SMArt BUILDING - SRG PARTNERSHIP
FEBRUARY-JUNE , 2011
While a student, I had the opportunity to intern at SRG Partenership. I worked primarily on the DD phase of the SMArt Building, a science, math, art, and nursing facility at Gray’s Harbor College. My contributions to the project included daylight simulation, modeling in Revit and SketchUp, detail work in Revit, rendering in Kerkythea and participating in project team coordination meetings.

CORRIDOR DEVELOPMENT
Daylight simulation in Radiance was used, in this case, to evaluate the atrium glass, and materials used in the corridor. Luminance images indicate
of 1:100 (darkest:lightest, in cd/m2) or higher used to indicate glare conditions that might cause visual discomfort.

CLASSROOM DEVELOPMENT
A key role I played during my internship was in designing the classroom skylights. The building is tucked into a steep hillside, so the only way to daylight the 1st Floor classrooms is via skylight. It was important for our desing team to maintain a visual connection to the outdoors in all learning spaces.
Skylights were designed to be transparent, with visual access to the sky from all seated positions. I ran an extensive daylight analysis in Ecotect and Radiance to eliminate ALL direct sunlight to work spaces, while maintaining the visual
serves the purpose of diffusing direct sunlight, while supporting many of the technological features of this contemporary classroom.

DAYLIGHT PATTERN GUIDE
DEC 2009- AUG 2010
This project, a collaboration between IDL Seattle, IDL Boise, and the New Buildings Institute, is intended as a guide for daylighting in buildings based on common design patterns and daylighting schemes.
This guide is a web-based tool. My role in the project included building models in Revit, SketchUp and Ecotect, scripting and running batch simulations in Radiance via Ecotect, synthesizing data through diagrams, and collaborating with web designers.

INTEGRATED DESIGN LABDAYLIGHT SIMULATION
JUNE 2008- AUG 2010
My work at the Integrated Design Lab has consisted primarily of daylight simulation in Ecotect and Radiance. This project, a Net Zero addition to Hood River Middle School by Opsis Architects in Portland was modeled in Revit, and imported to Ecotect where I ran a daylight factor study. This study tells what percentage of outdoor light will make it inside with a variety of roof monitor options.

MASTER’S THESIS PROJECT:CITY WATER
WINTER/SPRING, 2011
This thesis began as an investigation on what it would mean to implement an open stormwater system in downtown Seattle, based on precedents in Copenhagen and Malmö. The resulting design of a bathing facility for Elliott Bay at Pier 48.
The design explores our relationship to stormwater and the bay, ans seeks to create a sense of public ownership over the quality of water in the Puget Sound. Rendering from Tempered Pool

PUBLIC SPACES | PUBLIC LIFE STUDIO WITH GEHL ARCHITECTS
WINTER, 2010
The goal of this project was to design a dense urban town center around the Mt. Baker light rail station. The studio began with an interdisciplinary study trip to Copenhagen, where we toured with Gehl architects for 2 weeks, learning about their approach to designing spaces for people.
This project seeks to revitalize an abandoned grocery center and unused green space through the combination of agriculture, food production, and marketplaces.
Collaboration by: Sarah Marshall, Maggie Winter, Christy Alexander, and Deanna Goldy

Goal: Create East/West links across Rainier
Goal: Balance of agriculture and commerce
Goal: Create a program of interdependent activities around light rail station
Proposal: Re-route vehicle
pedestrian link across Rainier
Proposal: Create high density pedestrian areas on both sides of Rainier
Proposal: New buildings to encourage density around the light rail station

NORTHLAKE WHARF
WINTER, 2009
The goal of the Northlake Wharf is to provide access to the water for all. In designing this project the democratic character of Wallingford itself had a profound
other instead of the water; views are shared via streets that run south to Lake Union.
The program was divided into two buildings: one containing all of the conditioned spaces and the other housing the restoration shop and the sail loft.

SCHOOL OF URBAN HORTICULTURE
AUTUMN, 2008
The School of Urban Horticulture was designed as a part of a larger campus, the Northwest Institute for Sustainable Technologies. This project included a Master Plan of the entire campus by the whole studio, and individual design projects for the various schools on the campus.

CONSERVATORY ROOF: Glass conservatory roof provides light for plants; operable panels allow building to breathe.
GREEN SCREEN: Green wall is supported on exterior walkways; shade laboratories in summer and allow maximum light during winter.
WALKWAYS: Metal grate with vertical slats that allow some light penetration into labs.
GLASS CURTAIN WALL: Encloses entire laboratory space, hung from the steel frame system behind it.
STEEL FRAME: Consists of castellated girders that allow utilities to run through them to vertical, light/air shafts at the east end of the laboratory.
CONCRETE FRAME: A forest of concrete columns are used for for the ground level open space.

COLLAB/FAB STUDIO: TWISP SPROUTHOUSE
AUTUMN, 2008
The goal of this studio was revive a former Forest Service complex as a center for agriculture in the heart of downtown Twisp.
Based on community meetings, the town agreed that gardening and agriculture was a unifying link amongst townspeople, yet the town needed to kickstart ideas about developing this site.
Our studio designed the Sprouthouse as part functional greenhouse and part art installiation to plant the idea of change on the site. The project is installed at the edge of an otherwise closed site and allows visual access and passage through into the Forest Service complex.
