JWO!p, Joy en-galt-noll

In Things You"1I See or Hear. the whole Brazilian phrase has been ghTn afterward:

casa de banholbanheiro (Bmz) naa fumadores/nao fumantes (Braz)

bathroom non-smokers

CAMPI NG AN D CARAVANNING

Portugal has campsites all along its coastline and especially ncar the most popu lar resorts. Sites can also be found inland. It is advisable to have an Interna tional Campers' Card, ava il able from mOLOring organisations and the Camping and Caravanning Club in Grea l Britain . Many sites require that such a card be shown, especiall y in the high season,

Youth hostels are open to members of the YHA , but in the high season it is best to book in advance.

In COlllraSl to Portugal, camping isn't widespread in Brazil , and there are very few organized campsites with facilities.

BUS, METRO AND BOAT TRAVEL

The major Portuguese cities have good bus networks. On m buses you pay the driver as you enter. Since there is generally a Oat fare, it is cheaper to buy a book of tickets ca lled a caderneta. Multi-journey passes for tourists (passes turisticos and monthly passes (passes sociais) are also avai lable. In Brazil , buses are the main fo rm of transportation wi th good connec tions and frequent services. Buy tickets from the conductor at the back of the bus. Inter-ci ty buses leave from the rodoviaria; long-distance, overnight buses. called leitos , art cheaper than travelling by plane.

There is an excellent coach network which serves the whole of Portugal, covering the gaps in the raHway system and givi a better connecting service between cities. The coaches are comfortable , fast and have fa cilities such as video and air conditioning (essential in a hot climate).

Lisbon's underground system is called the metro. Agai n, a fl fare is in operation and you can buy a caderneta (book of ten ti ckets) or a seven-day ticket (passe) giving un limited trave\.

Lisbon also has a tram network covering most of the city" T same caderne ta used on buses is also valid for use on trams.

Boats connect bo th sides of the Tagus rh'Cr in Lisbon, carrying cars and pedestrians . Ano ther feature of the City is I ele\'adores (l ifts) taking people up the steep hills,

In Portugal. there are state-run hospitals and private hospitals. Prh-ate hospitals and clinics are wry expensiw and not as well equipped as state-run hosp itals . If you go privately, always ask the price first. In case of emergency. ask to be taken to the scrvic;o de urgencias or pronto socorro (casualty) . There are reciproca l arrangements bet\wen Portugal and Britain for free medical treallnent.

Medicines and drugs are only a\'ailable from chemists (farmacias) , which are open from 9 am 10 1 pm and 3 pm to 7 pm. If the chemist you visit is closed, there will be a notice on the door giYing the address of the duty chemist (farmacia de servic;o) .
