■ I believe that... landscape design has to fulfill the requirements of the space, the function, the culture and the nature. In another word, it has to talk to them, to communicate with them, or even fall in love with them.

■ In my eyes, there are two directions, four factors when talking about landscape architecture. The first is about the space-function, and the other one is about the culture-nature. When we talk about the space and the function, we focus on the experience and feeling of the users when they are visiting the site. It might be temporary, and it is the basic of the design. Additionally, when it comes to the culture and the nature, people pay attention to the satisfaction of the users' mental needs and the desire of the harmony between human and the environment. Thus, it can be long-lasting, and it is discussed in a deeper way.

■ It is undeniable that ... when the design of the space and the function is amazing, the accomplishment of the culture and the nature can make it a success. In my opinion, during the exploring period of the design, a new approach that can combine the four factors is going to appear.

01TALK TO THE SPACE

The site is surrounded by buildings on three sides, with the other side facing the playground. Space of this site is defined according to surrounding buildings, and three viewing platforms with different functions are chosen according to users with different purposes and visions. At the same time, users on the playground are led to this site through the act of opening the boundary of this ground on the side facing the playground, with the aim to invigorate this site which is also enriched by various elements of landscape including flowing winding waters and arrays of trees intersected with each other, contributing to variable designed space where all the elements are related to each other while users can enjoy relaxation, recreation, and sightseeing. This site will be a new place for leisure as well as a spatially interesting corner on the campus.

Aerial View IThe design is a classical three-part division to the space. Each part has a sight point to the surround environment.

Entrance IIThe east entrance of the site is open to the students i n t h e u n i v e r s i t y. T h i s platform is served as a place for study and rest for these students.

Aerial View IID i f f e r e n t l a n d s c a p e elements are interlaced with each other and create a rhythm of the space. This enables the users to have an outstanding experience in the site.

Entrance IT h e w e s t e n t r a n c e o f the site is open to the students doing sports in the playground. Moreover, t h i s a l s o p r o v i d e s a p o s s i b i l i t y f o r p e o p l e sitting on the platform to watch the activities in the playground.

Problem 1 Problem 2 Problem 3 Problem 4

■ Problem 1: Because of the level difference in the site, there are many steps in the current square, which brings some inconvenience to the users, especially those old people and children. In my design, this problem can be solved by setting several plots to decrease the bad influence the level difference brings.■ Problem 2: Current square lacks some places for certain people, like children. Thus, children have no facilities to play with. In my design, site is divided into different areas for different kind of people.■ Problem 3: Current square lacks a clear division of the space, which means people who wants to have a rest have to share the space with people who are chatting loudly. In my design, a reasonable division of the space will be realized.■ Problem 4: Current square is suffering the disordered traffic and people lack some shortcuts to the place they want to go. In my design, traffic organization is an important part to be solved.

Private place--->Office worker■ This site is embraced by high-rise buildings on the north and the south, and has an elevation of 5 meters from the west to the east. In the design, this site is divided into plots on different heights in the pattern of leaf veins, starting from the most representative plane tree in Nanjing City. ■ This design is filled with elements of ancient ramparts of Nanjing City and is aimed to formulate a main square facing Beiji Ge to the east with enhanced sense of sculpture in land form.■ This site is designed to be composed of main square and areas for sightseeing, rest, and children in order to meet the need of every group of people because this site is an important hub of transportation characterized by a large flow of various people, along with fast lanes designed around the ground to alleviate traffic pressure. ■ An interior passageway is designed under the surface of the elevation part of the ground and can be employed as a way of propagating Nanjing’s local culture to passers who can feel like walking through ancient city tunnels.

UnderpassThe underpass provides an alternative way to the users and special settings could eqquip it with educational meanings.

Water ZoneThis area has an interlaced water system. This water system divides the space into some private areas with special sceneries, which can meet the demand of rest.

ShortcutThe shortcut around the buildings has two functions. 1. It has to fulfill the requirement of traffic.2. It can also emphasize the steps.

Entrance IThe main entrance is a waterscape with a special sculpture that can show the city spirit. The square is not only the traffic node in the city, but also the "name card" of Nanjing.

Entrance IIThe main entrance is open to the citizens and is near the bus station. Thus, this entrance should be large enough to deal with the large population and enclosed so that the square will not be disturbed by the outside traffic.

Function AnalysisThe main function, sightseeing and social activities, is placed in the main part of the site and the additional function, rest and rush through, is placed along the edge of the site.

Sight AnalysisThe wall designed in the site blocks the line of the sight. However, this also emphasize the sight influence in some certain area. Additionally, the platforms also enable the users to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the place outside the site.

Traffic AnalysisBased on the division of the site, the traffic line is designed in a form of lines. This formation could ensure that the users could walk to their destinations quickly.

Water has its special connotation in Chinese culture, which is demonstrated by many Chinese old sayings. For example, “ 上善若水 ” (the best benevolence

is like water); “ 逝者如斯夫 ” (time flies like water); “ 大道不行,乘桴浮于海 ” (if my proposal is not applicable, I will go to the sea by raft). Culturally

echoed by distinctive waters in Xuyuan Garden, this design is aimed to meet the need of Chinese men of letters for enjoying sight of the world in one place

by creating a touchable picture of water through the process of collecting landscape of rivers, lakes, and seas in one garden filled with hills, stones, buildings,

and plants.

■ ROCKRock can be seem as the symbol of mountains in Chinese Garden and is always used to imitate the mountains in the nature.

■ ROCK-ROCKRock build up the mountains and define the structure of the landscape pattern in the garden.

■ ROCK-WATERWater flows along the rocks and is emerged in the mountain.

■ WATER-WATERWater imitates the waters in the nature and creates various forms in the garden, which can make it possible to enjoy the view around the world in one garden.

■ ROCK-PLANTTall trees can strengthen the visual height of the moutain while short ones can create a natural scenery.

■ WATER-PLANTPlant can decorate the bank and some aquatic plants, like lotus, can create a special seasonal scenery in the garden.

■ PLANT-PLANTPlant can be grown in different forms-isolated planting or group planting, which can create typical sceneries.

■ ROCK-BUILDINGBuildings can be constructed in the moutain to equip a broad vision or near the moutain to equip a good background.

■ WATER-BUILDINGBuildings can have some interactions with the water and this leads to various architectural types, like Xuan and Fang.

■ PLANT-BUILDINGPlant can help to define the theme of the building and soften the hard lines of the architecture and enhance the depth of the field.

■ BUILDING-BUILDINGBuildings can be linked by porches, or by the pavements in the garden. The former one can create some transition room and the latter one can enrich the experience in the garden.

Wetlands In Jiangsu

Designed object is a site on the east of Xuanwu Lake, where a park is to be built for Jiangsu Urban Culture Exposition to echo Nanjing Youth Olympic Games and show urban cultural features of Jiangsu Province, contributing to smooth development of cultural protection and cultural innovation in Jiangsu Province.

Jiangsu Province is featured with so-called “Shuixiang” culture which means that every city there has its distinctive wetlands of a great many types containing both landscape value and ecological significance. This designed object meets the requirements for waters for its location adjacent to Xuanwu Lake. Therefore, “Shuixiang” culture is employed and reflected upon landscape of wetlands. In this design, the exposition park includes statistical classification of the type of wetlands in every city in Jiangsu Province before each type is defined as coastal wetlands, riverine wetlands, lake wetlands, marsh wetlands, or man-made wetlands and is arranged in the site. Design scheme is finally formed by relating current condition of the ground to characteristics of each type of wetlands and requirements for planting on these wetlands.

Background Analysis

Tourists Market Analysis of Tangshan Demand Analysis of Hot SpringSite tourist projects are mainly aimed at students, whose consuming capacity is quite limited, and consider the need of other groups of tourists as well. Relaxation and entertainment are the core of site tourist projects in which tourists enjoy strong freedom. One-day tour and two-day tour are the main tourist modes.According to the prediction of General Plan for Newly-Developed District of Tangshan of Nanjing City, 2030 will witness an annual tourist flow of 20 million, an annual revenue of ¥39,900 million, and a per capita consumption of ¥1,700. With the consideration of location, transportation, and market condition, site tourist projects in Tangshan are predicted to embrace an estimate of 800,000 tourists in 2030.

According to investigation, Tangshan Hot Spring enjoys a good reputation and a vast market with a continuous stream of tourists who would like to visit this spring twice or more and stay there for one or two days. Turnover mainly comes from hot spring, catering, and lodging. Open-air spa is one of the most popular hot spring service.Based on Maslow’s hierarchy of need theory and relevant survey, hot spring service is classified according to basic need for amusement, physical health, and mental pursuit, respectively referring to the common, sub-healthy people, and high-spending crowd. There are indoor and outdoor hot springs, some of which are offered with catering and massage with the purpose to improve their function of health preservation.

Plant Resources Analysis

Currently, vegetation in Tangshan Mountain demonstrates a trend of succession, in which evergreen coniferous plants, such as Pinus massonianas, have started to be replaced by deciduous tall trees of fagaceae. Southern Tangshan Mountain is mainly covered by evergreen and deciduous broad-leaved forests while Northern Tangshan Mountain is mainly covered by evergreen coniferous forest and deciduous broad-leaved forest. This plan is designed to be consistent with natural evolution and to create a natural landscape characterized by marked cycles of seasons.

According to some documents, the plants are devided into three categories, which account for different propotions when it comes to ecological sensity.

Weight index of all the impact factors of ecological sensitivity are tested for consistensy with the application of matrix. Excel is employed for scoring as well as evaluation, and calculates numerical value of weighting applied to constructional adaptability superposition afterwards, with which final constructional classification can be made. In this scoring and evaluation of ecological sensitivity, every factor is scored with weighting on the basis of adjustment according to soil, vegetation, waters, and land forms. Then, the result of weighting can be calculated out.

Picture on the left is based on evaluation factors of ecological sensitivity that have been superposed in conformity with their weight and are then extracted out to form the final classification. Chart on the right refers to absolute no-construction zone, no-construction zone, restricted construction zone, and appropriate construction zone. In no-construction zone, artificial facilities are allowed to be constructed in a small number; in restricted and appropriate construction zone, artificial facilities can be constructed in a proper way.

■ I believe that...landscape design has to fulfill the requirements of the space, the function, the culture and the nature. In another

word, it has to talk to them, to communicate with them, or even fall in love with them.

■ In my eyes, there are two directions, four factors when talking about landscape architecture. The first is about the space-function, and

the other one is about the culture-nature.

■ It is undeniable that ...when the design of the space and the function is amazing, the accomplishment of the culture and the nature can make it a

success. In my opinion, during the exploring period of the design, a new approach that can combine the four factors is going to appear.

As it is a design cooperated by all the class, it can recall the unforgettable memories of the time we spent together. Thus, we would like to freeze our smiling faces on the road we walk by and in front of the academic building we have lessons, emphasizing the concept by using the light. In another word, light up the academic building of the school of architecture.Considering the variability of the materials, we would like to use some available materials to create the wonderful result. Therefor we use some disposable bowls with some mixture of ink and water to pile up or arrange in a square. The light of the bowls on the bottom is cool light, while the light of the photo box on the top is warm light, so the photos can be highlight and attract people to concentrate on the content of the photos and understand our idea of the lighting design.
