CVExperience

Heath Nash- Junior designerI am currently working as junior designer/ project engineer for Cape Town based designer Heath Nash. During the last 6 months I have been working on a series of projects ranging from large-scale permanent and temporary instal-lations to small products for both local and international markets.

Hamachi Zushi- Co-ownerHamachi Zushi was a 6 month project setting up and running a ‘local sushi’ stall in Cape Town. Our aim was to get people to question where their produce was coming from and where the sense is in eating imported Norwegian salmon over fresher, tastier and more environmentally sound local fish.

BEng Design and Innovation- Goldsmiths/Queen Mary (2.1) This multidisciplinary design course gave me the opportunity to better understand the design process through a series of personal and group studio projects whilst also providing me with an understanding of engineering principals that are often so useful within a design environment. Heath NashThe majority of the work I did for Heath involved finding innovative reuses for recyclable materials. My role, as junior designer and project engineer meant following projects from initial client meetings through to designing and implementing our designs. Often working closely with external engineers, rigging crews and architects.

Cavendish Shopping Centre main atrium.

Worked with centre management and a rigging team to design and hang a long term installation piece made using waste from the surrounding shops.

Tasting room chandelier.Client- Speir Wine farm.

Assisted in the construction and installation of a piece made up of 1000 cut wine bottles.

Maseru SunConfrence room ceiling plan-

Confrence room ceiling- Maseru SunClient-Sun International

My role in this project was to design the ceiling structure and fit-tings - which after approval from the architects and client was put in to action. Also to work with the construction manager to plan the installation process.

Hamachi ZushiOur original presentation and ethos gained us places at two ofCape Towns most successful food markets. We focused on constantly experimenting with new ingredients and styles to give our loyal customer base something new every week.

Micro-farmBriefDesign a product to introduce the concept of home rearing and eating insects to Western society. As an alternative to conventional, unsustainable, sources of protein.

ConceptA short term ‘one life- cycle’ kit which guides the user through their first insect rearing experience. From setting up the farm and hatching the eggs, all the way through to cooking the fully grown crickets.

0 60number of >90 degree flex cycles

TKR Recovery KitAs part of a recovery kit for knee replacement patients, I designed and developed the following product.

Flex strips

BriefProvide a ‘low tech’ system to provide patients with a visual record of activity

ConceptA pop on strip containing a pigment, the pigments’ journey up the canal indicates the amount of flex cycles the patients knee has been through.

MaterialsLatex membrane with acrylicbased pigment

Cardboard TentBriefDesign a product to provide protection from wind and rain.

ConceptA short-term disposable shelter for use at festivals. Must be cheap to manufacture and recyclable.

MaterialsPolyurethane orplasma coated cardboard.

I was shocked by the huge numbers of tents that are sent to landfills during the tidy up process following festivals.

The solution I came up with was a fully recyclable ‘one use’ tent made fromwaterproof cardboard.

Natural Running Shoe

BriefDesign a product to assist a human lifestyle.

ConceptDesign a shoe which actively encourages athletes to return to a more natural style of running.

MaterialsSole- Kevlar/rubber compositeToe Pad- Urethane rubbershore hardness 30AUpper- Elastic and Nylon meshAchilles Support- Rubber tape reinforced Neoprene

The kevlar/rubber sole material pro-vides a lightweight form of protection. The orientation of the fibres means that the material will stretch along the length of the foot, complementing the way the arc acts as a natural spring.

Soft rubber provides a small amount of padding and also helps orientate the forefoot on impact.

Vibram sole material adds tread and replaceable protection from wear, increasing the lifetime of the shoe dramatically.

Neoprene and rubber achilles support aids the transition back to a natural running style.

Other Work Fordham Park youth

Shelter.

Worked alongside students from Deptford

Green high school and Handspring Design to provide a

youth shelter for the Fordham park regeneration scheme.

Giant Pencil.

Designed and built a 1.8m pencil commissioned by

illustrator Quentin Blake for use in Londons Big Draw Festival

2011.
