Birmingham City University
Creating a set of new brand guidelines to enhance the identity, value and profit of the institution and to apply this to a set of new prospectuses.

Live branding project, Birmingham City University, 2009
181: BIAD Visual Communication Graduate Show brand
Based on the theatrical theme of cabaret and with a central focus on a glitzy awards ceremony, 181 is a representative brand of Visual Communication at BIAD. The brand focused around the awards ceremony: Design applications included foil blocked invites, promotional DVD packaging and interactive menu design, engraved trophies, crew t-shirts, event signage, internal student to student communication and the 181show.com website.
This project was an excellent opportunity to create a live brand from conception to production, using a real budget, representing real people.
Live installation at the ‘Kino’ venue, Flat Pack Festival, Birmingham, 2009
Interactive Screen installation: Flat Pack Festival
Working collaboratively in a creative team of three, we worked with LUCID and Screen Media lab to develop an interactive installation to generate visual feed-back for the festival. Visitors were able to upload comments and images to the screen whilst being part of the Birmingham landscape.
Earth Poster : Plus Typography Exhibition
This one -off typeface is made from a series of lino prints. The organic typeface takes on the voice of the Earth and carries the message of treating our planet with more respect - developed to encourage thought and convey opinion.
All Day Performances: The Windmill Theatre
Referencing the famous Windmill Theatre, this poster was a winning ‘cabaret’ themed entry for the 181 Visual Communication ‘Trevor’ Awards.
Exhibited at Plus Design Festival, Birmingham, 2007
Baskerville: The Animated Film, 2008
The Baskerville project aims to preserve and celebrate the work of John Baskerville. As part of the large collaberative group, our team created, filmed and edited scene 5 of The Baskerville Film. Our scene told the story of Birmingham innovations and the successes of the legendary Baskerville through a magical type drawer. We also designed posters and postcards to promote the film and encourage participation.
Premiered at Hello Digital Festival and Plus, Birmingham, 2008
Noise Funk: A celebration of Paula Scher
With a strong reference to the Public Theatre in New York, Scher’s type approach is celebrated through the mediums of music and dance. The type style is rhythmic, fast, highly expressive and affected by the surrounding environment. From conception to film to animation, the type becomes the centre of the piece.
A collaborative project exploring the characteristics of typography, 2008
Era : Rebranding the Green Awards
The current identity for the Green Awards needed to move forward and focus more on the responsible approach to design. The new logo references the phyllotaxis - the scientific structure of growth and also relates to tribal signs from aboriginal art. The identity is alot more sophisticated and gives respect to the causes, creating a more desirable platform for designers to be recognised on. ‘Era’ stands for Environmentally Responsible Artists.
Design applications include a new brand proposal, an original developed version of Futura as a brand typeface, an online portal to exhibit work and a design annual template.
