Content precedes design. Design in the absence of content is not design, its decoration.

  • Our 2020Exhibition Design | 2012

Our 2020: The Greenest City In The World is a concept exhibition

for Emily Carr University of Art + Designs Concourse Gallery.

Our task was to design and make a 25 to 1 ratio exhibition out

of foam core with hand made scaled objects and posters and

relate it to an aspect of sustainability. We decided to focus

on Vancouvers 2020 Action Plan by highlighting some of the

companies we believed were at the forefront of Vancouvers

movement towards becoming the greenest city in the world by

    the year 2020.

LOCAL FOODWe have a 2020 target to increase city and neighborhood food assets by a minimum of 50 per cent over 2010 levels. This means increasing all residents access to food that is local and grown and harvested fairly.

    9

CLEAN AIRWhile Vancouver already enjoys relatively good air quality, our long- term goal is to have the cleanest air of any major city in the world. Our proposed 2020 target is to meet the most stringent of British Columbian, Canadian and international air quality standards and guidelines.

    8

    CLEAN WATER

For Vancouverites to enjoy the best drinking water of any major city by 2020 we aim to always meet the strongest of British Columbian, Canadian, and international drinking water quality standards and guidelines. We are also developing a target for water conservation.

Each component of the website allows the public to learn more

information about the gallery and what Vancouver is doing to

    promote change in the city.

These cards represent six popular typefaces: Bodoni, Futura,

Meta, Centaur, Helvetica and Gill Sans. They showcase the

distinct characteristics of each typeface, their origin, and the

typographer who created them. They took inspiration from old

atlas maps and depict the origins of the typeface.

HistoryEric Gill designed this Humanist typeface in 1928. Its design owes something to the letters designed by Edward Johnston for the Underground Railways in 1918; although similar to Johnstons sans serif, Gill Sans is more refined and distinctive. It is seen today as a quintessential British typeface and is known for its legibility.

Although this typeface is very geometric it includes humanist properties such as the double storey a and g. It is a very clean typeface that is highly legible at both large and small sizes. Some Characteristics are the square influence of the M, the calligraphic style on the italic p, the oblique terminus of the vertical stroke of the t, and how the small a becomes single story when italicized.

HistoryBodoni is a Modern typeface, designed in 1798 by one of the most prolific type designers of all time, Giambattista Bodoni. He was meticulous in the design and print quality of his publications and produced under the patronage of the Duke of Parma. Although most designers dedicate their lives to creating several typefaces, Bodoni spend his entire life refining and expanding the range of his single typeface.

Bodonis serifs are both flat and unbracketed and the font is recognized for its modern style that consisted of a vertical stress and thin hairlines. Bodoni believed in plenty of white space and therefore descenders are long. Some of its other characteristics are its upped top serifs on b,h,l, top & bottom serifs on C, vertical tail of Q, small upper bowl of g and large ball terminal of c.

HistoryDesigned by Paul Renner between 1924-1926, Futura was commercially released soon after the type foundry Bauer commissioned it in 1927. Futura is one of the most popular German sans ever created. While designing Futura, Renner avoided creating any non-essential elements, making use of basic geometric proportions with no serifs or frills.

Futuras crisp, clean form reflects the appearance of efficiency and forwardness. Every letter, lowercase or uppercase, seems to have geometric form. This is evident especially in the squares, triangles, and the almost perfectcircles. Every stem is a rectangle or a straight line and ascenders move past the cap height.

HistoryDesigned by Bruce Rogers in 1914 as a titling fount for the Metropolitan Museum of New York. Rogers believed that the design of the typeface was of historic importance because it exemplified an original design of rare cultivation and grace. It was accepted as one of the great type designs and welcomed by designers and printers for many of their best books.

Centaurs calligraphic style separates itself from many other widely used typefaces. Some of Centaurs characteristics include: tail of J descends below baseline and points down, ball of 9 doesnt close, diagonal crossbar on e, serifs on center bar of E, upper serifs of M are single-sided pointing out, and its distinctive parens with unmodulated strokes.

HistoryIn 1984, the German State Post Office, the Bundepost, commissioned Erik Spiekermann of Meta Design to create a new, exclusive font for use on all of the Bundeposts printed material. The production was cancelled soon after. However the font was reintroduced in 1989 and is know known as Meta.

There are many fonts that are inspired by Helvetica, Meta is a typeface that attempts to move beyond it. The typeface has a large x height and is easy to read in small sizes, The font shows some unique characteristics like its slanted cut marks, its swashlike tail on the Q, the oversized dot on the j and the unattached arms on the y.

HistoryIt was conceived by Edouard Hoffman and drawn by Max Miedinger in 1957 at the Haas foundry in Munchenstein, Switzerland. Originally called Neue Haas Grotesk, its design was based on Schelter-Grotesk and Haas Normal Grotesk; in 1960 it was revised and renamed Helvetica (Latin for Swiss) and introduced to the US.

Some of the types characteristics are the lower case a with its curved spur and teardrop shaped bowl, its tail of the Q is oblique, it has a squared dot over the i and the strokes are typically cut either horizontally or vertically. Its large x-height gives the letterforms an increased volume, allowing for better legibility. The Helvetica type family is one of the largest, offering the designer a wide choice of type styles.

  • Longonot EducationLogo Design | 2012

After coming home from my trip to Nairobi, Kenya I was inspired

to further my support. I created this logo for the not-for-profit

organization, Longonot Education, based out of Minneapolis,

USA . The organization raises funds to help support and develop

sustainable education opportunities for children in Kenya. The

logo was inspired by the trees of Masai Mara, and the orange

color and the breaks in the tree reflect the sun rising on the rifts

    of the mountains.

  • Vancouver Futbol AcademyLogo Design | 2012

The following is a logo design for Vancouvers top futsal league:

Vancouver Futbol Academy. The logo held inspiration from the

fast pace of Futsal as a sport, and the bounding box mimics the

particular nets that are used in futsal.

  • Helvetica Poster DesignPoster Design | 2011

We were challenged with the task of capturing the essence of

Gary Hustwits movie Helvetica and designing a bus shelter

poster based on our target audience and location. For my poster

I chose to use the quote Everywhere you look you see typefaces.

But theres only one that you probably see more than any other

one and thats Helvetica. This quote by Michael Bierut inspired

the rest of the design process. I decided to use a grid map of

where my poster was going to be located (Robson and Granville

street) and with the cast members scattered throughout the

streets, I wanted to depict the movement of the city, and allow

for my audience to scan the map for familiar areas.

  • I used a grid map of where my bus stop was located which allowed

my audience to interact with their surroundings; this allowed

them to notice the effects of the typeface throughout the city.

Life Cereal Package DesignPackaging Design | 2012

This project challenged me to examine the packaging design

of a popular, non-organic, breakfast cereal. I was tasked with

analyzing the graphic vocabulary across the six surfaces of a

cereal package and how the form and content communicated

with what was inside the box. We also had to make the boxes

bilingual with both English and French. My vision was to make

Life Cereal more marketable to young adults and families. I also

redesigned the Canadian Nutritional Food Label to help give the

consumer a more clear and communicative way to understand

what the product contained. I designed a series of three boxes

that focused on whole grains, zero cholesterol and multrigrains.

  • A Datebook is more than just organization and planning, it is

an external information organ; a place where everyday thoughts

and feelings are written down; an outlet for your own personal

expression; a brain made out of paper instead of cells. Connexion

helps bring this form of expression inside the classroom by

empowering a new generation to Ask, Connect and Discover. It

allows students to express themselves anonymously by writing

a message in the form of a question or idea and submitting it

into Connexion. Discussed in a focused manner, teachers read

these submissions out loud and take the opportunity to let

students work as a group to tackle some of the questions and

    ideas expressed by their peers.

The infographic shows the products influence, concept and application.

Connexions handle allows students to interact as they slide the piece to open the designated question and idea slot. The spacing between the designated Question and Idea slots have been built to allow students 10-13 years of age to drop their submissions more easily.

    2) Collection

The plexi glass case box is a collection of the students thoughts, questions and ideas. The box, placed on grooves inside Connexion, allows for easy removal and access to the submissions for teachers.

Subject cards help direct students toward topics that will be part of upcoming curriculum and/or about current homework. By supplying the students a particular subject, it gives them a starting point for their submissions and allows teachers to choose particular subjects they believe will benefit the classroom that follow required areas of study.

The cerebral cortex is the folded tissue that covers the surface of the cerebrum. It is the most highly developed part of the human brain and is responsible for thinking, perceiving, language, imagining, planning and expression; it determines our personality. Almost everything we do consciously depends on the cortex. Connexion uses the influences of the cerebral cortex to help drive the concept of using ideas and questions as a form of expression inside the classroom.
