LOBKE VRANCKAERTS SELECTED PROJECTS
5FOREWORD
I recently graduated as an architect from the Luca School of Arts, Faculty of the Ku Leuven. During my studies I developed a versatile background within architecture, urban planning and social urbanism. I developed a particular enthusiasm for architecture occurring within different conditions, linked to a fragile narrative and sensitive social understanding. With my theoretical thesis and final project entitled ‘Re-constructing urban synergy’, based on urban scenarios with architectural interventions, I intend to unite neighborhoods and cultures by injectingexisting infrastructure with a communal program. Thanks to my education at Luca, combined with an international master and exchange program inChile, I developed a diversified list of debate and architectural reflection in our society. At the same time it increased the variety of my skills in the fields of technical drawings, graphical documents, fysical models and conceptual understanding. I consider myself as a self-motivating, enthusiastic team player that adapts easily and is eager to learn. It would be very motivating to engage myself with different challenges in a professional environment. Currently I am looking for an internship within the field of architecture.

The aim of this urban strategy is to solve the lack of coherency in the urban network of Oslo. It is linking the existing city with the waterfront developments. A second important goal is to create an approachablefjord city waterfront for all users. This by following three principles: landscape, structure and democrazy.
Following this strategy the new ‘fjord byplannen’ is guiding traffic into tunnels so the connection from the inner-city to the waterfront is created by re-using and implementing functions on two existing bridges.
The main bridge becomes a prolongation of the‘Akkerselva’, a green/blue lung running through Oslo. The second bridge is connecting different cultures and providing a secondary access to the rail network. Together with the future plans for the central stationof Oslo and the existing bus station they are providingnew interwoven landscapes.

This participatory research project took place in the outskirts of Santiago. We worked closely togetherwith ‘Techo’, a organization striving for better living conditions in social housing projects. Our task was to observe the living standard and social interactionswithin these blocks. At first we researched several units, without considering the entire complex.
A second action was to take a step back and to make an effort to understand the complexity of the system.Observing the entity the importance of outdoor space became more clear, even more notable was how inhabitants where using and claiming this space. There was a clear lack of boundaries and obligations. We strove to act as mediator by creating a transition between private and public space.

The project revolved about the public North-South junction of Brussels. How can minor train stations reconnect and take part of a larger network. More specific was dealing with the Schuman station and the parallel office focused ‘Pachecolaan’. We suggested three different scenario’s: Attraction, Green education and Layering urban space.
’Attraction’ proposes a football stadium where public transport becomes more prominent. In ‘Green education’we would use the difference in topography as an advantage to create an urban research environmentsolving problems like water inundation. The last scenariois ‘Layering urban space’ where we propose to reducethe presence of the boulevard. This by introducinghousing to create a more efficient use of the site.

This project is about the conversion of a 30.000m2 office building. Re-design functions and uses without demolishing more as 30% of the original structure. The building is located on the residential edge of the city and the more vibrant culturalcore. Public functions are introduced on the ground floor while different types of housing are located on the top floors.
The massive building block is interrupted by alleys that createthe opportunity for passage and a fair amount of daylight. The original facade is sustained but a second more open exterior is constructed to compose terraces. Facilities are accessible from a gallery on the street side while the entrancesto the housing units are situated on the inner court yard.

Faced with the shortage of proper planning and social systems this project suggest a model of co-housing. The continuous shell offers protection from the specificclimate condition. The shell is open from the side to allow views to the landscape.
The ground floor is flexible towards expansion and offers space for important commercial activities linked to the family house. Materials are basic with a wooden structure and zinc covering the shell, reflecting the environment. The interior walls facing the communal space consist out of polycarbonate creating interaction and transparency.

Creating a beneficial environment where the multidisciplinary artcenter ‘Netwerk’ has the opportunity to engage into a closer collaborations with these artists. The ground flooroffers the possibility to have one open workspace, daylight entering from the steel roof construction.Small-scale habitation is accommodated in units hangingfrom the steel truss construction.

6x60=360+360=720x1,4=1008m2 Housing sixty refugees on a minimum surface. Living in a community, live to shelter. Starting from a single cell, designing a universal unit. Repeating the concept into a supporting system. The front facade of on unit exists out of two layer, a closed wooden faced and a transparent part. By opening the first layer individus can choose to take part in public space. Canopy’s are situated between units what makes it possible to create small shielded atmospheres.

This vertical museum has been a group effort. The floors are including exhibition spaces, a café, an outdoor theatreand a library. My input has been the technical know-howand structural execution. It has been a challenge due to rotating floors and alternating climate conditions.
The structural principle exists out of a steel core in combination with bubbledeck technology. It allows us toconsider the entire floor as one single beam carrying in2 directions. The long spans and the use of the same materials accentuate the perceived dimension of thefloors and frame the view towards the city.
