The Numinous:

An Exploration of the experiential possibilities of the constituents of architecture.

Thesis Project , 2013

The thesis project aimed at a place to bring forth the “being" . “A place with

spiritual milieu to provide a transcendental experience to its citizens in the

midst of the city “.

An exhaustive research on the subject of spirituality and architecture was carried and

the relation of the built environment in affecting the religious experience was thus

derived.

The experiential possibilities of architectural constituents were studied in this regard .

The concept of phenomenology emerged.

This study was backed by a detailed field survey as well as primary and secondary

case studies .

The project :

80 Ha landscape of “AASTHAKUNJ” in the concrete jungle of NEHRU PLACE, New

Delhi with its” festival congregation space chosen for design intervention.

The space entailed designing of yoga and meditation marts amongst nature trails,

exhibition spaces and “numinous” sit outs space .

THE APPROACH / METHODOLOGY:

1. INTERVENTION ZONE STUDY : CONTOUR ANALYSIS, SLOPE

ANALYSIS, VEGETATION MAPPING, POTENTIAL ZONES OF

STUDY.

2. IDENTIFICATION OF POTENTIAL ZONES FOR INTERVENTION.

3. FRAMEWORK DESIGN AT MACRO LEVEL

4. DETAILED DESIGN OF REPRESENTATIVE SEGMENTS

BUILD LESS

Urban Design Studio, 2O13

The site comprising of mainly farmlands, is a part of the northwest

extension of the Aravalli range and part of the “protected” ridge.

The Ridge Its status as being “protected” under the policies and guidelines ,

formed basis for the housing.

Basis for build less:

It’s critical role in pollution absorption, groundwater recharge and

environment amelioration.

Validating the build less approach:

History

The master plan was designed as the:

“gateway to the ridge”, a “BUILD LESS” approach.

Countering models of TOD or Transit Oriented Development, “Ghittorni” is established as self sustaining , revenue generating,

community .

Concepts of horticulture , farming , Native to Ghittorni are re-introduced.

To Provide people with income opportunities , institutions and facilities are set up to support the community.

the Concept of fixed population:

the numbers are estimated and ONLY requisite housing provided.

This is sustained through the intrinsic capacity of the site in terms of its rersources.

FURTHUR The master plan entailed :

1. Framing of policies and guidelines to regulate growth as per predetermined estimates.

2. Detailed design scheme for ghiottorni village , the farmhouses ,

3. Detailed design scheme for the interface between the village and farmhouses.

4. Development of the “new residential” housing

5. Development of facilities and institutions

Farmhouses And Village Interface:

A Detailed Design Approach:

Vision:

To facilitate the evolution of a cohesive urban form to support the village -country home

interface.

Supporting the unique fabrics of the country homes and village, goals of “ rightful

acquisition, compensation” “mobility and accessibility “,” safety and comfort” are

targeted.

Design strategies, guidelines and policies entailing the above goals are made part of

the design process, both at the level of the master plan as well as throughout the various

design stages at the micro level.

This includes street character, building facades, tree plantations, community greens

amongst others.

Community Club ,Noida

Design Studio , 2010

The concept of the club is to create a social hub where all functional blocks within the club interact with each other.

The club is thus oriented around a central courtyard and a swimming pool .

This aspect of social interaction was carried out on all floors inside the club .

The concept and design intervention were supported by detailed field surveys and case studies of recreational clubs here in dehi.
