Monday, March 14, is theofficial start of the springsports season. But, before thenew season starts, I wouldlike to reflect on the successof our winter sports pro-grams. I personally believethat a school’s sports pro-grams and the students in-volved in those programsshould represent the goalsand values being taught in theschool’s curriculum. Withthat as the standard, I feelthat our student athletes ac-complished all that could beexpected of them during thewinter sports campaign.

• A group of our fourthgrade boys played on a Ju-nior Pro team this year. Theyfinished in third place in

their league tournament andreceived medals for goodsportsmanship.

• The fifth grade girls alsohad a Junior Pro team. Theywon the B division tourna-ment and went undefeatedwith a 12-0 record.

• The sixth grade boyswho played on a Junior Proteam won their B divisiontournament and finished witha 12-0 record.

• In the early part of thewinter season, our eighthgrade girls volleyball teamfinished with only one loss ina match this season.

• The freshmen girls bas-ketball team finished the sea-son with 10-2 record.

• The junior varsity girlsbasketball team finished theseason with a record of 20-0.

• The varsity boys basket-ball team finished with a re-cord of 11-11. This is the firsttime in several years that ourboys varsity team finished inthe top half of the league.

• The girls bowling teamadvanced to the quarterfi-nals before bowing out of thestate tournament. Two bowl-ers, Jocelyn Schrauben and

Shamrock teams successful during winter seasonVictoria Spitzley advancedto the individual’s portion ofthe tournament.

• The boys bowling teamfinished the season with thehighest team score of anyarea school in the Division 4regional.

• Together, we celebratedthe 500th career victory ofour varsity girls basketballcoach, Mr. Al Schrauben.

• As of this writing, ourvarsity girls basketball teamhas advanced to the quar-terfinals of the state tourna-ment.

We also have expandedour volleyball program to thefifth and sixth grades. Theyare playing in the CatholicYouth League, where theyare learning and improvingtheir volleyball skills.

Most importantly, our stu-dent athletes worked hardto maintain their grades allseason long and demon-strated good sportsmanshipthroughout the season.

All in all, I am very proudof the way our student ath-letes have represented ourschool both on and off the

court throughout the wintersports season. Their strongwork ethic, commitment tosuccess, positive attitudes, and teamwork have pro-pelled our teams to a suc-cessful winter sports seasonof which they can be veryproud. Our student athleteshave been exemplary exam-ples of what we expect at St.Patrick School.

Congratulations teamsfor a job well done.

Pewamo-Westphalia’s Abbey Hengesbach (4) drives to the basket during thePirates’ 51-47 loss to Flint Hamady in their Class C quarterfinal game at Lowellon March 15. Hengesbach led P-W with 16 points in the game.

LOWELL — For the second straightyear, Pewamo-Westphalia met Flint Hama-dy in the Class C girls basketball statetournament, and for the second straightyear the Hawks (26-0) ended the Pirates’season. P-W (25-2) fell 51-47 to the two-time defending state champions in theClass C quarterfinals at Lowell on March15.

Abbey Hengesbach led P-W with 16points in the contest, which the Piratesnever led, but were never out of. Hamadyscored the first six points of the game, and led by as many as ten in the first half, but P-W closed the gap to four, 22-18 atthe half.

“We just gave them too many easybuckets early on,” said P-W coach SteveEklund. “Fighting back from that (early)deficit took a lot of gas out of us.”

Rachel Schafer split a pair of freethrows with 6:37 left in the fourth to bringP-W to within a single point, 36-35, butthe Pirates could get no closer.

“It’s tough,” Hengesbach said. “Wecame in knowing that it was going to bea good game, we were so close the wholetime, we just came up short.”

Hamady hit five of their seven freethrows in the last 1:09 of play, but the Pi-rates will feel like they simply ran out oftime. P-W cut a 49-42 lead with 15 secondsleft to just three on two free throws anda 3-pointer by Hengesbach, the latter with1.6 on the clock, but a final Hawk freethrow with less than half a second left byPorsha Fluker, the last of her game-high17, finally put the game out of reach.

Brooke Lewis added 10 points for P-W,who lost their second game of the sea-son, both to top-ranked teams, and Kathy

MORRICE — Portland St. Patrick fin-ished their boys basketball season with arecord of 11-11 after a lopsided win anda stunning loss in their Class D districttournament at Morrice.

The Shamrocks breezed into the dis-trict final with an 80-24 win over Holt Lu-theran in the semifinal on March 9, butstumbled to a 68-50 loss to Lansing Chris-tian in the district title game on March11.

Jerrid Smith led the way with 15 pointsin the semifinal for St. Pats, who openedthe game on a 10-2 run and never trailedthe hapless Hawks.

The Shamrocks held that eight-pointlead at the beginning of the second quar-ter, when Tyler Kramer’s jumper from justinside the arc started a 12-3 St. Pats run,and the rout was on.

Sophomore Denzel Jordan scored 16of Holt Lutheran’s 24 points in the game, but Michael Jordan might not have beenenough to lead the Hawks to victory inthis game.

The Shamrocks led 35-15 at the half, and blew the contest open after the break, with Jordan scoring all of his team’spoints in a third quarter that St. Pats dom-

inated 22-8.Jordan picked up his fourth foul with

.9 seconds left in the third, which endedwith the Shamrocks holding a 54-23 ad-vantage, and fouled out 26 seconds intothe fourth, turning what was a lopsidedgame into a St. Pats layup drill.

By the end of that drill, twelve differentShamrocks got on the scoresheet. Kramerand Collin Lay had nine points each, KyleWilcox had seven and David Simon sixin a game that St. Pats head coach MarkScheurer said was not of much value tohis team.

“It’s hard to coach in a game like that,”Scheurer said. “I thought that the kids didwell. It’s hard to say how finely tuned wewere in a game that sloppy, but we put up80 points and everybody got a lot of play-ing time, so that’s a good thing.”

Whatever momentum the Shamrocksmay have gained from the lopsided winevaporated early in the district finalagainst Lansing Christian, who outscoredSt. Pats 22-8 in the first quarter on theway to the district title.

The Pilgrims won the game from be-yond the arc, getting 10 3-pointers fromsix different players in the game.

Smith again led the Shamrocks with 12points in the game.

Thomas and Arlesia Morse each chipped in 15 for theHawks. The Pirates’ only other defeat was back on Dec.30 to Inkster, who was number one in Class A at thetime.

“This was a very tough game,” Hamady coach KeithSmith said. “It wasn’t easy, they have a well-coachedballclub, but we have some veterans who are used to be-ing in these types of situations.”

The Pirates are no strangers to those situations, ortheir opponents. This was the fifth time in seven seasonsthat P-W has met Hamady deep in the tournament, with

the Pirates winning just one of them, a 63-60 regional fi-nal victory in 2005. Despite that history, Eklund insistedthat the opponent in this regional final was irrelevant.

“I could care less,” he said. “I told my girls in thelocker room that we have the best girls from the villagesof Pewamo and Westphalia, and they have the best girlsfrom the entire city of Flint. There is nothing to hangour heads about.”

Regional champsPreviously, P-W held previously unbeaten Clare to

three points in the fourth quarter as the third-ranked Pi-rates won the Class C regional title with a 38-26 win at

Holton on March 10.Kristy Droste had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Henges-

bach added 13 and four steals, and Schafer scored ninepoints as the three seniors accounted for all of P-W’spoints.

“They played a really packed-in zone all night, whichdefinitely slowed the tempo” Eklund said.

P-W led by five entering the fourth quarter and thenpulled away in the final minutes from the Pioneers(24-1), who were ranked No. 6 in Class C.

“We rebounded very well in the fourth quarter, andwe got some good looks offensively,” Eklund said. “Un-til then it was nip and tuck.”

BENZONIA — Portland St. Patrick wontheir first girls basketball regional title inthree years, but fell in the Class D quarter-finals, finishing their season with a recordof 18-8.

Senior Nicole Schneider scored 23points to lead the Shamrocks to a 56-45win over Fowler in the Class D regional fi-nal at Beal City High School on March 10.

It was the third win this season forthe Shamrocks against CMAC rival Fowl-er (11-14).

“We knew Fowler was going to playextremely tough, and they did. We shotthe ball a little better than we have been, and they kept getting after us,” St. Patrickcoach Al Schrauben said. “I never reallyfelt comfortable until there were about 50seconds left.”

St. Patrick, holding a three-point half-time lead, opened the third quarter with a14-3 run. Senior Adrienne Thelen helpedjumpstart the spurt with a pair of basketsin the first two minutes.

“It was amazing to play a league foeand then go on to win,” Thelen said. “Wehaven’t been this far in a while, so it wasso important for us.”

Fowler opened the fourth quarter withan 8-4 run to cut the Shamrocks’ lead tosix with 5:30 left in the game. Schneiderhit four of six free throws in the final fewminutes to seal the win.

“Their experience, the fact that theyhave been here, may have gotten to us alittle,” Fowler coach Nate Goerge said.

Lindsey Hufnagel led the Eagles with24 points. Fowler was in its first regionalfinal since 1999.

St. Pats then put Central Lake into anunusual position in the Class D quarterfi-nal at Benzie Central on March 15.

The top-ranked Trojans trailed theShamrocks 24-22 at the half.

“First time we’ve been down at half thisseason,” senior Heidi Hicks said.

The undefeated Trojans responded, holding the Shamrocks to four field goalsin the second half in pulling away to a54-39 win.

It took Central Lake a half to get un-tracked Tuesday.

St. Patrick’s Adrienne Thelen openedthe third quarter with a 3-pointer to pushthe Shamrock lead to five, but the Trojanswent on a 10-2 run and never looked back.A steal and layup by Tasha Crouse withjust under five minutes to play in the quar-ter gave Central Lake a lead it would notrelinquish.

Jasmine Hines, who was named MissBasketball on Tuesday, led the Trojanswith 22 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks.Hicks added 15 points and six assists.

Nicole Schneider led St. Patrick with11 points.

“You have to give them credit,” St. Pat-rick’s coach Al Schrauben said. “I thoughtthey were tired at half. But they cameout and had a lot of energy in the secondhalf.

“We hit that 3 go up five, but then wemade some mistakes defensively. We let(Hines) go baseline when we needed toget her into the middle and she madethree buckets in a row on us. That kind ofgot them going.”

The passion for readingand the love of booksstarts in the home and isnurtured in school. Whatcan you do as a parentto develop this passion?Read to and with yourchild. Read often and reada lot and then read somemore. These are activitiesthat can not be overdonein American families. When it comes to being aparent or adult who is con-cerned about young chil-dren and their learning toread, here is the rule: Readas often as you and thechild have time for.

Reading aloud to achild or sitting side-by-side reading a story

together, discussing thestory as you go and af-terwards are all behaviorsthat can make a big dif-ference in a child’s readingdevelopment. It is nevertoo early to start readingto children.

When you are readingto a child or with a childside-by-side, it is alwaysa good idea to talk a lotabout the book. Beforeyou begin a book there

are tremendous possibili-ties for predicting what isinside. As you read, thereis always much to thinkabout in relationship towhat is going to happennext.

When the story is com-pleted, it is often wiseto discuss the problem ofthe story and how it wassolved by characters with-in the story and how theyimpacted the story. Or,just talk about issues thatthe story dealt with. Talk-ing with a child about thestory is as valuable asreading to them. It stretch-es their thinking and al-lows them to create agreater sense of owner-

ship for the story that theyhave experienced.

It is wise to start withpicture books and buildinto story books and evennovels as the child ages.Young children love to callnovels “chapter books”and the chapters provide aunit of measurement thatthe parents might use togauge and pace their read-ing. A chapter a day or achapter at each setting isa way to develop a rhythmfor reading a novel. Manychildren’s novels can beread to children as youngas four or five. The realtest is whether the childfinds the story interestingenough to keep his or her

attention over time.As you read aloud, be

sure to read with expres-sion and with a sense ofmeaning and purpose forthe language that is com-ing off the page. If it isa picture book you arereading, focus both on thewords and the pictures tobring the story to life.

Reading and the think-ing which reading spawns

become the keys whichcan help an individualchild open their futureand help to make that fu-ture as fulfilling as possi-ble.

Read on adults! Readto and with the children inyour life!
