The use of Asynchronous TransferMode (ATM) transmission has set achallenge for the installation,operation and maintenance ofnetworks beyond that encounteredwith traditional communicationtechnology. ATM allows theco-existence of multiple data typeson a single network, using any typeof physical interface. Such a diverseset of demands is a heavy burden forengineers implementing andmanaging the networks. Agilent’sauroraJazz is the tool that has anextensive test capability whichprovides all the assistance requiredfor ensuring that ATM networksoperate at their maximum efficiency.

The complexity of ATM networks andequipment demands a new level ofcapability from test equipment. TheauroraJazz meets that challenge andexceeds expectations. Whether thetest requirement is for commission-ing, maintaining or troubleshooting,the user of auroraJazz will beimpressed with its ability to quicklyand efficiently prove the correctoperation of ATM circuits. and OAM cell analysis. ATM traffictests allow complete profiling of upto 1024 cell streams, includingaverage and peak cell rates, cell lossstatistics and O.191 Quality of Servicemeasurements over Permanent

Virtual Circuits (PVC). Applicationsinvolving the transfer of TCP/IPmessage packets can be tested usingan IP PING to ensure end to endconnectivity.

Traffic Monitoring

1024 ATM circuits can be monitoredsimultaneously with auroraJazz.Summary information is provided onPeak Cell Rate, Average Cell Rate,alarm status, cell discard tagging, anddetailed circuit information givestotal cell count, etc. Circuits may bemarked for Traffic Policing verifica-tion, which provides statistics ofcontract violations and can discardnon-compliant cells when theauroraJazz is looping cellstreamsfrom Receive to Transmit ports.

Quality of Service and Service LevelAgreement Verification

The ITU-T O.191 test method isimplemented to provide detailed

assessment of circuit quality bymeasuring lost cells, mis-insertedcells, cell transport delay, and 1 or 2point cell delay variation. Counts areprovided of Severely Errored CellBlocks, Errored Seconds and SeverelyErrored Seconds. This test method isdesigned for proving that circuitperformance meets the requirementsof the service user and can be used bythe network operator to demonstrateto the customer that the networkperformance is satisfactory.

• Quality of Service testing (O.191)for cell errors and cell timing toprove Service Level Agreement isbeing supplied.

• OAM cell processing for circuitalarms, continuity check andloopback.

IP Ping

The auroraJazz is able to sendand receive Ping messagesthrough a selected ATMcellstream. This enables the testerto prove IP connectivity torouters over the ATM network.Response messages will also begenerated when Ping messagesare received from other devices.Up to 16 addresses are supportedand a measurement of loop timeis provided. The Ethernet portwill respond to PING messagesreceived from other devices.
