DESCRIPTION:Situated at the outskirts of the city, near an industrial / retail area, the proposed sports arena tries to shelter itself from the negative space around it by positioning itself on an existing “sports axis” which extends from within the city’s central park towards the Cluj Arena football stadium , Aquatics Centre and other outdoor sports resorts. The main objective was to interconnect the public space around SPORTS ARENA to the existing promenade along the Somes river. The building itself tries to created leisure space around it by branching out into the surrounding space and making as many connexions possible. An important goal of the project’s urban planning stage was to separate as much as possible the pedestrian flow from the incoming traffic, Design wise, the building is inspired by the curvy water ways of the neighbouring Somes river. This design intention is maintained through-out the entire project : pedestrian paths , parking lots, floor plans and even escape routs, all follow elegant curvy lines which define the whole space and give it unity.

DESCRIPTION:

Staatsbosbeheer natural park is visited every year by 1,5 million people. The Visitors Centre needs to act as the starting point for a trip inside the park. The goal is to design a new visitors centre which will meet the demands of today and tomorrow. Taking into account the different types of activities (such as canoeing, skating, biking) and different types of visitors (children, students, elderly people) the design process focused into providing a “Launch Pad” into nature. Thus, after functionally dividing the spaces needed to be housed inside the centre, a central water-way is inserted inland in between the building to help and improve the centre’s much needed connection with water (liquid or frozen). From a programmatic point of view, water is introduced in much earlier stage to those visiting the Staasbosbeheer and thus creates a space with an meaningful identity. The white volumes are raised from the ground and act as a beacon for visitors which are on a boat-trip or canoeing through the reservation.

DESCRIPTION: The objective was to design office towers 35 storeys high which need to house besides the given office , a conference center and exhinition space at the first two floor levels. The proposed location for the project lacked identity. One of our design objectives was to make the new office high-rise a landmark for the area. We chose to design not one but two towers which twist and turn on a deviated axis thus making a connection at the mid-level floors. This simple gesture of “making a connexion” allows an easier transfer between the two towers and allways ensures an evacuation route in case of and emergency. Stuctural-wise, the connexion makes sense as we used a diagrid system consisting of diagonal steel collumns which join together every two stories. The sistem works by using an inner structural tube (the elevators and staircase shaft) and an exterior tube ( diagonal steel collumns)

DESCRIPTION:Our solution springs from the desire to offer each functional unit an independent structure. The whole complex thus is determined by the relationships which need to exist between these units. The area where they meet becomes soft and permeable and allows passage. Taking advantage of the natural slope, the whole complex curves inwards to shelter and shield away from view the Technical Courtyard and entrance to the Parking Levels, as the proposed urban block is opened on all it’s four sides. The three distinct volumes, which correspond to the three main functions of the complex, have a corresponding street to which they open up to. By twisting the edges of the whole alignment, three separate squares form in front of each of the three entrances thus marking their place at street level and making them easily accessible to pedestrians. One of our goals was to integrate the landscape at ground level by raising and lowering the floor slabs to fit the landscape elevation thus maintaining a close connection at street level.

DESCRIPTION:

The honeycomb is used with a great deal of success in the natural world by insects due to its both structural partitioning and efficiency. The pavilion tries not shelter but to envelop a fragment of the public space by making use of these structural biomechanics. The presence of the pavilion is less felt while you are inside it, as all the hexagonal cells open outwards, enabling the visitor to have a wide field of view. From a distance the pavilion takes the looks of an organic sculpture. There is a disconnection between the spectator’s assumed perception and the true spatial configuration of the pavilion.

DESCRIPTION:

Using plywood as the main construction ma-terial, the digital fabrication process is at the core of the design process. The parametric script evolves around the building material’s constraints by generating only planar geom-etry which can later be cut using a digital fab-rication CNC machine. Design-wise, a fluid shape is reduced to struc-tural shell made out of two sets of ribs (radial and horizontal) which provide structural sta-bility and still maintain the original shape.

DESCRIPTION:

The aim of this experiment was to obtain a fully controllable turning & twisting tower. The only input needed is the contour of a floor plan. The tower itself is generated through the parametric script which controls the number of storeys and there respective height while it also applies a twisting motion to one ore more of these storeys. One of the key aspects was to ensure that each storey is rotated at an angle which takes into account the rotation of its neighbouring storeys in order to somewhat maintain a structural coherence.
