Slow down, don’t run. This is a sacred space, a quiet space,a contemplative space. Leave everything behind onceyou pass through the barriers that separate “your” world from the world of God. Everyone is invited to the mosque. But over the years the model has become more exclusive than inclusive. The location and siting of this mosque is of utmost impotanceif it is to serve the democratic purpose it was originallydesigned for.

The upper Gallery is dedicated to womenfor prayer. The wood screen indicatesa division between the circulation spaceand the actual prayer area which looksdown on to the main prayer space.

The main prayer space is as transparent as possible. It is surrounded by trees to reduce the harsh affect of the sun andsimultaneously creates an atmosphere ofpeace and calm. It is important that thepopulation feels as close to nature aspossible.

The design of libraries as knowledge centers is critical nowmore then ever. As tangible data is replaced buy digital information, the library of today must respond as such.This library however takes a different route. The purpose of the “OASIS” is to create a warm, inviting, lightfilled space to attract people in Chinatown, Chicago. Itis a reminder of how architecture can enhance the readingexperience whether you are by yourself or with someone.

Externally, the green screen around the library is way to bring nature back in to this barren, asphalt paved site. It is also a way to control the harsh summer sun.Internally, it provides privacy fromprying eyes, and softens helps in noise reduction.
