Fall 2014. Team together with City and Regional Planning student Gavin Taves. All graphics are made by me, with the exception of the context info graphics to the right.
The site, Clinton CSO, is currently an under used parking lot in the area between two neighbourhoods of very different character. At the site is Onondaga creek, at present channalized and of bad condition.
Through the concept “Seamless” our design will address all three aspects of sustainability. Social functions, such as a visitor centre, a library and new meeting points will work to integrate people of different backgrounds. 50,000 square feet of retail and office space will ensure the financial sustainability of the project. The design will also restore Onondaga creek and work to improve the quality of the water in the creek and the condition for animals and insects. The design will retain 70% of the stormwater falling on site and reduce the urban heat island effect.

Trelleborg
Trelleborg is located in a region of attractive tourist destinations and also has a lot of tourists pass through, therefore our goal was to create a new neighbourhood that can make Trelleborg a tourist destination and at the same time reconnect Trelleborg with the sea and the other villages along the coast.
Trelleborg is located in a region with many important tourist destinations, and we examined the themes of these destinations in order to see what Trelleborg can offer that could complement what is already there. Trelleborg is also an important travel hub where many people are passing through, which means there is a potential to make these people stay longer in here. We looked at potential visitors in order to see what they want in a tourist destination.

Spring 2014. Team project together with Ulrika Larsson, Caroline Lindqvist, My Söderberg and Emma Karlsson.
Trelleborg is the most southern city in Sweden. It’s located at the sea and used to have one of the biggest harbours in Sweden. Trelleborg is still an important site for ferries and freight traffic, but in order to build a modern harbour and to make the city more attractive, the harbour is moving to the eastern part of the city and our site is the old, western part of the harbour.

Axon of the new development from the east shows building types.
Masterplan showing the five different areas of the new development. Photos show some of the existing tourist destinations in Trelleborg.
In order to satisfy needs from different groups of visitors, we created five areas with five different characters (more on these on next page).
The beach, a small marina, a park with preserved industrial buildings, a shopping area which connects with the city centre and the active harbour.
To give visitors a connection to the harbour without interfering with the activities of the harbour we designed a bridge to span the harbour, creating beautiful outlooks and connecting Trelleborg with the eastern beach.

The beach. An area for swimming and playing and enjoying the sea.
Marina. An area for cafes and people watching.
The industrial park. Old industrial buildings and lots of action.
The city centre. An active area and a connection between the city centre and the sea.

The pedestrian bridge spans over the active harbour, and provides the visitors a unique overlook of the boats and the work in the harbour. The bridge connects the beautiful but inaccesible eastern beach to the city centre.

Fall 2015. Advanced Planting Design.
The project Chinese Canyon was concieved as part of the new Botanical Garden in Malmö, Sweden. As with all botanical gardens the scientific aspect is important, but in Malmö Botanical Garden the main focus is that it has a strong visual appeal and a “wow-effect”. In order to achieve this, the focus has been on finding plant material which is spectacular, beautiful and has a visual interest.
The goal of the Botanical Garden is to showcase habitats from around the world and The Chinese Canyon is located in a humid canyon with a stream running through the site. The inspiration and plant material comes from one region - the mountain region of south-western China, with a focus on Yunnan and Sichuan provinces.
Picture from Malmö Stad
The Chinese Canyon is located along a river which runs through the botanical garden towards the lake. The river creates conditions for water plants and a woodland with lush and dense vegetation. The canyon has 4m high walls on both sides of the river. These walls becomes green walls of plants with a preference for moist, but well drained, conditions.
In the southwest of China many plants are acid-loving, such as Rhododendron. The natural soil of Malmö, which is heavy and alkaline and the top soil will therefore be replaced. Following the guidelines of AMA, the soil be a Type 2, where 60cm of the top soil is replaced. The added soil is a Type B soil, with no particles smaller than 0.06 mm and 10% of organic matter. The pH level will be between 5.5 and 6.

Mysterious and EnchantingThe plants in the Chinese Canyon has been chosen to create a mysterious, exotic feeling and to give the visitors an experience of being transported to another world - or at least another part of our world.
Chinese GardenChina has a rich garden tradition, which goes many hundred years back in time. The Chinese Garden is, just like the Chinese Canyon, inspired by the Chinese nature. There are some elements which always exists in a Chinese garden; mountains, water and architecture.
Inspired by NatureThe Chinese Canyon is inspired by the mountainous region in south-western China. This area is characterized by extreme topographical differences, and a very rich plant material, much of which is possible to grow in the mild climate in the south of Sweden.
The plants in the Chinese Canyon are selected for “wow-effect” and all-year interest. Many of the woody plants are evergreen, and with the difference in flowering periods there will always be something flowering in the Chinese Canyon. The planting scheme is dark green with pink and bronze flowers to contrast each other.
To the left: Cross-section of the Canyon. On the down right; an illustrative of how the cliff walls will look when planted with plants, hanging down over stones.
