greg di rienzoARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

The content of this portfolio is based upon my observations as a student of architecture. It is because of the cognizance of the built, and unbuilt environment that this collection of works exists. By noting these observations, and realizing certain potential of sites and buildings, goals are accomplished and projects are developed to their fullest. I do the majority of my observations by devoting an enormous amount of time into sketching to develop process work.

URBAN RE JUVENATION

01

01

The concept of my design is to have minimal intervention to the existing power-plant by creating a parasitic growth that enables public exhibition space in the large interior space and an outdoor piazza; a motif ever-present in Italian city planning. The primary design element is the usage of a perforated metal screen that mimics the biological elements of the surrounding vegetation to allow for unque lighting conditions throughout all while providing privacy to the admin-istrative offices of the city of Florence.

URBAN RE JUVENATIONStudying for a semester in Florence, Italy was an eye opening experience, especially to how the native Florentines lived, worked and socialized with each other and their community. The goal of this urban rejuvenation project was to re-purpose a vacant power plant into a civic center for the community.

KODA FOOD CO-OP

Food is a powerful social and cultural force. As a cultural force, food cross-es socio-economic barriers; it has the potemtial to affect positive social change. The production and preparation of good food is not only a sound basis for economic activity, but it can also be a source of right livelihood

This project is in the development phase- a feasibility study/business plan is being prepared by the Greater Cincinnati Food Hub Working Group. This group is the client. The basic idea is to establish a new union worker-owned co-operative busi-ness in Cincinnati. The idea behind this Hub is simple: support and promote regional and sustainable agriculture, advocate for good and better food, provide good jobs, and thereby improve the quality of life in Cincinnati. and the surrounding.

NATURE OBSERVATORY

NATURE OBSERVATORY

03

Nature is one of the biggest inspirations behind design. This nature obser-vatory is designed with as little impact to nature as possible, all while taking full advantage of the views and interactions with the landscape.

This project is designed with human viewers in mind. It gives people different perspectives of the un-built environment from three different levels, and 360 degrees of vision. The design features very simple, and humble materials that do not distract, or detract from the intentions of the structure

This proposal for a nature observatory is meant to tread lightly on any site, thus giving it the possibility to be placed in a number of locations.

THE ACADEMY, THE ARTS, + THE LANDSCAPE

04

Thie design of the arts center focuses around the humble presence on the site and subtle intervention of the actual built environment. Seperation of the living quarters for the artists, and their working studios was key to involving the community in the function of the art center. The Landscape is an element that reaches into the site and expands out beyond it. Site elements are in direct correspondence with the built environ-ment and are dictated by the allowance of major areas to return to the untouched, natural landscape.

THE ACADEMY, THE ARTS, + THE LANDSCAPE The Academy, the Arts, and the Landscape is a project driven by four artists in residence, their connection to their work, connec-tion to to the gallery space, and their relationship to the land-scape.
