VOL. 54, NO. 5, December 2010

ON THE COVER This month’s cover was designed by Brokaw —a lean, nimble strategic-creative- digital agency famous for helping a handful of premier global, national, and regional brands rise above the blah blah. Because you don’t need a bad case of the flu and icy roads to remind you it’s winter in Cleveland. All you need is a little Brokaw. (And maybe a sweet cyber snowflake made with technology and love.)

FROM THE TOPOur president, Lisa Zone

The holidays are fast upon us, which means one thing: it’s almost ADDY time! As you’re putting pretty ribbons and bows on your holiday gifts, don’t forget to wrap up your best work from the past year too. The deadline for entries is Wednes-day, January 5, 2011 and you can find details on the AAF-Cleve-land website. And as long as you’re in the giving mood, don’t forget to give your favorite college student the gift of career preparation by sending him or her to our annual Communications Career Day event, which will be held on Monday, December 20 at The Plain Dealer. Help a student become more savvy in social media, more entrepreneurial, better coached for the employment search and get a better understanding of the dynamics of client vs. agency as-pects of the business. Interested in helping out? Contact the AAF office for more information. As we look ahead to 2011, we have some exciting things planned, including opportunities to bring more national recognition to our members here in the CLE. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months. In the meantime, feel free to contact me (as always) with any questions or suggestions you have about the club.

Warmest regards,

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORAs we reach the end of another year I thought it was a good idea to give our members a “State of the Club” report on how we’re doing. I can happily report that things are beginning to look up. After a challenging 2009-10 fiscal year where revenue and membership were down, the current fiscal year is show-ing definite signs of improvement both in revenue and membership. As of this writing our membership is at just under 350 and holding steady. We’ve added new corporate members and attendance at our monthly luncheons has improved over last year.

We continue to strive to bring in top-notch speakers on relevant topics to help grow your business and enhance your career. This year alone you’ve had the opportunity to hear from John and Tug from the American Copywriter blog, Ian Schafer from Deep Focus who is respon-sible for the MadMen Yourself craze and Eric Ryan, Brand Architect from Method Products to name just a few. In addition we’ve begun a Presidents’ Council and have a Freelance Fair and Public Service initiative in the planning stages for 2011.

nOCA nEwsAnd the good news is…

The December 1 NOCA One Industry Fo-rum was all about crystal ball gazing. We surveyed the world of NOCA and found some optimism among the gray clouds of December.

Fully 60 percent of our respondents felt that business, in general, will be better in 2011; and specifically nearly 70 percent thought our industry would do better in the coming year with comparable numbers for their individual businesses. The bad news was that roughly 1 in 7 anticipated increas-ing staff during the next 12 months.

More than 60 percent saw more business coming from within Northeast Ohio and 85 percent saw that business coming from social media – with web develop-ment and mobile marketing also showing sizeable gains.

Good or bad, 2011 promises to be inter-esting… and if not profitable, let’s hope it’s at least entertaining. Happy New Year!
