Featuring over 100 apartments, recreation facilities and retail spaces, 432 Park Ave will be the tallest tower measured to the roof top (second tallest next to the One World Trade Center with its spire) in the New York City. Initial design was layers of houses in the sky, and in the later stage the “layer” formal quality subdued, but came around as evolved overall concept where the layers gained their contrast and defining “joints” by mechanical drum floors. The project is achievement of structural challenges and solutions, for its proportion which is being very tall at small footprint, which called for structural facade. With the unobstructed primal form and controlled visual strikes, it achieves iconic physical presence through its striking proportion within the fabric of New York skyline.

The Beukenhof auditorium and crematorium as envisioned by Asymptote is an architectural work that provides the city of Schiedam and its neighboring areas not only with a much needed new and modern facility but also with a new cultural building to be inserted into the city’s urban fabric and lush environs. The fluid and pristine nature of the building’s envelope merges the exterior architectural form with the natural surroundings. The architecture is experienced in harmony with the elegant tree-lined canals and the serene landscape that sit alongside the building. The meandering form of the sculptural exterior is reflected within as smooth surfaces that delineate spaces of movement and worship. A delicate pattern of apertures in the roof creates interiors bathed in diffused and modulated light. The various sounds and the play of light produced by water flowing along the building surfaces and collecting in adjacent pools imbues the building with a powerful but serene atmosphere. These elements complement the physical form of the building and create a meaningful and unique addition to the architecture of Schiedam.

2.13 MATERIAL ASSEMBLY: INTERIOR

Taking a comprehensive view at the inventory of space available and the potential footprint for newconstruction on the historic campus, the decision was made to consider building over the FDR Drive,in accordance with the entitlements obtained by the University from the City in 1973.

The proposal to build over the FDR Drive addresses the need for a phased implementation,eventually integrating all academic and research facilities in state-of-the-art buildings. The firststage would be a new building, consisting of two laboratory floors, that covers the FDR Drive fromthe southern edge of the Hospital to the southern end of the President’s House. The design ofthis low structure is intended to preserve the river views from the existing buildings, as well asto provide connections to the historic campus buildings. A garden would be created on the roofof the new building to continue the sequence of north-south oriented outdoor spaces that oneexperiences walking across campus from west to east. Two pavilion-like structures housing thecafeteria and administrative offices would be set in the open space, allowing for outdoor spaces foreating, recreation, and contemplation. An amphitheater placed at the center of this space wouldacknowledge the central location of Welch Hall on the historic campus.

The great long-term benefit to this proposal is that it would leave the south end of campuscompletely unencumbered, providing a large area that could be re-imagined or redevelopedas needed in the future. The large amount of space available for development in this locationcould easily accommodate 1.5 million square feet or more of laboratory, housing, or mixed-useconstruction.

This approach ensures the integration of the scientific space of the University into a flexiblestructure capable of absorbing a potential future growth up to 100 laboratories. At the same time,it ensures the preservation of all the buildings and the gardens of the historic campus, which wouldbe re-purposed for other functions compatible with the mission of the institution.

The use of landscape features, continuity of materials and the transparency of the façade reinforce the links between inside and outside and the overall cohesion of the school with the site.This connectivity helps to promote the school as an institution that is embedded in the life of the city and lives of its citizens. Although the architecture is strikingly visible from multiple viewpoints, the school establishes a significant pres-ence in the visual landscape of the city and region, while also promoting permeability and accessibility. The project’s connection to the ground level between the school and the site produces an atmosphere of openness and accessibility both physically and symbolically.From inside, the outside world is observed, reflected and learned. The outside world inspires and integrated into the experience, as the high school becomes both object and subject.

For the project, I researched on the materials and methods for the �nal physical model. I also worked on coordination and calculation of program and required footages. I made 3d site model, and made various study models by translating the developing geometry inbetween maya and rhino.
