GREENPOWER FORMULA 24

Page 3: Portfolio Max Quality

TASK OVERVIEWConceptualise, Design and Manufacture a single seat, fully electric vehicle capable of conforming to Formula 24 specifications. Involved efficient management and organisation of 12 person team, with effective task delegation crucial due to the size and timeframe of the project..

There was an emphasis placed on the sustainability of the design, with extensive amounts of wood used forward of the rear subframe. Each truss, bolt and fishplate were individually assessed for stress and shear failure using free body diagrams and formulae.

Gained valuable experience of working in team of both Engineers and Designers. Implemented strict quality control proceedures to ensure high quality manufacture of fishplates and chassis truss members. Produced 16 page report detailing and reflecting on project, and how I felt certain areas such as communication could be improved.

The project offered me an opportunity to develop a number of skills, most notably designing and manufacturing a spaceframe chassis working with mild steel and a degree of wiring.

High quality engineering drawings were created using Solidworks for clear guidance when manufacturing components such as fishplates.

SKILLS USEDCAD:

PRACTICAL- Metalwork (Milling, Filing, Drilling, Cutting) mild steel members- Constructing steering mechanism, manufactured steel wishbones and trunnionsPROTOTYPING- 1/5 pine scale model helped identi-fy number of steel fishplates required.- Foam mockup of driver used to as-sist with vehicle packaging and place-ment of cross members.

SHELL ECO-MARATHONPROTOTYPE CATEGORY

Page 5: Portfolio Max Quality

TASK OVERVIEWConceptualise, Design and Manufacture a single seat, fully electric vehicle to compete in the 2016 edition of Shell’s Eco Marathon Competition. The Prototype Category is focused on acheiving the best possible fuel efficiency.

OWN RESPONSIBILITIESLeader of Visuals/Body subgroup, responsible for Aesthetics of vehicle and manufacture of carbon fibre body structure. Own initial concepts will be developed into final vehicle. Also involved in vehicle packaging and foam model prototyping. Created pin-joint mockup of driver to assist with efficient use of space in vehicle body. Liaise with MS students to integrate power system into vehicle INITIAL CONCEPT SKETCHES

ORGANISATIONProject offers me further experience working with project management tools, such as Microsoft Sharepoint and Solidworks Pack and go systems. Involved in production of Gantt charts and promotion of vehicle. MANUFACTURE/DESIGNComponents and production are being designed with manufacturing process in mind. Further developing strong CAD skills designing components and surface modelling car body alongside engineers in team. Involved in complex calculations to determine optimum side profile form.

OWN SUB-PROJECTSInvolved in negotiating budget allocation with other subgroups. Also run separate projects, such as headlight cluster design.

AUXILIUM

TASK OVERVIEWPeer elected to successfully lead a group of 6 through the development of a radical new medical product for Boots. Auxilium translates from Latin into ‘Help’ and ‘Assist’. And performs dual functions to assist Par-kinsons sufferers. These focus on address-ing the symptoms associated with Parkin-sons, most notably hand/arm tremors and a lack of grip.

The tremors are significantly countered and damped through use of a number of adjustable weights. Whilst the grip issue is addressed through a system designed to utilise adjustable magnetic tags, which can be fixed to commonly used objects such as doorhandles, kettles and pans.

Light sensors placed on the fingertips of the glove are constantly monitored by an Arduino microcontroller, when the light level decreases (i.e. when an object is picked up) an Electromagnet inside the glove is powered, and attracts the mag-netic tag, assisting with their grip. When the fingers are moved away from the ob-ject the electromagnet will disengage.

Approx 50%Further potential development

1. Further refinement and research of optimum weights for each individual user.

2. Improved batteries: Replacement of conventional AA packs with compact Lithium Ion for greater capacity.

3. Embedding of magnets into new products: KAALMS hopes to create an industry standard, where prod-ucts can be designed for compatibility with Auxilium. Consumers will be informed of compatibility prior to purchase.

4. Use of flexible wires to improveusability of product.

AGA-RANGEMASTERDISHWASHER CONCEPT

Page 10: Portfolio Max Quality

TASK OVERVIEWConducted extensive research into possible markets for AGA Rangemaster to move into and reduce their dependance on home UK market.

Created design solution suited to identified market, capable of manufacture at existing Coalbrookdale facilities and distribution through the group’s existing network.

The product itself is a highly compact dishwasher for wealthy, yet densely populated areas where AGA has yet to make a signifcant impact, such as Hong-Kong and Singapore. Designed with classic AGA styling cues and design language in mind, the idea behind the concept is that whilst one module can be used for washing, the other can still be used for plate storage - eliminating the need for an additional cupboard.

Accompanying the concept was a report detailing areas such as market research, infographics and risk/benefit analysis.

Dishwasher is able to elimate need for racking inside, through use of magnets embedded in purpose designed plates/mug.s. The magnet allows for them to be simply stuck on the insides of the dishwasher, improving the space efficiency.

Designed to fit with current AGA styling themes and design language.

WITHOUT THOUGHT DESIGN THEORYLIGHT SWITCH CONCEPT

Page 12: Portfolio Max Quality

Low friction anodised Aluminium.- Allows user to glide finger in circular motion and adjust lighting levels.- Inspired by iPod Nano click wheel, already intuitive to many users.- Premium feel and look, pleasingly smooth surface finish.

Thin minimalistic profile.- 6mm at thickest point- Flush fit with wall allows user to slide finger along wall and straight onto switch, little accuracy required

Decorative assistive ridge.- Adds both structural rigidity and premium detailing not currently found on contemporary light switches

Intelligent usage monitor.- Central glass button also acts as monitor for electricity usage. LED array behind glass changes from green to red depending on usage- Acts as subtle, non intrusive method of user monitoring their electricity usage- Dual functionality as monitor is useful for finding switch in a poorly lit or unfamiliar room.
