CORPERATE PROJECT • ADVERTISING AGENCY C4

Lobby

Scope of project: Create a flexible space layout for an ever-growing advertising agency using systems furniture. Along with that, one item of ‘trash’ will be turned into ‘treasure’ to be used for function, aesthetics, or both.

Systems furniture was used so that as the com-pany expanded or re-sized, things could be added and moved around easily.

C4 is a marketing company located next to the bay in downtown San Franciscon, on the 30th floor of a high-rise building. As an eco-friendly company, the want was for the office to design to reflect an environmentally conscious view with its use of “green” and recylcled materials while also being fun and vibrant. By using the two tones of grean in the company logo, adding a darker blue, and pops of complementary orange, we designed an energetic, stimulating, and inspiring work environment. The space is open with limited solid walls to allow for a small community feel, where employees can work together at all times with ease. The floor to ceilng windows located on 3 of the 4 walls capture amazing views that are sure to inspire any worker.

Trash to Treasure. The recycled item we chose to incor-porate in our design was recycled french doors. Older doors can often be discarded because they are single-paned and therefore not energy efficient.

We use these doors as separation between offices for area managers and coordinators. The glass allows for an open feeling and light to pass through. The separation from the rest of the office space gives these areas a little hierarchy, but while still encouraging ease of interaction between everyone.

Comfortable, informal seating was chosen to use in the collaborative room so that people could be more creative and free with their work.

Just like other areas in the building, cork flooring was used in the lounge to calm the noise of high-heels. This room was meant to feel like an escape from the work environment with fun, clean materials and furni-ture.

HOSPITALITY PROJECT• COFFEE SHOP ‘MUG BUG’Scope of project: Develop a chain ‘coffee house’ that will be built in relatively small college towns based on location and purpose; typology design by physical 3D modeling.

Model Process

Final Model: Done at 1/2” scale

Location: Corner of 2nd St & Walnut St, Chico, CA

Name: Originally wanted a title that was a play on terms used in the cof-fee business, so after deciding on a more ‘natural’ theme i settle on the name “Mug Bug.”

History

A coffee house is a place where coffee, espresso based drinks, teas, and light snacks are served. The first record of public coffee houses dates back to around 1475 in the Turkish city of Constantinople, which is present day Istanbul, where coffee was served strong. It wasn’t until around 1529 in Europe that people started putting creamer and sweeteners in their coffee. During that time, Vienna was invaded by the Turkish army, who then left many bags of cof-fee behind that they used to open a coffee house. In 1652 the first shop in England opened, where they later called their coffee houses “penny universities” becasue thats how much cof-fee cost then. The idea traveled to Italy in 1654, Paris in 1672, and Germany in 1673. It wasn’t until after America was colonized that our first coffee house opened in New York in 1792. The most wide-spread coffee house of them all is Starbucks, who opened their first store in Seattle in 1971.

Inside, the space feels natural with the use of various wood work that ties different elements of the space together. A varient of lime- green was used becasue it is a color that is both relaxing and that gives a sense of renewal.

A big component of the space is the custom shelving system that will shelve products and local art pieces, that also ties in with the ceiling work and lattice work outside. Along with that, to en-volve the community, black & white photos will be displayed and switched out monthly.

For the outside, the small land that’s there, was utilized as an outdoor patio for a few chairs and tables. An overhang was designed to collaborate with the interior, and as plants grow up over-time, it will feel as if you’re a “bug” in a garden.

There is also a bike rack out front to the left of the entrance to encourage people riding their bikes around town to stop by.

History/Program/ Concept

For the coffee house I designed, my main inspiration were ‘city-like’ cafes and the kind of at-moshere they entail. It needed to be a fun, relaxing spot for people to come relax and hang out in a ‘naturally-ecletic’ sense, making guests feel welcome.

LIGHTING & DESIGN•EVALUATION & SOLUTION• JON & BON’S YOGURT SHOPPEScope of project: Choose a local store and evaluate the space’s light through foot candle measurements. Give reasons for why it doesn’t work and how it could be better, then propose a possible design solution that revolves around a more appropriate lighting arrangement.

Lighting and Ceiling Fixtures

Conclusion of StudyAfter studying the space, taking light readings and pictures, and analyzing the lighting conditions, it was found that the lighting is sufficient enough for the space and work environment, however the aesthetic appearance of the lights and the way they are laid out is not that attrac-tive. The fans do not match and only one of them houses lights(4). The lines of florescent lamps are uncovered, mismatched, and dirty. If the wall colors were a lighter color, it would allow them to have fewer lights and still be bright enough for the work done in the space.

COMMUNITY PROJECT• FRUGAL HOUSE “TWIN BOYS’ BEDROOM”

Project Outline

Frugal House is a fundraiser for the North State Symphony in Chico, CA that gets students envolved in their area of interest and gives them some experience in the field.

The basis of the project is that someone is asked to volunteer their home, in this years case, the family was moving out so it was perfect, and then teams of 6-8 people, along with a professor/ mentor, are assigned a room in the house. Then we are given an overall theme for the house and a scenario of who would inhabit each space. Then, we’re only allowed to look around consignment stores, refurbished stores, or ask for donations.

This years theme was 60’s Modern, and my team was assigned a bedroom for 10 year-old twin boys. Working with a budget of $300 dollars, our goal was to have a space for sleeping, homework, and playing, all within a 120 sq. ft. cube.

In the end we went with a retro- spacey look that I’m sure any young boy would find cool and an awesome space to hang out in.

On one of the walls, I came up with this organic, rectangular design that featured one of our colors, yellow. We made it huge, wrapping it around corners and onto the ceiling. We kept the main color of the walls a neutral, so as not to make the space feel smaller than it already was.

Page 17: Portfolio

To keep with the organic- type shapes, some of my teamates designed this table where we shaped a piece of wood into a bean, cut a hole for cords, screwed some legs in from an old desk, and stained it red give the room a pop of color.

We had this shelving unit donated to us, so to keep with the curvey- edged rect-angles, we sawed pieces of wood for the corners to fit at the ends of the cubbies to mimic the shapes on the wall, then painted everything with a fresh coat of white paint.

Page 18: Portfolio

To conserve the small bit of horizontal space, we decided to go vertical with the use of a bunk bed that we got for a fairly reasonable price. Then we built a cover to go around it to cover up the ugly metal frame and make the boys feel as if they we in a sleeping pod on a spce ship. Again, we kept with the curvey edges, and sanded, stained it yellow, and applied a coat of poly on the particle board to tie in with the yellow on the wall.

Page 19: Portfolio

The walk- in closet was given some organizational sheliving and baskets that would be condusive to twin boys.

My teammate came up with a story line of astronauts and paint-ed a series of pictures like a comic strip to explain why our room was a little more spacey.

DRAFTING EXAMPLES• VARIOUS PROJECTS OF HAND-DRAFTING

This was my first drafting assignment where my professor asked us to take measurements and draw up plans of our classroom. Drawings include floor plan, reflected ceiling plan, north section, and north, south, west, and east elevations.

Page 21: Portfolio

This was a case study assignment of Frank Llyod Wright’s Falling Water. The study included light fenestration, structure, and section. Geometry, sym-metry, and floor plan were some others. Then, as part of the presentation, we had to include a perspective drawing that best showcased the build-ing’s unique qualities, so I chose an outside perspective of the water flow-ing underneath and the different levels jutting outward.

Page 22: Portfolio

This project was one that was an actual job and piece of work of my profes-sor when he lived in New York. The goal of the assign-ment was to study his origi-nal CAD documents then make replicas by hand and change a few things. This assignment helped me with title blocks, writing, labeling, detailed drawings, and my overall drafting skills.
