Abetenim Arts Village, Ghana

This design makes use of local materials, local and low-tech labor, and a sim-plicity that allows room for individualization.

The Abetenim Arts Village sits in the rural land between Kumasi and Accra. Abetenim, which means Village of Palmtrees, has a population of roughly 1000 farmers and artisans. While a common means of livelihood is the harvesting of palm oil, a common goal in the village is to redefine the repu-tation of mud as a building material.

Spaces can be added linearly backwardsto create a hierarchy of privacy.

The housing area of the Abetenim Arts Village is to be arranged in radial communities.

This plan allows for easy naviga-tion between homes while creating ample space for outdoor activity and play.

While the space for each home is deliniated, the community is open and connected.

Simplicity of design allows for thecreation of space through activity,and the individualization of spaceby the occupant.

THE TIDAL SHIFT HOTEL ADDRESSES THE REVITALIZATION OF THE DC WATERFRONYT AS A PLACE THAT EXISTS AS THE CONTEXT FOR THIS NEW HOTEL.BY CREATING MORE OF A DESTINATION, THIS LINKS THE WATERFRONT TO THE PROCESSION OF DC’S MONUMENTAL ATTRACTIONS, AS WELL AS OPENSUP THE AQUATIC TRAFFIC COMING FROM THE POTOMAC.

THE FORM INDUCES A MANNER OF PEACE THAT IS REMINISCENT OF WAVES AND AND RIPPLES, AND MAXIMIZESTHE VIEWS OVER THE WATER. EVEN MADE FROM CONCRETE AND STEEL, THE TIDAL SHIFT HOTEL EXUDES AN ETHEREAL LIGHTNESS SHROUDED IN CHERRY BLOSSOMS.

THE MONKEY BREAD SPA AND BATHS IS A PILGRAMMAGE DESTINATION FOR THE ADVEN-TURER, WHO AT THE END OF THEIR JOURNEY DESIRES THE EXOTIC AND MYSTERIOUS HEAL-ING RITUALS THAT ARE PERFORMED IN THIS ONE-OF-A-KIND PLACE. THE PODS OF THE SPA HANG FROM THE BAOBAB TREE LIKE THE MONKEY BREAD FRUIT WITH STEEL CORDS COVERED IN BAOBAB BARK, AND ARE CON-NECTED BY INTERLAPPING, PATHWAYS AND STAIRS.

THE TRUNKS OF BAOBAB TREES CAN REACH 36FT IN DIAMETER. THE TRUNK OF THE M.B.S.B. IS 20 FT IN DIAMETER, AND THE HOL-LOWED TRUNK IS A RESERVOIR FOR THE WATER USED AT THE SPA, WHICH IS DRAWN UP IN A BUCKET AND TREATED IN THE OILS AND WATER ROOM. THE BAOBAB TREE IS KNOWN FOR ITS LONG LIFE AND FOR ALL OF THE LIFE SUSTAINING PRODUCTS THAT CAN BE HARVESTED FROM IT. THE MONKEY BREAD SPA AND BATHS SPEAKS TO THE BAOBAB TREE’S VERY NATURE.
