Begun as a group project to help

determine a concept for the growing

city, it was found that the existing

infrastructure was no longer sufficient to

transport both pedestrians and vehicles.

The group decided it was best to move

the pedestrian traffic through the site for

safety. This move offered the opportunity

to provide a new civic center for the

community to grow around.

CLASSROOMS

The project called for a combined

school and community center. Initially

conceived, the piazza became a public

center for the city enclosed by the area

of the school. Splitting the required

program among athletics, classrooms,

and administration, the school is able to

promote education while also generating

flexibility among programs that could be

useful to the community.

Circulating through the site, the

terrain becomes useful in generating

security among the programs. Academic

related programs are moved to the upper

end of the site while the community

piazza and other public programs are

moved to the lower edge.

SITE PLAN

Onondaga Lake on the edge of

Syracuse, New York has been classified

as one of the most polluted lakes in

the world. The Lake Laboratory is thus

tasked to not only research how to

correct this problem, but also to educate

the public on how the pollution affects

the ecosystem outside of the lake water

itself.

The complexity of the site reveals

it as a park that also has the attention of

an interstate system nearby. Anchored

at the north edge of Onondaga Lake,

the laboratory designed as a filtration

system. Filtering water, sunlight and

occupants, the building separates tasks

from interfering with one another.

Conceptually the building is

designed to show moments of effect.

The public is revealed to the issues of

pollution through the documentation

of the museum portion. The research

portion employs a lab oriented design.

The sustainability of the project

lies in its ability to filter harmful elements

and distill them into their most useful

attributes. Therefore water is cleaned

and used for toilets and wetlands.

Sunlight is shaded to allow light without

generating unnecessary heat buildup.

The entire project becomes a model of

awareness.

Modern technology has allowed

great advances in information; however

the constant evolution of technology

fosters the limitation of older equipment.

In order to recapture the benefits of

technological advances it is necessary to

recycle older equipment for components

that can be repurposed into newer units.

Placed near the Inner Harbor

of Syracuse, the recycling center not

only becomes a model of sustainability,

but also of awareness. Revealing the

recycling process shows the benefit of

its use. The more people know about

how to dispose of their older hardware

the more likely they are to dispose of it

correctly.

The recycling center is pieced

together as a museum, recovery center,

and research center. In order to make

the public aware of other possibilities

with technology the assembly line of the

recycling center is revealed. This allows

people the opportunity to see how things

are built. and what components are

necessary for technology to operate.

The sustainable operation of the

facility is coupled with the overall design.

In order to capitalize on the climate of

Syracuse, the facility uses public spaces

as buffer zones to the actual production

spaces. Thus sunlight and heat can be

captured and transferred where they are

needed.

decode history. However the meticulous

need for preservation requires spaces to

provide a pleasant environment without

harming the materials inside. Therefore

the concept of antinomy, the existence

of an object is based on the existence of

another is used. In this case, form and

show are utilized. The form casts the

necessary shadow on the maps which

thus creates the form of the building.

Focusing on the darkness of a

theatre the map stacks are organized

around a central shadow. More active

programs are oriented towards the

river to benefit from the daylight and to

displace the effects of shadows.

LYMAN LIBRARYLYMAN LIBRARYSYRACUSE, NEW YORK The limited space for stacks on

the campus of Syracuse has forced

the individual schools to find space for

specific subjects. Housing information for

the life sciences school, Lyman Hall has

a perfect need to fill in its form.

Lyman Hall, one of the oldest

buildings on campus, is a typical hallway

planned building. One central hallway

provides circulation to all the rooms on

either side of it. With new desires to

embrace the circulation of a library the

new addition pulls circulation elements

to the exterior of the library. This

allows more space for the stacks while

simultaneously reversing the role of

circulation in buildings.

PAINTING ROTATION PROJECT ROTATION

Designed as a combination

of parts, Villa Phidias is based upon

the diagrammatic understanding of a

painting. Given “Figure on a Porch” by

Richard Diebenkorn, the project first

begins to layout the regulating lines of

the painting. Around the horizon the

painting began rotating upon itself.

Concurrently a large regulating line

was found to be the focal point of the

painting. This helped in design of the

landscape as the lines began to show

highs and lows within the painting.

Combining the rotation and focal

line of the painting, the project was

given a strategy in how to go about

actually designing the home.

In order to connect the buildings

together, the house is built with a series

of courtyards that push and pull around

the axis of rotation. As the building

rises from the landscape its courtyard

pushes into it. However to maintain the

importance of this axis residents are

not revealed its presence until the final

approach. Therefore as people move

through the landscape they are shielded

from the final view of the project until the

last moment when they are on axis and

looking down to the water. At that final

moment the project becomes more than

a house; it becomes an experience.

The Dominican Republic has a

rich history of community among its

residents. In order to modernize the

community for a more vacation oriented

group, the community of Punta Cana

is developed upon the flexibility of

relations. Built near an underutilized golf

course the community is split among

differing size requirements. Each unit

is capable of holding a family, but its

true potential is revealed through the

connection with other units.

Therefore as vacation families

vary in number so to can the community

of which they are a part. No matter the

size, each community has the ability to

grow and shrink with its occupants.

Elevations of the community

units are based upon the density of the

occupants. Therefore edge communities

not only have fewer residents, but they

also have lower sites. This allows the

larger and denser units to get a view

past the edge communities. Useful for

any developer, the need to showcase

amenities is a major benefit to attracting

more visitors.

Designed for a client that

builds aerodynamic prototypes,

the building based on the circular

rotations of a helicopter’s rotors.

The large north-faced skylights offer

natural daylighting while shielding

direct light from the south. The

design has undergone a vast number

of alterations in order to both meet

the needs of the client and keep the

project with in budget.

Years ago, I worked on schematic

designs to show the client possibilities

for the design. After a series of designs,

the labs were fitted with conference

rooms and skylights. This offered

the building a break from the sterile

environment of a medical facility, After a

few last minute changes, the design was

on its way to a 2011 completion.

night club, the clients wanted to

visualize what their existing carriage

house could become. Maintaining

the major spaces and constructing

new interior partitions, the design is a

reflection of contemporary influence.
