Promotion ofHealth&Well-Being • Prevention of Illness • Treatment of Medical Conditions
Traditional ChineseAcupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the componentparts of Chinese medicine, a system of
medical care that has continuously in existencefor approximately 3000 years.
Acupuncture can influence 3 areas of health care:
• Promotion of Health & Well-Being
• Prevention of Illness
• Treatment of Various Medical Conditions
Acupuncture is the art and science ofmanipulating the blood flow of Qi (energy) and
Xue (blood) through the body’s channels to promotenatural healing and improve the body’s functioning.
Traditional Chinese Medicine explains thatthere are channels of energy which run in
regular patterns through the body and over thesurface of the body transporting essential substances
to the organ systems, tissues and bones.
Acupuncture Treatment:The Process
TreatmentIn traditional Chinese Acupuncture, needles are
placed in specific places or “points” in the channels toalter the floe or movement of the patient’s Qi. Thealteration of the flow of Qi allows healing to occur.
Acupuncture is quite safe. The physician will beusing sterile disposable one-time use stainless
steel needles. The point is smooth and insertionis through the skin is not as painful as receivingan injection or blood sampling. Some treatments
may also require the Chinese herb moxa.
ExperiencePeople experience acupuncture needling differently. Most patients feel only minimal pain as the needles
are inserted; so feel a heavy sensation, some feel a “flow-ing” sensation and a few feel an electrical
tingling in the area of the needles. It is quite commonwith treatment to have a sensation of deep relaxation or
even mild disorientation following the treatment.
Types ofConditions TreatedThe physician, based on a comprehensive
medical history, your current condition andan assessment of the other treatments you havereceived or are receiving, can help you decide if
acupuncture is appropriate for you.
Examples of conditions treated include:
• Promotion of Health & Well-Being• Tonification
• Prevention of Illness• Tension/Stress
• Pain Management Control- cancer pain
- neuritis/neuralgias• Respitory Disorders
- sinusitis- asthma
- recurrent chest infections• Neurological Disorders
- headaches- early multiple sclerosis
- paralysis• Orthopedic/Sports Injuries
- sprains
- tendonitis- low back pain/sciatica
- arthritis
