L. D. Davis Offices, The Fairway, Abington | 2008An addition and renovations to a historic former bank buildingThe south facing addition is angled to follow the curve of The Fairway and to fall within the building setback requirement. The southern exposure provided ideal conditions for passive solar heating and daylighting. Window areas are maximized for winter solar heat gain, daylighting, and views, while the overhanging trellis with its climbing plants shades the glass from summer sun. Interior office partitions are glazed above a height of 30”, bringing daylight into the interior spaces. Existing interior partitions and finishes were retained, and were enhanced with new interior construction that maintains the craftsmanship of the original. The addition features a white roof with a solar reflectance of 84%. To limit the impact of excavation and site disturbance, a ‘frost-protected shallow foundation' was specified. By removing an existing concrete paved terrace, and replacing it with the addition and new planted areas, the overall site impervious cover was reduced, increasing on-site infiltration and helping to manage stormwater runoff.

Adler Institute for Advanced Imaging PET/CT Offices | 2005An office for medical imaging services located in an existing office building. The challenges of a tight program in a constrained space and accommodating the engineering requirements of high tech equipment in an existing 1950's office building were met in this project. The clients were particularly concerned to take particular care to create a welcoming and respectful environment designed to put patients at ease.

Little Abington Meetinghouse Restoration & New OutbuildingRestoration of a historic Friends Meetinghouse and a new outbuilding. The Little Abington Meetinghouse, established in 1836 and abandoned in the 1970's, had fallen into disrepair when the Abington Art Center created a committee to work towards its revitalization. Paul Macht Architects provided pro bono architectural services, and volunteers came together to complete the work. Winning awards from the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia and the Arts and Business Council of Greater Philadelphia, the project provides new space for arts activities and community meetings. Many recycled and repurposed materials were used, including an existing stone wall, siding milled from fallen trees at Penn State Abington, doors and hardware.

Kitchen Living/Dining Area

Price Residence | 2007A new house in Princeton, NJ

Traditional forms are married with contemporary building systems in this new home set in an established neighborhood of Princeton. Built on the footprint of the site’s existing house to satisfy the borough’s zoning requirements, the new home creates living spaces that are connected to the private rear yard. The pantry, powder room, and laundry were placed on the street side of the home to shield the dining room, kitchen, and living room from traffic noise. In winter months, these public areas are bathed in sunlight streaming through large south facing windows looking out to the rear yard. The interior features radiant heat under slate tiles and hickory flooring, exposed glulam beams and a natural stone fireplace that is a focal point for the main living area.

Koppelman Residence Addition & Renovations|2010A game room, mudroom, and bath addition to a Victorian house. The owner sought a healthy, energy efficient, and sustainable home, yet wanted to maintain the charm and warmth of the original Victorian style. The first floor addition provides space for a teenager’s game room, a bathroom and mudroom, while keeping the space flexible enough for conversion into a first floor master bedroom suite in the future. The addition combines Victorian design elements from the

existing house with up-to-date levels of insulation, Energy Star windows, geothermal heat and thin film solar collectors for electricity generation. The southern exposure provided ideal conditions for solar collectors, but the client was sensitive to the neighbors’ views in this close-knit community, hence the decision to use a standing seam metal roof with thin-film laminate solar collectors for their low profile. Stone from the site was recycled for use on the addition’s exterior, reclaimed oak was selected for flooring, and the client’s doorknob collection was put to use as hardware for the interior doors. The addition’s insulation is a dual system of soy-based spray foam for airtight sealing and EcoBatt fiberglass batts made from sand and recycled glass. The new bathroom features low flow fixtures and a dual-flush toilet. Peggy Hoffart

Worldly Goods Exhibition, Philadelphia Museum of Art | 2000An exhibition of the arts of early Pennsylvania, 1680-1785

The gallery installation adapted the design of an 18th century paneled dining room wall to fit the size and proportions of the display space. I worked with the curator of American Decorative Arts at the Museum and with a plaster artisan who created and installed the moldings. The paneled wall served as an example of early Pennsylvania woodworking (although duplicated in plaster) and a backdrop for the display of art and artifacts.
