A port can be defined as any area or harbor that can provide shelter to various boats and vessels and can allow the period or constant transportation of shipments. Ports are vitally important to the marine industry. They not only help the industry but also aid the communities in which they reside. Many are well-equipped with specialized

fixtures to deal with cargos (forklifts and cranes). Ports promote the welfare and trade of the country.

Ports can be divided into 7 major categories:

• Sea Ports

• Inland Ports

• Fishing Ports

• Warm Water Ports

• Dry Ports

• Cruise Home Ports

• Cargo Ports

Ports are classified considering a variety of factors such as location, depth, and ship sizes.

Sea Ports

• These are the most common types of ports and are used for commercial shipping activities all over the world. The ports are built in an area that can accommodate

both small and large vessels. They are set along the coastline so that they can easily handle cargo transactions.

• It is common to see warehouses nearby to store shipments. There may also be hotels, restaurants, reception facilities, restrooms and eateries for tourists visiting

the port.

Inland Ports

• These are built on smaller bodies of water such as rivers or lakes. Their purpose is for passengers, cargo or both. Some of these port have access to the sea and so they act like normal seaports without the congestion. Some of these ports are

specified for smaller passenger and fishing activities.

Fishing Ports

• Fishing ports can be inland ports or seaports. Their existence relies mainly on the availability of fish in the region. These ports can be based solely on the commercial fishing industry, the recreational fishing industry, or both.

Warm Water Ports

• These ports are based in areas where the water never freezes so they do not have to temporarily shut down in winter. The year-round ports greatly enhance the

economy of the region they are in.

• These are inland ports that are connected with the sea by road or rail facilities. The are areas that are important for the import and export business because they

contain all of the machinery and logistics required to handle the constant clearance of shipments.

Cruise Home Ports

• These ports specialize in all of the activities that are needed for passengers to embark and disembark from a cruise ship. They are capable for providing the

luxurious amenities that for their voyage.

• Cruise ships also stop at Ports of Call. These are ports that cruise ships visit briefly during their voyage.

Cargo Ports

• These ports specialize in the cargo they are carrying. Examples of cargo include liquid fuels, chemicals, food grains, timber, machines, motor cars, etc. They

engage in the transfer of goods to their specific storage facility.
