A REDEVELOPMENT STRATEGY FOR MIRRER CHAR

Mirrer Char is an accreted tract of land located on the south-ern bank of the Buriganga River, directly south of Dhaka’s old city center. The site is challenged by a burgeoning pop-ulation to the north, scarcity of land, lack of infrastructure and the exposure to deadly pollution. A better future rests in creating healthy, prosperous and sustainable communities that cohabit with neighboring rural agricultural and urban communities.

The proposal calls for the expansion of Dhaka’s existing canal systems to strengthen the connection between the increasingly marginalized agricultural lands to urban cen-ters. Linking farmlands to clean water and transportation networks with a revitalized canal system, will improve their ability to participate in Dhaka’s globalized economy.

SITE STRATEGY

THE PROSCENIUM

TROUPE RESIDENT ROUTEVISITOR ROUTE

6 Years old with 10 fingers and 10 toesSo much to see, so much to do, so much to explore. The Paramount! I’d like to climb or at least catch a ghost in.Maybe I’ll ride my bike around the block again and have a look; really really fast before the sun goes down.Pretty ladies and handsome men, all dressed up for the moviesRight behind those old thug clothes and that dirty window. The cracked pavement below methat suddenly turns into bricksAlong that dark little alley, bumpythat’s only big enough for one of those old carriages.I could live there! I think.Just like that woman on the cornerOr like that guy on the street.

SURFACE-FORMThe formal purity of the cup lends itself to certain geom-etries. This project set out to harness the geometric proper-ties and inherent spatial qualities of the cup to create new surfaces and spaces by implementing assembly logics. Examined were the individual part, part to part and part to whole relationships, as well as the unified surface-form generated. The resulting surface-form exhibits a degree of porosity that the original component lacks. The pure cup has a sense of stillness due to its function of containment. The formal attributes of the project exhibit a sense of “con-tainmnet” while simultaeneously creating a sense of move-ment. This is exemplified through the duality of smooth and “teeth-like” texture and positive and negative spaces. The unfolding and refolding of the pure form resulted in a under-standing of the transformative nature of the cup component.

INFLUENCEThis proposal for a 24HR Arts Centre in the Northern Lib-erties, Philadelphia is generated from an understanding of existing programs, proximity and site conditions as forces that influence architecture and it’s relationship to a neigh-borhood.

The reinterpreted map of Old Kensignton, Philadelphia, measures population density and the intensity of interaction in public and private zones throughout the site through the instrumentatlization of a dynamic and responsive gradient field. Increasing vector magnitude suggests an increased level in interaction while the density of the grid directly rep-resents the relative population density in a particular area.

The vector field facilitates a visualization of ‘forces’ on the site extracted from a network of schools and their proxim-ity to growth centers such as playgrounds, libraries and art centers. This rendition of an urban, current diagram exam-ines the ways in which the disparate, surrounding neighbor-hoods in this area overlap, yield and respond to the existing infrastructure made up of these institutions.

SLOW SPACESlowness as Infrastructure. This is a system that engages scale, light, texture, sound, which activates the space of notdoing, recognizing that richer experiences and environ-ments can emerge from the dynamic interaction of these phenomena. ‘Doing’ suggests an active engagement in an activity while ‘not doing’ suggest the times within each ac-tivity when the user is disengaged or passively engaged. Each event in the building has moments of doing and not doing. It is also through the programmatic activation of the space of notdoing that one can experience slowness in a novel way that promotes social and spatial interactivity.

The space of ‘not doing,’ of unexpected collisions and so-cial interaction, emerges as the main event by comprising 70% of the building volume.

PAVILION FOR THE LONDON CULTURAL OLYMPIADThis permanent pavillion for the 2012 London Cultural Olympiad, is designed as a dynamic environment that serves as a refuge during the busy months of the summer olympics. A green ecology, the connects people with the river, the Underground and the Skyway, sprouts from a bold incision in the flat landscape of the Greenwich penninsula.
