The area around our school is developingrapidly. With this in mind our school is in need a of a welcome center that is notonly interesting and beautiful. We are also in dire need of a space that is brings students, faculty, and our neighbours closer.

The form, space, and materials, shouldallow the viewer as much visual accesspossible to the program that is being put in motion.

The auditorium is based on several historictheatres, plazas, and public forums. The seating is simple utilizing the ramp as chairs. Everyone is forced inwards, to inspire a feeling of being one community.

During the day the space should be busyclasses taking care of the green roof, officestaking care of students, lectures taking place in the auditorium. It should also be aplace of rest for the students. Where onecan get a cup coffee at Hart and sit outside.

At night the space should belong to East Village. Open to our neighbours to exhibitart, host lectures themselves, or even have workshops for students.

The first impression was to leave the auditorium openair however it eventually became a constraint to producea form of long-span structure as well as incorporate someform of sustainable design In this a canopy was developedthat could act as a heat chimney as well as allow cross ventilation for the structure. The entire building is set into the earth in the hopes that this will aid in keeping the temperature constant. This serves another purpose of addressing issue with the buildings overall height allowingit to blend into the area better in terms of scale.

When one comes across this site in the early morningan almost intense feeling ofalienation rest upon ones soul. The elements that conspire with onanother to produce this are the same elements that are the natural ingredients for this study into sustainable living. It is the water itself that lendsto the feeling that one is trulyalone. The fog that rolls into the landscape obscures and stretches the imagination. Withthis an attempt to utilize this elements through multiple passive and mechanical systems would be the grounds that this project is based on. To the right one will notice first, second, and third tier systems. While obscure they are still systems that can be easily implemented and made to betternot just the wellbeing of the occupant , but also the neighbouring multitudes as well.

The Process of form finding was to start.with a simple cube oriented in a way that would collect the most fog in the area. From there it was a simple leap to looking for a platonic solid that could cut or bend the wind in a way that would benefit the occupants. The form being a basic triangle was then tapered to imply a slantedroof. As the process went on the programof a three bedroom house began to shapethe geometry. Last but not least solar energyHelped to refine and shape the object. Finally we are left with a model that is open to elements, with green space being implied.

Thank you for the time you took looking through some of my work.I am a Fourth year student of Newschool of Architecture and Design.I am particularly interested in learning about the real world applications of design, fabrication, and finding a company that I can compliment with my skill sets.

Best Regards,Austin R [email protected]
