SHELTER DESIGN

This studio focused on the idea of designing disaster relief shelters using a waffling technique for construction so that they may be flat packed and shipped to areas in need.

My group of 6 focused on a superdome situation where people would be moved to a sports stadium for shelter. Our goal was to disperse people into the stands of the stadium to create a less crowded space where the victims could star t to psychologically recover from their experience.

FURNITURE

The furniture system for our shelter is designed as a modular system of components which can be combined to create custom furniture layouts. These modular pieces engage a bar along the wall of the shelter, while the legs of the unit are used to tie multiple surfaces together. Along with the modular units, which can create beds and benches, there is a set of free floating furniture pieces which includes 2 stools and a table.

This studio revolved around the design of a boutique hotel which could be a symbol of the ar t culture in Cincinnati. Along with the typical hotel program of guest rooms and lobby space our program included a retail store which would sell pieces by local ar tists,

a bar, and 3 rentable function rooms. The scheme for this design originated from ideas of ar t nouveau which focus on natural forms, however this design aims to abstract these natural forms to create a sense of nature without overstating this naturalism.

MT. ADAMS CULINARY CENTER AND DINNER THEATRE

Through designing a culinary center and an accompanying dinner theatre this studio explored ideas of siting and the relationship between two distinct but related buildings. By choosing a site on top of a sizeable hill, we were also challenged to design within a steep topography. By placing the 2 buildings close to one another and creating an outdoor passage within the space between them a dialogue with each building is created. This dialogue then supports an interaction between the users of each program.

CLIFTON LITERARY CENTER

The Center for Literary Studies is a place for advanced studies of reading, writing, and performances. It is a place that houses specific book collections and topical exhibits - serving as a place for the public to experience the display, organization, and access of the work of visiting scholars. The Center is a place for a visiting author to work and interact with the public.

MODULAR UNIT

Working together as a studio we were challenged to design a modular unit which could be combined in some way with other units to create occupiable space. Our unit was designed to incorporate a series of notches which were the same width as the side of the unit. This enabled multiple moments where 2 units could engage one another and begin to shape an interesting and unique space. The unit is made up of an OSB ribbon which holds together a foam insulation core.

INTELLIGENTSIA

Intelligentsia is a small high end coffee shop. We were asked to design 3 unique stores in 3 distinct locations.

The Old Town location is in a grocery store and is mostly black and white with just a few pops of color. The plan below corresponds with the Old Town location.

The Logan Square location is in a classic storefront in a hip neighborhood of Chicago. Most of the design is fairly simple, allowing for the tiles around the bar to have maximum visual impact.

MEMORIAL SLOAN KETTERING CANCER CENTER

The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center will be an outpatient cancer center on 74th St. overlooking the East River in New York. The site is shared between the MSK cancer center and City University of New York. Perkins Eastman designed for the medical program needs of MSK while Ennead Architects designed the educational half of the building. The cancer center has a focus on patient comfort and interaction while still catering to the needs of the medical staff.

My role in the design process was to help with laying out medical exam rooms with specific programmatic needs and creating presentations for the client showing these layouts.

RED HOUSE TO BAUHAUS

Red House to Bauhaus was a trip designed to show the emergence of modernism by studying architecture from the ar ts and crafts period through to the beginnings of modernism and the star t of the bauhaus. To study really study all these styles of architecture we traveled through Europe for 2 months and visited 9 countries including the UK, France, Germany and Spain.

Being able to experience these remarkable spaces in person was a once in a lifetime opportunity. It was so inspiring being able to occupy spaces that are so innovative, and special. The trip really enriched my understanding of what architecture can and should be.
