AboutBCI Economics is in the business of giving you answers to your questions. As Austral-Asia’s leading construction market research organisation, our focus is on real-time, hard project data. Projects are where construction market demand happens. Others may be data modellers – we at BCI are construction data miners.

BCI Economics is the centre of market intelligence within the BCI Media Group, the leading construction media group in the southern hemisphere. Trading as BCI Australia, BCI New Zealand and BCI Asia, BCI reports on well over 100,000 construction projects p.a. in twelve regional markets including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Hong Kong. With highly qualified team members on the ground in 25 offices across the region, BCI has unparalleled access to live construction data going as far as 10 years back and two years ahead.

BCI’s research capacity is the foundation of our unmatched ability to ascertain upcoming construction activity, by region and category, and to tell who’s working on what, what technology is being employed and what products being used. With a research team of well over 250 staff who talk to thousands of decision makers every day, we literally have our fingers on the pulse of the building industry. We have shown that we can tell whether a simple cold in construction demand is likely to blow out into a full case of construction pneumonia, or whether an upward trend will lead to a new boom.

Have you ever wanted to know how design specifiers really view your brand and what drives their product selection process?

Have you ever checked to confirm what share of the market your brand is really occupying – and if it’s growing or shrinking?

Have you ever wondered what the actual market potential of your products will be over the next six or 12 months – or longer?

For safe navigation in an opaque construction market, we give you night vision goggles.

For a realistic perspective of next year’s construction market, we give you binoculars.

For a thorough understanding of finicky brand decisions and project contacts in the construction market, we give you a microscope.

ServicesBCI Economics offers three types of services to clients active in the construction sector; Ongoing, Specialised and On Demand.

1. OngoingAs part of its service to project leads subscribers, BCI offers periodic construction forecasts. These are an integral element of BCI’s member services and an important aid in helping decision makers anticipate critical changes in market demand:

• BCI FORECASTER is a monthly report of short and long-term construction starts (as measured in their dollar value). The short-term forecast is illustrated by contrasting the immediate three month outlook against the previous three months. The longer-term trend is shown by contrasting the value of 12 months’ construction starts ending three months out against the corresponding 12-month period a year earlier. The Forecaster serves as an effective, extremely competitive short term sales and operations planning tool.

• BCI CONSTRUCTION OUTLOOK is BCI’s annual outlook for the forthcoming fiscal year. The comprehensive report is presented to the public at BCI’s Annual Breakfast Briefings. It provides a succinct fact-based picture of construction market demand for the next four quarters, contrasted against the last 12 quarters.

• BCI SENTIMENT SURVEYS are conducted annually and focus on the business confidence of stakeholders in the construction sector (developers, architects, consultants, builders and subcontractors), shedding valuable light on the overall market trajectory.

2. SpecialisedCurrent market developments guide BCI in its choice of topics for its widely recognised market reports. Past reports have included bi-annual Green Building reports (2006, 2008 and 2010); Construction in the Health Sector (2009); Building the Education Revolution Report (2009), and Building for Renewable Energy Report (2012).

3. On Demand On demand research includes all commissioned research conducted by BCI Economics at the request and pursuant to the specifications of our clients.

Templated ResearchThis type of research implies that BCI Economics bundles research projects across several clients, making commissioned research particularly affordable for clients. This approach often involves so-called omnibus surveys. As a source of reliable, quick and cost-effective information on topics which are generally too brief to be addressed in a separate survey, omnibus surveys by BCI involve a range of methodologies including complex searches in BCI’s comprehensive project leads database, on-top research to provide extra information on existing project reports (e.g. white good brands chosen for serviced apartments completed in the last 12 months) and target group surveys. The topics typically address one of the following:

• MARKET SHARE ANALYSES (By region, project type, product category, etc.)

• DECISION MAKER ANALYSES (Including brand preferences, factors driving specification choices, information sources, etc.)

Custom ResearchCustom research at BCI Economics knows few limits, provided the construction market is involved. Over the past two years BCI Economics has successfully completed comprehensive market studies on a variety of building product sectors including, but not limited to, roofing, insulation, lighting, home appliances, elevator/escalator, air-conditioning system, sanitary ware, copper building wire and light steel. The assignments went all the way from simple market share analyses to a comprehensive market due diligence analysis for a proposed acquisition of an Australian supplier by a European group. Typical assignments handled by BCI Economics include:

• BRAND AWARENESS AND MARKET SHARE ANALYSES (Across single or multiple regional markets, project types and product categories, conducted as a static or times series analysis)

• MARKET ENTRY ANALYSES (For any construction market within Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand)

• MARKET DEVELOPMENT ANALYSES (Forecast of construction volumes (in dollars) or projects completed (in numbers) involving specific products or services, by project type, region, etc.)

Contact Management and Marketing ServicesBCI Economics is happy to expand its scope of services into the realm of direct marketing when such requests require our extensive database of construction contacts. As examples, we have successfully:

• assisted the developer of an innovative flat pack housing concept in Australia with the solicitation of expressions of interest by first and second tier builders involved in residential construction

• supported various organisers of conferences and exhibitions with the promotion of their events

• supported the launch of products by manufacturers seeking to reach key design specifiers in a specific market
