❤Symptoms

Common heart attack symptoms

include:

• Pressure, tightness, pain, or a squeezing or aching sensation in your chest or arms that may spread to your neck, jaw or back)

• A feeling of fullness, nausea, indigestion, heartburn or abdominal pain

• Shortness of breath

• Sweating or a cold sweat

• Feelings of anxiety or an impending sense of doom

• Fatigue

• Trouble sleeping

• Lightheadedness or dizziness

A heart attack occurs when one or more of the arteries supplying your heart with oxygen-rich blood (coronary arteries) become blocked. Over time, a coronary artery can become narrowed from the buildup of various substances, including cholesterol and other substances. This buildup — collectively known as plaques — in arteries throughout the body is called atherosclerosis. When your coronary arteries have narrowed due to atherosclerosis, the condition is known as coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is the underlying cause

of most heart attacks.During a heart attack, one of these plaques can rupture and spill out cholesterol and other substances into the bloodstream. A blood clot forms at the site of the rupture, partly because the body is confused and is trying to repair the injured blood vessel. If the clot is large enough, it can completely block the flow of blood through the coronary artery.Another cause of a heart attack is a spasm of a coronary artery that shuts down blood flow to part of the heart muscle. Drugs, such as cocaine, can cause such a life-threatening spasm. A heart attack can also occur due to a tear in the heart artery (spontaneous coronary artery dissection). Other uncommon causes of heart attack include small blood clots or tumors that have traveled from other parts of the body (coronary embolism). Heart attacks can also occur if blood flow to the heart is severely decreased, in situations such as very low blood pressure (shock).

Age Men who are 45 or older and women who are 55 or older are more likely to have a heart attack.

Tobacco Smoking and long-term exposure to secondhand smoke damage the interior walls of arteries allowing deposits of cholesterol to collect and slow blood flow.

Lack of physical activity An inactive lifestyle contributes to high blood cholesterol levels and obesity. Exercise is beneficial in lowering high blood pressure.

High blood cholesterol or triglyceride levels Cholesterol is a major part of the deposits that can narrow arteries that supply your heart.

Stress You may respond to stress in ways that can increase your risk of a heart attack.

Diabetes Diabetes is the inability of your body to adequately produce insulin or respond to insulin need properly. Uncontrolled diabetes increases your risk of a heart attack.

Family history of heart attack If your siblings, parents or grandparents have had early heart attacks (by age 55 for male relatives and by age 65 for female relatives), you may be at increased risk.

Illegal drug use Using stimulant drugs can trigger a spasm of your coronary arteries that can cause a heart attack.

High blood pressure High blood pressure can damage arteries that feed your heart by accelerating atherosclerosis.

Obesity Obesity raises the risk of heart disease since it is associated with high blood cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and diabetes.

A history of preeclampsia This condition causes high blood pressure during pregnancy, and increases the lifetime risk of heart disease.

Heart attack complications are often related to the damage done to your heart during a heart attack. This damage can lead to the following conditions:

• Abnormal Heart Rhythms (arrhythmias) If your heart muscle is damaged from a heart attack, electrical “short circuits” can develop, resulting in abnormal heart rhythms, some of which can be serious, even fatal.

• Heart Failure The amount of damaged tissue in your heart may be so great that the remaining heart muscle can’t do an adequate job of pumping blood out of your heart.

Heart failure may be a temporary problem that goes away after your heart, which has been stunned by a heart attack, recovers. However, it can also be a chronic condition resulting from extensive and permanent damage to your heart following your heart attack.

• Heart Rupture Areas of heart muscle weakened by a heart attack can rupture, leaving a hole in part of the heart. This rupture is often fatal.

• Valve Problems Heart valves damaged during a heart attack may develop severe, life-threatening leakage problems.

How you live your life affects the health of your heart. Taking the following steps can help you not only prevent but also recover from a heart attack:

1. Don’t smoke. 2. Avoid secondhand smoke. 3. Check your blood pressure and

cholesterol levels. 4. Get regular medical checkups. 5. Exercise regularly. 6. Maintain a healthy weight.. 7. Eat a heart-healthy diet. 8. Manage diabetes. 9. Control stress. 10. If you drink alcohol,

do so in moderation.

Medications Medications given to treat a heart attack include:

Aspirin. Thrombolytics. Super aspirins. Other blood-thinners. Pain relievers. Nitroglycerin. Beta blockers. ACE inhibitors. Lowering cholesterol.

Treatments & DrugsIf you encounter someone who is unconscious from a presumed heart attack, call for emergency medical help. If you have received training in emergency procedures, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This helps deliver oxygen to the body and brain.

According to guidelines by the American Heart Association, regardless of whether you’ve been trained, you should begin CPR with chest compressions. Press down about 2 inches (5 centimeters) on the person’s chest for each

compression at a rate of about 100 a minute. If you’ve been trained in

CPR, check the person’s airway and deliver rescue breaths after every 30 compressions. If you haven’t

been trained, continue doing only compressions until help arrives.

What to do if you see someone having a heart attack

If you have a heart attack, your heart attack treatment at a hospital varies depending on the situation. You may be treated with medications, undergo an invasive procedure or both — depending on the severity of your condition and the amount of damage to your heart.

CEPHALOPODS

264

Over 700 species of cephalopods have been identified, and they are divided into the subclasses Coleoidea (cuttlefish, squid, and octopus) and Nautiloidea (nautiluses). Cephalopods inhabit all of the world’s oceans and occur at a wide range of depths, from ocean bottoms (benthic species) to open waters (pelagic species). They are also diverse in size, ranging from the centimeters-long Californian octopus (Octopus micropyrsus) to giant squid (Architeuthis), some of which measure over 18 meters long. Although cephalopod species have many differences among them, they all share several common features.

Common OctopusOctopus vulgarisF: Octopodidae4.5 ft/1.3 mGlobally widespread in tropical and warm temperate waters, this octopus typically has a warty body and two rows of suckers on its arms.

Hapalochlaena lunaluta

F: Octopodidae6-8 in/15-20 cm

This octopus preys on crustaceans and fish in the

western Pacific, paralyzing them with venomous saliva

that is also potentially fatal to humans.

OCTOPUSPacific Long-Armed Octopus Ocotpus sp.F: Octopodidae2 in/5cmOne of several octopuses with especially long arms, adults of this species frequest sandy lagoons, but translucent juveniles live among oceanic plankton.

Atlantic OctopusOctopus sp.F: Octopodidae20-28 in/50-70 cmDNA analysis has revealed a number of similar octopus species, including this one, that are related to the common octopus, revealing hidden biodiversity.

North Pacific Giant OctopusEnteroctopus dofleini F: Octopodidae6.5 ft/2 m

Perhaps the largest of all octopuses, this animal is surprisingly short-lived. Females are diligent caretakers of their huge broods.

Vampire SquidVampyroteuthis infernalisF: Vampyroteuthidae4-6 in/10-15 cmThis deep-sea cephalopod—with characteristics seemingly intermediate between squid and octopus— has fins projecting from its mantle and light producing organs covering the body.

Each year, millions of people visit Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore: most to enjoy the beach. The residential and industrial development of the Lake Michigan shoreline makes it different for many people to realize that this is a wild and unforgiving resource. Nature has full control of the conditions. Make sure that the memories of your visit are good ones by following the guidelines to safety.

Lake & BeachSafety

Guidelines to

SafetyWater Sandbars Storms Shelf Ice

Never swim alone. Swim buddies can call for help when you cannot.

Keep your children in sight at all times.Whether walking on the beach or swimming in the lake, children can disappear very quickly.

Watch your feet. The lake bottom and beach are not groomed or cleaned.

Numerous drop-offs and holes as well as natural and man-made debris can be anywhere.

Be weather ready. Wear sunscreen and a hat. Bring a sweater when it is cool.

Be aware of the water quality. Natural and man-made sources of contamination can affect water quality. If the water looks dirty, it probably is.

The weather along the lake can change very quickly. Thunderstorms can develop with little warning. These storms can stir the waters and make swimming extremely dangerous. Lightening can strike up to 20 miles from the actual storm. If you can hear the thunder of an approaching storm, get out of the water and off the beach.

When frozen, Lake Michigan resembles an arctic landscape. Unlike the Arctic, the lake ice is full of hidden thin spots and gaps. The ice forms scenic landscapes that people like to view. Please admire this spectacular formation from afar. It is never safe to walk upon. Stay off the Ice!

Remember, danger exists even when signs are not posted. Always think safety!

The lake can change from calm and inviting to rough and deadly within minutes. Strong winds create steep and irregular waves that can overwhelm even expert swimmers. If water is largely covered with whitecaps and waves are crashing on the shore, it is too dangerous for swimming or wading. People have died. WHITE WAVES KILL.

If you hear lifeguards, radio or television making announcements that warn of dangerous water conditions, heed these warnings and stay out of the lake. The shoreline is the same throughout the park. Conditions are similar all along the beach front. If it is too dangerous to swim somewhere, it is too dangerous to swim anywhere.

Sandbars run parallel to the shoreline. While fun to play on, they are also dangerous. Sandbars change on a daily bass. The edges are loose and lead into much deeper water. A sandbar a foot or two below the surface can have fifteen foot deep water on either side.

Sandbars lure poor or non-swimmers farther into the lake than intended. An unexpected wave from a passing boat, a sudden increase in waves from a passing storm or just a misstep can cause trouble for anyone. Poor swimmers should not venture out on these sandbars.
