RENOVATON OF THE CENTRE OF BOGOTA, MASTER PLAN AND SOCIAL HOUSINGBOGOTA/ COLOMBIA

In the middle of the 40s, downtown Bogotá started a process of sinking, the heart of the capital was being abandoned. The city was growing wildly, and population was changing and reconsidering their needs, their spaces and way of life.

However, in the last few decades a strong movement led by architects, artists, critics, engineers and economists has been reconsidering the city and citizen’s ideal and the collective imaginary.

Based on this reality and what is happening currently, this thesis expounds how architecture can help to bring back the population left years ago by being understood as synonimous with democracy.

MASTER PLAN / DOWNTOWN BOGOTA

The plot is located in the centre of Bogotá, which is the gateway for poeple who come from the mountains in the east, and has the virtue to act as a stage where city and mountains are constantly playing and recreating new landscapes. Furthermore it is currently arounded by more than 10 Educative Institutions.

Mainly, the Master Plan – which occupies an area of 10.7hec – consists of an avenue which starts and finishes in the main Educative Institutions in the sector but crossing through the triangular plot and connecting all those places abandoned. The aim is to create community whit public space as avenues, parks, squares and equipments where children could play, and people could meet up and relax.

SOCIAL HOUSING

Social Housing Complex terraced, -low- rise, high density, provides as much diversity and independence as possible. It allow us to receive all kind of occupants, each of them with their own needs. Traditional families, couples, singles and eventually students for whom the project would bring benefits will live in a mixed city

VERTICAL CITY

Vertical city attempts to criticise the conventional thinking about the way architecture has interpreted

the growing of cities during the last centruies. Instead of expanding its boundaries horizontally;

vertical city points out the importance of a densification process in times when population is

increasing.

REINTERPRETATION OF THE TRADITIONAL URBAN GRID

VERTICAL CITY

This theorical excersise proposes a block which is periodicaly interrupted by holes all across the volume. It creates a facade which is in constant action, for instance, remind ing us the diverse cicle that cities goes through in time. Besides, it generates alternatives uses and quite interesting spacialities with green gardens on the top

CAYUNDA HOUSING COMPETITIONLA CALERA/ COLOMBIA

How should a house interact with nature and lanscape? Both, house and landscape participate not simply as individula l entities but rather as one whole element . The roof was also reinterpretated so it could offer not just wrather protection but also a green habitable roof as extension of the surroundings of the 3 houses.

After having participated with several private fims our three prototypes were selected to be built in the outskirts of Bogota. The development and construction process may start next year.

This is a development project that advocates the recovery and transformation of public space in situations that it has been violated. The privatization of the public realm by means of imposition of walls and fences in the city will be studied in this specific case

The deregulation and liberalization of financial, labour and real state markets promoted on behalf of ‘individual freedom’ has created the illusion that with this measures, the free circulation of the entire population will be possible. It is not a paradox that nowadays policies, walls and fences create physical barriers to exclude: Borders extending in between countries and cities.

The wall is an altruistic policy, symbol of hierarchy and domination. We allow infinity of borders from 5 to 6m height and hundreds of kilometers along to be built up, the Great Wall of China is constantly multiplied. Shameless we replicate the Wall of Shame in the Middle East. There is no Banksy able to resound Israel´s border. The Berlin wall seems now short to us, and even though Arizona’s immigration law has recently been approved it has not being able to stop the impetus of the people who remain searching for the “American dream” in a daily basis.

 1. According to the legal document, there is no obligation that the parking space is located in the surface (a semi basement could be considered)2. Why is a fence built there if it is NOT ALLOWED?3. Why do they rent a portion of it to different institutions?  

 Over 30 years ago, the shopping centre Los Tres Elefantes was given a concession from the District of Bogota that allowed them to occupy a public plot as parking for themselves but also for the inhabitants around. By means of an Administrative Act of the year 1978, Resolution 64, 392 parking lots were approved, without any fence and charge

There are1608 registered parking businesses in Bogotá, half of these could be transformed into public space (aprox. number of outdoor parkings). 24 Ha. of public space would be recovered and gained (25% of the total area of London’s Hyde Park).

VILLANUEVA HOSPITAL CENTREGUATEMALA CITY/ GUATEMALA

The project is located in Villanueva, which is 14 km from Guatemala city. With a particular topography, more than 13 volcanos in its surroundings, and part of a rich culture and civilization the porjects firstly suggests a different view of development of the outskirts.

Learning from the urban process Guatemala has being through during the last decades, we understand Villanueva has the potential even though urbanistically is a result of lack of urban poilicies. Thus, what if we plan the city growing process, by providing a rural, green, horizontal and sustainable.
