Free apprenticeship recruitment support service launchedA new free business boosting support service is set to provide a helping hand to small businesses in Harrogate who are thinking of recruiting a young person as an apprentice.

The North Yorkshire Apprenticeship hub offers impartial advice and support to help businesses through the maze of choosing an apprenticeship framework, identifying the right training provider and employing the best apprentice.

The unique one stop shop approach also offers information on the Apprenticeship Grant for Employers (AGE) which can offer businesses £1,500, provided they haven’t taken on an apprentice within the last 12 months.

The service is part of the Leeds City Region initiative which aims to encourage business growth and the new hub will provide an essential one-to-one service according to new Hub Manager, Karen Leah.

“Businesses everywhere are seeing the advantages of recruiting an apprentice. 96% of employers report benefits to their business with over 80% seeing an increase in productivity.

“However, for the busy small business it can be a challenging process which is why the hub offers a vital service. It will considerably reduce the time commitment for employers by helping with identifying frameworks, training providers and offering support with applications.

“There are 280 different Apprenticeship frameworks ranging from general business administration to specialist para legal, engineering or marketing, covering over 1500 jobs roles.”

Jonathan Elvin, owner and Head chef of the Pantry in Harrogate has seen his business thrive since he took on Josh Dove as an apprentice six months ago.

“Having someone who is enthusiastic and keen to learn like Josh is bound to have a positive impact on business. I’d recommend Apprenticeships to any business because taking on a young person gives employers the opportunity to train them in line with the way the business operates.”

And for Josh, who says he’s been passionate about cooking since he was five, the opportunity was too good to miss.

“I live for cooking and this Apprenticeship means I can learn the basics alongside the more creative side of cooking that Jonathan can teach me. He trained with Michelin chefs throughout the world and working with him means I’m learning from the best.”

Sport and Public Service Students ‘Go Extreme’ before Christmas…During the last week of term FE students and 14-16 students studying at the KC stadium were given the opportunity to experience some new sports (Go-Karting, Skiing) and compete against each other in an ‘Extreme’ swimming Gala.

Public Service tutor Neil Davison took the Wolfreton Yr 11 on an enrichment trip to York Motor Village Go Karting, where the students competed in a timed qualifying session to determine the starting lineup on the grid. The students and Public Service tutor Chris Pickering then competed in a 15 lap race. The race was won by Rhys Burton who got to carry the chequered Flag round on his victory lap.

The Sports Academy students took part in a swimming Gala organised by Neil Davison and ‘Sports Academy Director’ Richard Crompton. Students from each of the sports took part and formed their own teams to compete in seven different events. The Gala was the culmination of a new initiative this year, which has allowed the sports students to go to swimming classes during one of their Academy training sessions. The events were a mixture of swimming water Polo and underwater swimming; the event was won by the boys football team representatives

who won five of the seven events.

Level 2 Public Students took to the ski slopes just before Christmas in order to achieve assignment criteria for the ‘Outdoor Adventurous Activities’ unit. All the students went to ‘Xscape’ with unit tutor Jane Quinn and Course Leader Danny Brett. The students spent an hour on the ski slope receiving professional tuition from the ski instructors learning how to ski; and then went into the ‘Lazer Challenge’ to compete against each other in a combat scenario.

Josh Bennett Level 2 Public Service said: “The day was brilliant, it is a great way to do your assignments and help achieve unit criteria”

Jane Quinn Public Service tutor said: “We try to be as creative as possible when it comes to assessing students, and this way they learn a new skill which they may take up after this visit.”

Christmas Generosity At HCUKNVQ 3 Business Admin students (BAIT 3) have been busy fund raising for Cancer Research. The students donated a range of Christmas gifts/food and produced a fantastic hamper. Due to the diverse nature of students in the group, the hamper included confectionary from Latvia and Poland as well as the most important item - reindeer food!

All students in the group were involved in selling the raffle tickets. They obviously did an incredible job, using a combination of charm and persuasive techniques, raising an impressive £315!

Staff and students from BAIT 3 would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your generosity.

AA2A Artists Lou Hazelwood and Sarah Pennington and MA students Marcel Craven and Liz Dees will be showing their work in the Foyer Gallery from Thursday 8th January 2014 where there will be a private view from 5pm-7pm.

The exhibition runs until 31st January 2014 and will feature some vibrant, poignant and though provoking 2D and 3D work.

Curated by Marcel Craven, this exhibition is the first this year in the Gallery.

The exhibition will be open to the public 10-4pm and to all students and staff.

Student published in HDMKai Gill, a first year student on the BA(Hons) Journalism and Digital Media programme at Hull School of Art and Design, has had an interview with a Hull KR player published in the Hull Daily Mail. Kai is currently on work experience in the media department at Hull KR. The work placement, originally arranged for six weeks, has just been extended indefinitely. Kai recently interviewed Hull KR hooker Josh Hodgson, who has become a patron for local charity East Riding Electric Eels Powerchair football club. Kai said “I am so proud that my article has been published in the Hull Daily Mail. I feel that I’m pursuing my writing career already.”

Harrogate College students learn new boxing skillsHarrogate College’s Core Foundation Sports group have been going to St Pauls Boxing Academy to see where Luke Campbell trains and to be coached by his Boxing coaches.

The students learned about discipline required in boxing as well as some boxing techniques. After a fitness session they were able to practice their new skills on the punch bags.

Level 1 Enterprise students Christmas wreathsLevel 1 Enterprise students made Christmas Wreaths for sale in the week running up to Christmas at Harrogate College. This is an annual event for this group, aged 16 to 18, to help raise money for Help for Heroes.

The wreaths were sold to members of staff and family and the students raised £100 which will be donated to the charity.

As part of the students’ development on the course, the students improved their skills set by demonstrating team work, fund raising for Charity, fine-tuning their motor skills, colour co-ordination and highlighting their planning skills.

The Nestlé Toque d’Or competition carries the most enviable reputation for inspiring and challenging catering students up and down the country. We strive to offer real life experiences, exposure to key industry influencers, as well as exciting challenges to get the very best out of the contestants.

2014 will not disappoint!

Lorna Witney, Josh Worrall and Courtney Green will pit their skills and knowledge against some of the best Colleges in the UK. The learners have already demonstrated their knowledge in relation to the Hospitality and Catering Industry against a field of over 140 entrants.

Task 1 the students had to complete a multi choice test paper on a range of practical based skills.

They also had to produce within 80 minutes a detailed written report on how they would set up and operate a Gastro pub set in a rural location.

The learners were judged to be part of the top 30 in the country.

TASK 2 Bring their concept to life in a live cooking and serving competition being held on 4th February 2014.

Two years ago Hull College reached the Grand Final of this most prestigious Catering compettion confirming that Hull College is up there with the best the country has to offer.

Lorna, Josh and Courtney will have to be at their best, demonstrating excellent food skills, knowledge and team work to emulate the achievements gained in 2012.

Lorna team captain and part-time commis Chef at the renowned Restaurant 1884 is full of confidence beating the competition, she is already making plans for the awards Evening being held at the world famous Dorchester Hotel London.

NVQ Level 3 Business Admin and IT (BAIT) student Adam Dewson has attended a 2 day workshop offered by his work placement provider Probe. The aim of the course was to help participants build confidence, identify aspirations and set goals.

Adam has built his self-esteem and taken responsibility for his own future. He has identified his personal strengths and areas for development, setting himself key goals for the future. The course has enhanced his employability

skills and enabled him to move closer to achieving the gold passport.Adam started his work placement with Probe whilst on his NVQ Level 2 Business Admin course. As Probe were impressed with Adam, they asked him to continue his placement with them when he progressed to Level 3.

The support and opportunities that local employers provide Hull College students is invaluable for students achieving the passport to employment.

Goole Young WritersStudents from Goole’s 14-16 College recently entered the Young Writers’ Power of Poetry competition which provides the opportunity for the successful students to have their work published in a special anthology.

The Power of Poetry selected entries for publication based on perception, imagination, expression and creative use of language.

The two students who have been successful are 14 year old Oliwia Wantoch-Rekowska and 15 year old Megan Foster. Both students attend Goole College as part of the 14-16 College and winning this competition is a great accolade for them and the College.

Prizes for this competition are 1 x £1,000 first prize, 2 x £500 second prizes and 4 x £250 prizes for the best schools. Students have the chance to be picked as one of 12 finalists across the UK and could win and iPad.

A copy of Oliwia and Megan’s work will appear in The Power of Poetry – Poems From The North East and will be kept at the British Library and further libraries across the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Kauther the Christmas teddy finds his homeThe Business Administration and Information Technology Students (BAIT) L2 raised £95 through their first fundraising activity. This is a great start in raising money for Cancer Research. All of the prizes were donated by staff and students.

Congratulations to Linda Lee (Department of Health, Care and Applied Science) who was the lucky winner, taking home not only Kauther but a stash of Christmas treats. The students would like to thank all of those who had a go at guessing the name.

HSAD Visiting Lecturer Julia McCormick (Designer-Maker) WED 29th January HSAD is pleased to present our next visiting speaker who is a designer and maker of period costumes specialising in the Tudor Era. Julia creates fabulous costumes with masks, headdresses and jewellery. She will present a very interesting, lively and informative talk about the design and construction of her costumes.

“The City of Hull offers a unique fusion of heritage and contemporary development, blending a rich history and culture with the changing landscape of the 21st century. Hull College enjoys an unrivalled position at the heart of the historic old town quarter of Hull, with its museums and theatres.

Although I was born in Canada I am proud that I am from an old Yorkshire family – my father was born and bred in Hull – he also attended Hull University as well as returning to the University to teach Mathematics. I grew up in

Elloughton which is a small village a few miles south – my Aunt still lives in Hull and I regularly visit the area.

I will be presenting my Tudor Costume Talk/Lecture - a very interesting, lively and informative talk about the design/construction and inspiration for my historical gowns, as well as a brief history of the people who wore them. Integral to the event is a display of four costumes on mannequins with headdresses, fans, underwear and jewellery as well as a personal appearance by King Henry VIII. Costumes for Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots and Anne Boleyn are also included.”

The Talk will take place at 2pm – 3pm. AT120, Queens Gardens, HULL.

There will be costumes on display.

Student Engagement EventOn 27th November 2013, the Students’ Union President Emma Palmer and HE Registry Officer Holly Watcham attended the Collaborative Provision Conference at Hull University and delivered a training session on students as partners in decision making.

The theme of the conference was on “Student Led Partnership in HE” with other workshop sessions being delivered by Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education and Hull University. The training session was delivered to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning at Hull University, Glenn Burgess as well as other colleagues from partner groups and other educational establishments.

The purpose of the training was to identify the importance of student involvement in decision making – from having a rep system to involving them in big decisions such as validation of awarding bodies especially with the College going through validation of our own Foundation Degree Awarding Powers. It looked into good practice and where there may be barriers such as lack of communication.

The session as a whole was a success and even the Pro- Vice Chancellor of Teaching and Learning at Hull University made references to the session in his closing remarks for the conference!

Destinations SurveyAs part of the College annual Progression/Destination survey, we are currently in the progress of contacting all of our students who completed substantial courses last year (and who have not returned to the College this year) to find out what their destination was.

The data collected from the survey provides very important information to the College, schools and course teams, in terms of meeting the needs of students, progression rates into employment and on to further/higher education, etc. It also provides excellent information about which employers/universities students are going to. This in turn provides crucial information for Marketing and the Commercial department to focus their attention.

To ensure we are optimising the use of this data, we are asking course tutors to compliment the survey, by providing any information they might have about their previous students. A template will be made available in the Business Support Offices and circulated to colleagues for completion and subsequent return to the BSOs.

HCUK Success storyI first met Emily Butler three years ago whilst she was carrying out her Level 2 Business and administration qualification. Since then Emily has gone on to be a success in her role at the college however this success story focuses on her achievement when she visited Uganda and how she reflects on using her skills and knowledge during her time there. I asked Emily how the trip of a lifetime went and what she brings back to the life she has now. Emily told me that she reflects on what people take for granted and how lucky we are. She explained in more detail about the importance of good learning facilities and how important role models are at a recent presentation in her Level 3 Business Admin class.

Emily will no doubt be a success on her next adventure whether it be in the classroom or another way that leads to her future pathway.
