LAMP STAND DESIGN

About This Lamp

For this conceptual approach assignment, I want to create a standing lamp (1 metre tall) for the public area which combines with wood and a non-flammable/fire retardant fabric. The lamp should be fire/ flame retardant because this lamp will have a small candle which sits in the centre; about the structure of this lamp, the fabric will be wrapped around in a round shape, there will be some beams standing to support the whole structure of the lamp. Teak wood will be an ideal support of this because it’s hard and durable; we can use a fire retardant spray on coating for the Teak wood for its finish.

Fibre That I Consider

SPECTRA

High flex strengthGood UV resistanceVery high initial modulus numbersSuperior breaking strengthSusceptible to creep

KERMEL

Non-flammabilityThermal insulationResistance to chemicalsPermanent colourMechanical strength

INDURA

Indura is flame resistance for the life of the garmentIt is also resistant to UV degradationA protection against flash fire and molten metal splash exposure

I would choose Kermel as the material for this lamp because Kermel is a naturally non-flammable fibre. It’s a smooth-surfaced fibre with an almost circular cross-section which makes it comfortable for touch. Kermel is also high resistance to abrasion, a thermal conductivity twice as low as any other aramid fibre. It also has a good resistance to the chemicals. Kermel aramid fibre is solution-dyed during the manufacturing process for lifelong colourfastness. Colour of non-flammable Kermel fibres can withstand UV lights and washing. In addition, non-flammable Kermel can also withstand high temperature in the long run (several years), whereas fire resistant Kermel fibre can resist extreme high temperatures (up to 1,000°C) during a few seconds. Nowadays, Kermel is used in Military and public order; Filtration; Industrial protective clothing and Firefighter apparel. The end use of Kermel, it could be used for FR Middlewear; Station Gear; Coveralls or Shirts and Pants.

Fabric Construction

Kermel fibre is a polyamide-imide, classified in the meta-aramid family. It is naturally non- flammable, which is a permanent characteristic because to its chemical structure including a high proportion of aromatic structures and combined double bonds. For this design of the lamp, the Kermel fabric will be done by woven, the reason I want it to be woven is because using the technique of woven, you can weave different patterns to it. For this lamp, I will choose a simple woven pattern, because I want to create a simple and warm feeling to the design.

Potential Finishing ApplicationThe potential finish of this lamp will be Water Repellent Finishes. The reason that I chose this type of finish is because this lamp will be use in a public/outdoor area. During the day, there is a possibility to rain, so Kermel needs to resistant to water. This Water Repellent finish technique is a coating added to fabrics to make them water-resistant. As the DWR wears off ever time, re-treatment is necessary.

My inspiration of this coffee table is to imitate the simplicity and to emphasis on the minimalistic. This organic shape makes a simple curve and also has a shiny smooth texture. It is made from Plywood and MDF with the glossy white colour finish. This minimalistic furniture does come in the way of functionality. The table is able to support a person’s weight so the user can sit on the table as a bench; the bottom part of the table has a space to store any books and magazines. With the beautiful aesthetics and elegant appearance, this coffee table can be also use as a decoration in the house or in a public space.

Rapid urbanization has led to a rise in high-density studio and small apartment living. Accord-ing to an analysis by BIS Shrap-nel,thepopulationprofileofoc-cupants in inner city Melbourne can be divided into three major categories, students, young pro-fessionals and ‘empty-nesters’. Through my own observational study I discovered that many of the people who are attracted to apartment living, especially stu-dents and young people, often live in shared accommodation; but a consequence of this can be a lack of living and storage space.

Tanhasbeendesignedtoprovideaflex-ible environment for living and entertaining as well as additional space for storage. Inspired by the seven pieces and three shapes of the Tangram puzzle which allows the player endless possibilities for abstract formations or shapes resembling real life creatures and objects, the multiple units of Tan can be arranged in a multiplicity of ways, together and apart. With a focus on ‘simplicity and functionality’ the design turns furniture into a game providing new ways for living and additional space for storage. Tan is easy to move around the apartment and convenient to shift when moving to a new apartment. It is the ideal furniture design for high-density living.
