A year long study in the city of Montgomery and solutions for how to improve the culture of the city. At the beginning of the year each student was asked to choose a building in downtown Montgomery and to render the front facade, including blemishes. Once this was finished, the student was asked to redesign the facade and render it. This project became the catalyst for the rest of the year. Beginning withthe facade redesign, I choose to focus on the concept of publicspace in Montgomery and how to improve the quality of public life within the urban core of the city.

URBAN REDESIGN

Groups of three were formed in order to choose a location in Montgomery that needed the most improvement. Our group choose the two blocks across from the Biscuts Baseball Stadium. This area is close to several attractions within the city and has the potential to draw people into the city. We made a general urban plan that focused on movement through the two sites and ample space for the people of the city.

Within our group, each of us picked a building from our urban plan to design. I choose one of the front buildings that would act as a entry into our newly designed blocks as well as interact directly with the piazza at the 5 points intersection. I focused on the building and public space enhancing one another. By doing this, they would provide a place that all residents of Montgomery would use, not only during office hours but all the time.

Bishopsfield Aimee Meeker & Clay Jackson
To familiarize ourselves with social housing, case studies we assigned as a group project. Bishopsfield in Harlow, England focuses on a sense of privacy and green space for every resident. My part of the project was to study the apartment (or linear) style houses in the complex.

PIAGGE REDESIGN
The Piagge is an outerlying district of Florencealong the Arno River. Our studio of combined American and Italian students studied the master plan of the districtdone by Giancarlo de Carlo. Groups of four were designated to study an area within the Piagge. Our group focused on the center where the community center was located. Our goal was to connect the river to the community center and the social housing area though a pedestrian rambla. The design was a collaboration of all teammembers.

Located in the entertainment district of Chicago, this project dealt with scale within the urbancontext and a program that encompassed different functions. Bringing in natural light and providing a sense of community were the main points of study for this semester. The public elements were placed along the street front to enhance the life of the area, with residences along the upper levels.

Located between the Chattahooche River and Main Street in Columbus, Ga, this studio dealt with creating a transitionbetween the developing river bank and urban context on main street. Trying to maintain the historic context of the area in a new method was the main focus for this project. This also lead to dealing with different levels of light in the various interior spaces.

Creating a space that was both public and private was the main focus of this studio. By making the boat house a beacon for the city and riverwalk along the Alabama River, all types of people and events would be drawn to the building and the riverwalk. Seperating the different types of amenities by a large public space was the strategy for the building layout.

This semester dealt with the issues that arise with desiging in a neighborhood setting. There were specific codes and guidelines that had to be adhered to in the design. Each studio member was designated a site that combined would become a neighborhood. The dwelling focused on views and comfort for the residents. There was a linear process for the development of this project. We began with a scrap piece that was our “baby” that continued to develop into the final project. 20

Intro to Graphic Design
The assignment was to take a photo of a prominent fea-ture in the Piagge district of Florence, Italy and to create a crazy scenerio. The power lines in this area create a barrier between the residences and the Arno River, so a crazy scenerio would be to use the infrastructure as a jungle gym for children in the area.
