Overview

Multi-Purpose Monitor

Are you in need of a small screen for your project? Our 5" (800x480) TFT display might bejust what you're looking for. This display features a standard 40-pin connector and iscompatible with our TFP401 HDMI breakout. Combined with our PowerBoost and a lipobattery, you can make this into a portable display. Our 3D printed case houses all of theelectronics to make a nice little package. You only need to wire four connects, so it's a veryeasy DIY project that you can make in just a half an hour.

Embedded Display

There's lots of ways to position the display driver, effectively giving you the ability to mountthe HDMI port in any orientation. This can be very useful, especially when you need toembed the display into an enclosure. Our 40-pin FPC extension board gives you theflexibility to position the display driver away from the display, giving you the ability to designyour own setup.

Design & 3D Printing

I designed the case to house the screen, display driver, powerboost, battery and on/offswitch. It's actually quite thin compared to a regular display because it doesn't need VGAor composite inputs. This is about as small as you can get, so it's great if you need to savespace. The cover and case are designed to snap together. I designed little nubs on theedge of the case that snap into corresponding indentations so the two pieces actually locktogether. It's also easy to take apart. The microUSB port from the display driver andpowerboost are accessible, so it's easy to power off a USB port or recharge the battery.

This provides a visual reference for the wiring of the components. They aren't true to scale, just meant to be used as reference.

To power this circuit, we'll use a 3.7v 2500mAh lipo battery. The PowerBoost has an onboard regulator that will convert the voltage to 5V automatically. It also has on-boardcharging circuit, so we can recharge it over USB when the battery gets low.

On/Off Switch

Connect Switch toPowerBoost

I’m going to start by connectingthe slide switch to thePowerBoost.

Switch Wires

To do this, I’ll use wire strippersand a spool of wire. I’ll need tocut two pieces of wire from thespool and make sure they’re longenough to fit inside the case.

Page 14: Portable 5in Monitor with HDMI - Adafruit Industries · Circuit Diagram Circuit Diagram ... Connect FPC Extension Board ... //learn.adafruit.com/portable-5in-monitor-with-hdmi Page

Strip Wires

Then, I’ll use the wire strippers toremove a bit of insulation fromthe tips of each wire.

Secure Wires

I like to secure my wires to a pairof third helping hands. I find iteasier if the exposed wires areoriented facing the samedirection.

Tin Wires

To prevent the strands of wirefrom fraying, we can tin them byadding a small bit of solder.

© Adafruit Industries https://learn.adafruit.com/portable-5in-monitor-with-hdmi Page 14 of 35

Page 15: Portable 5in Monitor with HDMI - Adafruit Industries · Circuit Diagram Circuit Diagram ... Connect FPC Extension Board ... //learn.adafruit.com/portable-5in-monitor-with-hdmi Page

Secure Switch

Once that’s done, I’ll swap outthe wires for the slide switch.

Trim Switch

I’ll snip off one of the leads fromthe switch and cut the remainingtwo in half using flush diagonalcutters. Now I can work onattaching the wires to the slideswitch.

Tin Switch

Page 16: Portable 5in Monitor with HDMI - Adafruit Industries · Circuit Diagram Circuit Diagram ... Connect FPC Extension Board ... //learn.adafruit.com/portable-5in-monitor-with-hdmi Page

First, I’ll add a bit of solder to theleads on the slide switch. Thismakes it more sticky so it’s easierto attach wires.

Solder Wires toSwitch

Using the tip of the solderingiron, I’ll heat up tinned solder andconnect the wires.

Check Wires

With that done, I’ll double checkto see if the solder joints are niceand solid.

Solder Wires toPowerBoost

The ground wire from the displaydriver goes to ground on thepowerboost, and voltage tovoltage.

Check Wiring

And with that complete, we’repretty much done with all of thewiring and soldering.

Test Circuit

At this point, I’ll connect thebattery back to the PowerBoostand test the circuit, onceagain. So far so good, now wecan work on connecting thedisplay to the TPF401 driver.
