PRINCIPLEThe Portaflow 300 is a Transit Time ultrasonic flow meter thathas been designed to work with clamp-on transducers, thusenabling liquid flowing within a closed pipe to be measuredaccurately, without the need for any mechanical parts to beinserted through the pipe wall or to protrude into the flowsystem. When ultrasound is transmitted between transducersX and Y, the speed at which the sound travels through theliquid is accelerated slightly by the velocity of the liquidthrough the pipe. When ultrasound is transmitted in theopposite direction, the flow of the liquid causes thetransmitted sound to decelerate. The subsequent timedifference is directly proportional to the flow velocity in thepipe. Having measured the flow velocity and knowing thepipe cross-sectional area, the volumetric flow can be easilycalculated. Micronics engineers have developed ameasurement technique which has the ability to resolveextremely small time differences down to 25 pico seconds(25x10-12 seconds), thus giving extremely good performanceon small pipes or in large pipes with low velocity flows.

ELECTRONICSThe Portaflow 300 electronics are housed in an IP66enclosure which incorporates the graphic display, keypad, sensor and output facility connections. The Microprocessordriven electronics makes the instrument respond quickly toany instructions given. Programming the unit is carried out byselecting the options displayed in the main menu and byfollowing the simple instructions given. Flow readings canthen be achieved on most applications within a few minutes. The use of rechargeable batteries allows the unit to beoperated for a period in excess of 24 hours depending on thefacilities used. Continuous operation via the PSU is possiblewhile also recharging the battery pack. The graphic displayprovides flow data in large highly visible characters which canbe enhanced by the use of the back light facility, making itpossible to read the flow rate from a distance of 5-10 metresaway under extremely poor lighting conditions. Errormessages, battery status, signal strength, applicationtemperature, time and date are all continuously displayed, aswell as flow information in either numerical or graph format, keeping the user fully aware of the measurement process.Languages are available as an option, in English, French orGerman. They can be supplied on disc to be downloaded viathe RS232 or already programmed into the instrument.

TRANSDUCERSThe Portaflow 300 is able to work with four differenttransducer sets, depending on the application. Hightemperature sensors are now supplied as standard. Theinstrument is supplied with transducer sets ‘A’ and ‘B’ asstandard. Transducer sets ‘C’ and ‘D’ are available as optionsto increase the velocity and pipe range of the instrument. ‘D’transducers will only work up to +80ºC and are supplied andare supplied seperately with webbing straps. Chains are usedto secure the guide rails to the pipe. Magnetic assemblies areavailable for tghe ‘B’ guide rail only.

The built in data logger has a 100K memory which is able tolog 50,000 readings. Data can be stored in 5 second to 1 hour intervals. Each individual site or application can beprogrammed with the name of your choice, which makes thestored data easily identifiable when being displayed on thescreen or being downloaded. The data for each site is storedin the memory until it has been cleared. The stored data canbe displayed on the instrument in text or graph format. Theinstrument is also capable of downloading the stored data viathe RS232 output port to a printer or PC onto a standardspreadsheet.

DATA LOGGER

Flow range is dependent on the pipe size and the velocity ofthe liquid being measured. The 4 transducer sets have beenspecifically designed to cover a wide range of pipe sizes andflow ranges. Transducer set ‘C’ trebles the velocity range oftransducer set ‘B’, allowing for higher velocity flow to bemeasured on larger pipes. Transducers can be used in eitherReflex or Diagonal mode to provide the performance bestsuited to every application.

Case Study

Energy Saving Case Study – Portaflow 300 measurements facilitate major savings

Micronics Portaflow 300 portable flow meter used to measure actual flow rates on an existing 75kW motor pump circuit in a process application, which led to the replacement of the pump with a smaller 11kW unit and major savings!

Energy SavedAnnual Energy Consumption reduced from £5698.00 to £926.00!

Capital Cost £1500.00 and payback in 4 months!

Potential for Replication – 1000’s in Industrial Process and Building Services applications where pumps are frequently oversized and cost effective non-invasive monitoring can identify the potential for significant savings without the costs and disruption associated with drain downs, process disruption and down time!

Company

Micronics Ltd is a UK based company established for 20 years with customers in over 40 countries. They can help solve most flow and energy metering and monitoring requirements with their range of non-invasive “Ultrasonic Clamp on” flow and energy meters, offering significantly lower cost installation and operat-ing costs than alternative in-line meters.

Application Details

Installed pump: Ingersoll Rand 150-125-250 end suction pump, 75kW 2900-rpm motor

The installed pump was supplied from a high level suction tank (CLT1) and delivered process water through a two stage condenser back to a balance tank (CLT2). It was observed that a flow control valve, installed in the discharge pipework, was only 20% open! Process flow requirements were relatively constant.

INVESTIGATION PROCEDURE

1) The flow required to the condenser was recorded using a Micronics Portaflow 300 non-invasive flow meter.

2) Pressure gauges were fitted:a) at the pump to determine actual generated pressure head.b) before and after the condenser to determine actual pressure requirement.

3) Power input was recorded using a kW power analyser.

CONCLUSION

After obtaining the manufacturers data curve and analysis of the existing pumprecorded performance, it was concluded that:

1) The pump was too large for the flow rate required, this was resulting in poor efficiency as the operating point was back-up' the curve in an inefficient area.

2) 33m head was being wasted across the control valve = 66% wasted energy!

3) The pump was providing a 50m head but the total head requirement was only 17m!

4) The pump should be changed to an appropriate size for the circuit load.

Micronics Portaflow 300

The Portaflow 300 measures the flow of liquid within a pipeline through two sound transmitter/receivers clamped to the outside of the pipe wall. The sound is directed through the pipe wall into the flowing liquid where the speed of the sound wave is modulated by the flowing liquid. This modulation is converted into volume flow rate by the electronics in the flow meter. There are no mechanical moving parts required either inside or outside the pipe to make the measurement.

IP67 / NEMA 4XTapped holes: European thread

General informationIntroductionThe F012 is a local indicator to display the

actual flowrate, total and accumulated total.

The total can be reset to zero by pressing the

CLEAR button twice. The eleven digit

accumulated total however can not be reset to

zero. Awide selection of options further enhance

this models capabilities, including Intrinsic

Safety for hazardous area applications.

DisplayThe display has large 17mm (0.67”) and 8mm

(0.31”) digits which can be set to show flowrate

and / or totals. On-screen engineering units are

easily configured from a comprehensive

selection. The accumulated total can register up

to 11 digits and is backed-up in EEPROM

memory every minute, just as the running total.

As the F012 has been designed for field

mounted applications, a smart display update

function has been incorporated. Related to the

lower temperatures, the update frequency of the

LCD is tuned automatically to achieve a

readable display even at -40°C / -40°F.

BacklightFor those applications where readabillity during

day and night is an issue, a bi-color backlight is

available. The background color can be set to

green or amber and the intensity can be

adjusted from the keyboard. The display is a

transflective type, which means that a high

contrast reading is guaranteed in full sunlight

as well as during the night. This backlight

option is also available Intrinsically Safe.

ConfigurationAll configuration settings are accessed via a

simple operator menu which can be pass-code

protected. Each setting is clearly indicated with

an alphanumerical description, therefore

avoiding confusing abbreviations and baffling

codes. Once familiar with one F-series product,

you will be able to program all models in the

series without a manual. All settings are safely

stored in EEPROM memory in the event of

sudden power failure.

Signal inputThe F012 will accept most pulse and analog

input signals for flow or mass flow measurement.

The input signal type can be selected by the

user in the configuration menu without having

to adjust any sensitive mechanical dip-switches,

jumpers or trimmers. The analog input version

is even available as 4 - 20mAinput loop

powered display.

Power supplySeveral power supply options are available to

power the F012 and sensor. Most popular is our

battery powered version with a long life lithium

battery which will last up to five years. For

analog sensors, a 4 - 20mAloop powered

version is available as well. Areal sensor supply

is offered with the 24V AC/DC or 115 - 230V AC

power supply option.

ULTRASONIC LIQUID FLOW ANDHEAT/ENERGY METERS

The Ultraflo 2000 is a “Transit Time” ultrasonic flowmeterdesigned to work with clamp-on transducers, enablingaccurate measurement of liquid flowing within a closed pipe, without the need for any mechanical parts to be insertedthrough the pipe wall and into the flow system. The Ultraflo2000 is therefore simple to install requiring no shut downtime, with the added advantage of no pressure drop or contact withthe process liquid.

The Ultraflo 2000 has been designed for permanent meteringon a pipe range of 13mm up to 5000mm and is supplied withtransducers and mounting hardware to suit the application. The Ultraflo displays volumetric flow rate in a wide range ofunits, linear flow rate in metres and feet per second with totalvolume flow displayed up to a maximum of 12 digits.

Additional facilities offered by the Ultraflo are a 4-20 mA flowproportional output, Pulse output or Set point, Negative flowindication and Display/Output variable damping, helping theUltraflo cope with poor and unstable flow conditions. Alloutputs are configured to interface with different types of datacollection systems including Building Management Systems.

An optionally available version, the Ultraflo 2000HM, can beused to meter Heat or Energy. By using the ultrasonictransducers to measure the flow and two PT100 temperaturesensors to measure the flow and return temperature, theamount of Heat/Energy used can be displayed as kW, kCal/hr,MJ/min and MJ/sec. Flow rate, Total flow and Temperaturedifferential are also displayed. The Heatmeter version has two4-20mA remote outputs to monitor these measurements aswell as pulse output to record Total flow or Energy.

The instrument is able to work on a wide variety of pipe sizesfrom 13mm up to 5000mm, simply by selecting the correcttransducers and attaching them to the outside of the pipewallusing the mounting hardware provided.

The setup operation is easily accomplished on the push buttonkeypad with the user only requiring to know the pipedimensions and the type of pipe wall material. All otherapplication parameters can be measured by the instrumentitself.

ELECTRONICSTHE Ultraflo 2000 electronics are housed in an ABS, IP67enclosure. The complete system including transducers havebeen CE approved. Programming of the Flowmeter andHeatmeter is carried out using the keypad incorporated in thehousing. Simple set up instructions are displayed after enteringdata on pipe size, pipe material and application data (liquidtype and temperature). Follow the instructions on the display, connect the transducers as instructed and mount on the pipeat the specified separation distance. The instrument is nowready to read flow. All application and calibration data ispassword protected to prevent programmed data beingchanged inadvertently, whilst the clear front cover and thebacklit display protect the keypad and ensure that theinstrument is easy to read in poor lighting conditions.

FLOW MEASUREMENT PRINCIPLEWhen ultrasound is transmitted between the two transducersX and Y, the speed at which the sound travels through theliquid is accelerated slightly by the velocity of the liquid in thepipe. When ultrasound is transmitted in the opposite directionthe flow of the liquid causes the transmitted sound todecelerate. The subsequent time difference is directly proportional to theflow velocity in the pipe. Having measured the flow velocityand knowing the pipe cross-sectional area, the volumetric flowcan easily be calculated. Micronics engineers have developeda measurement technique which has the ability to resolveextremely small time differences down to 25 pico seconds (25x10-12 seconds), therefore giving extremely good performanceon small pipes or in large pipes with low velocity flows.

FLOW TRANSDUCERSTransducers are supplied according to the applicationinformation given when placing an order. All transducers areclamped to the outside of the pipe wall with the ruggedmounting hardware provided. Transducers are available tooperate on pipework from 13mm up to 5000mm and attemperatures between -20°C and +200°C. The electronics areconnected to the transducers via coax cable which can be asmuch as 200 metres long without affecting performance.

FLOW RANGEThe Ultraflo 2000 will measure the flow of clean and dirtyliquids in full pipes with a velocity range of 0.02 m/sec to 12m/sec. The flow range of the meter is dependent on the pipesize and the liquid velocity, which determines the selection oftransducers that are supplied with each instrument. Theinstrument can be reprogrammed to use different transducersin other different modes in order to overcome signal strengthdifficulties, ease installation problems or to re-adjust the flowrange of the instrument, should it be required.

HEAT METERSThe Heatmeter has been designed for general purpose energymonitoring using clamp-on flow and temperature transducers. The Heatmeter combines a flow measurement generated byusing the ultrasonic “Time of Flight” technique to measureflow with the temperature differential input generated by a pairof PT100 temperature transducers, the combined outputproduces a measurement of heat or energy used. TheHeatmeter version gives two 4-20mA outputs that can beused to monitor either the Flow, Energy or TemperatureDifferential. The pulse output can be used to record Total Flowor Total Energy.
