The atelier of Christian de Portzamparc
In 1980 Christian de Portzamparc set up his agency sur-rounded, inter alia, by Marie-Elisabeth Nicoleau, EtiennePierres and Bertrand Beau. In 1992, the studio expanded totake in new members such as Bruno Durbecq, Xu Hua andCline Barda and, among others, later welcomed AndrTerzibachian, Frdric Binet and Jean Daniel Boyer. Based in Paris, the agency has satellite offices near buil-ding sites, in addition to offices in New York and Rio deJaneiro, and represents a cohesive team of 80 people, drawn from all corners of the globe.
Hautes Formes
Christian de Portzamparcs beginnings
Christian de Portzamparc was born in Casablanca in 1944.He studied drawing, painting and architecture in the sixtiesat the Beaux-Art school of Paris with Eugne Baudoin andGeorge Candilis. He writes, travels and works actively ontheoretical research.
In 1971, he began his architectural work designing a poe-tic monument, the Water Tower in Marne-la-Valle, develo-ped around the theme of the Tower of Babel, which wasbuilt in 1974 in the center of a crossroad that he had rede-signed. This semi-transparent construction uses water andvegetation to form an architectural landmark in a vast urbanlandscape.
In 1974, in his project for the competition of La Roquette,he created a vast central green-space piazza on the site ofa former prison, surrounded on four sides by a rhythmicseries of buildings and housing units, a rectangular slice offorest, transposed into the city of Paris.City development imposes itself, from the beginning, as thetheme and the central pre-occupation of Christian dePortzamparcs work, a permanent reflection on architecturalspace and city space, their relationships and their evolu-tions.He maintained, already at the beginning of the seventies, that modern urban models must be reviewed, and that areturn to the ancient models of urbanism was impossible.
In 1975, with this in mind, he designed the Rue desHautes-Formes development, a competition won within theProgram for New Architecture for 210 housing units inParis, in the 13th arrondissement. Built with GeorgiaBenamo in 1979, this project demonstrates a concrete refi-ning of his theoretical perspectives, and represents acontemporary architecture woven into a continuity with theexisting city, enhancing and transforming it.The quality of this housing project has been confirmed overthe years by its occupants.
Chteau dEau
In Boulogne, for the TV-Channel Canal Plus, the openblock system operates with great efficiency housing333,560 sq. sf. of prestige offices on the river Seine in seve-ral linked buildings (2000).
In the same spirit, Christian de Portzamparc achieved in2006 a mixed housing and commercial complex Block 1in Almere, Netherlands.
Open block, architecture in the city
With a renewed vision of urban structures, which he callsthe open block, Christian de Portzamparc has achievedmany constructions and competitions in France and abroadfor neighborhood projects and for many small city seg-ments : a collective housing project has been built inFukuoka-Japan (1990) and housing blocks on the edge ofthe Bercy Park, in Paris (1994). An important work of buil-ding remodeling of a 60s development, located PlaceNationale in Paris (1996), and a housing neighborhood inGrenoble (2000) have also been realised.

Spaces dedicated to music
In the beginning of the 80s Christian de Portzamparc ente-red architectural competitions dedicated to music. The firstone was for a school of music : the Erik Satie Conservatory. He won and built this project in 1981.
His constant passion for music led him participate in aseries of competitions concerning art, music and dancesuch as the Dance School of the Opera of Paris in Nanterre(1983 - 1987), for which he received the Equerre dArgentin 1988 and the international competition for the OperaBastille (in which Christian de Portzamparc was one of thesix laureates out of 500 participants).
The City of Music (Equerre dArgent 1995) was designed fora competition in 1984 at La Villette in Paris. It is oneof the President Mitterrands Grands Travaux, and is com-posed of two separate entities.
The National Conservatory of Music and Dance opened in1990, and the second part, open to the public with theconcert hall and the museum, was inaugurated in 1995.The elliptic concert hall, unique of its kind, has become amajor reference for its acoustic qualities.
Pierre Boulez has been a constant advisor of Christian dePortzamparc on this project with the acoustic specialist XuYa Ying. In 1992, Christian de Portzamparc participated to the com-petition of the International Convention Hall of Nara inJapan. The chamber music hall offers a new way of seeingthrough the geometries of the Moebius strip.
The Luxembourg Philarmonie was inaugurated in June2005. It was the laureate project of an international compe-tition in 1997. Christian de Portzamparcs attitude is toconsider architectural space as an acoustic as well as avisual and a physical experience. This can gradually be feltby the public already from the outside, in the lobby and inthe hall. The essential musical emotion is like a echo of theprogressive perception of the concert hall.
In Rio de Janeiro a new City of Music is being built. Here,Christian de Portzamparc makes a tribute to Brazilianmodern architecture, the grand building presents a subtlemix of curves and straight lines. Its concert room is conver-tible into an Opera hall.

These museum projects followed the relatively modest onethat Christian de Portzamparc designed to extend theBourdelle Museum in Paris (1988), a limpid meditation onlight and space in relation to sculpture. In 1993 he workedon a project for a retail center holding 19 movie theaters anda shopping mall in Frankfurt, Germany.
The same year, his project for a cultural cquipment, LesChamps Libres in Rennes, was laureate of an internationalcompetition. This ambitious project housing a museum anda library, opened in April 2006. In Lyon Christian designedan extension of the Croix Rousse Hospital which will becompleted in 2009.
Major Institutions
This experience of large scale programs revealed its capaci-ties later in a series of institutional buildings, either public orprivate, built in the 90s, such as the Law Courts in Grasse(1999), in Paris the extension of the Convention Center,(1994-1999): a program of 441,000 sq.ft. of offices, amphi-theaters, exhibition halls and boutiques, transformed theimage of the institution, the use of the space and the urbanzone at the Porte Maillot entry to Paris. The new FrenchEmbassy in Berlin was inaugurated in January 2003.
In 1995 in Seoul, for the National Museum of Korea, theproject by Christian de Portzamparc was awarded secondprize among 500 projects, just like the Kansas City, Missouriproject in 1999, for the new wing of the Nelson AtkinsMuseum.

Towers
From the city to the object Christian de Portzamparc hasworked on towers since his first projects. The CrditLyonnais Tower, a singular object built over a railway station(1995) : a project integrated into the Rem Koolhaas master-plan for Euralille. It was to be followed by the studies for theBandai tower in Tokyo (1994), the Septentrion tower (1996)and the T1 tower (2001) both in La Defense, the HearstTower in New York (2000) and towers in Frankfurt (2002) .
The LVMH Tower in New York (1999) is acclaimed by thepress as New Yorks most important architectural event inthe last thirty years ; and was granted the Business Weekand Architectural Record 2001 award.
A second tower for the group LVMH was designed in 2001.It was to be settled next to the first tower, responding to it inshape and color but also keeping its own personnality.
In 2002 Christian de Portzamparc won the competition forthe new Socit Gnrale tower in Paris - La Dfense, com-pleted in 2008.

City Pieces, urban planning
At another scale, a series of competitions and commissionsfor urban planning and large neighborhood projects haveled to in-depth theoretical research and to the evolution ofnew practical work methods, enabling a re-interpretation ofthe rules of the game. Modern townscaping implies put-ting hazard and unexplored possibilities to work, calling intoaction the variety of forces and factors which characterizesour time. In Montpellier (in progress) in a peripheral sitehalf-way between the city and the country, Christian dePortzamparc has overlayed a rectilinear grid upon the modelof the garden-city.
In studies in Metz (1990) and in Aix en Provence (1989),he composed with the memory of the site by plugging open
block neighborhoods into the urban context. The studies in Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Prague, Sao Paulo,Fukuoka Bay in Japan, or in New York with the Con EdisonProject (2001), have shown that each site carried withinitself surprising virtualities that the projects revealed. The missions of master-planning and co-ordination are cur-rently being conducted in two neighborhoods in Paris:Massna Seine Rive Gauche and Porte dAsnires ; a quar-ter in the south of France in Montpellier and he is studyinga neigborhood in Beijing, China: the logistic port area..In2008, Christian de Portzamparc was among the 10 archi-tects selected by French president Sarkozy to rethink thegreater Paris area.
In 2009, the architect won an international competition forthe planning of the rue de la Loi in Brussels, the adminis-trative heart of Europe.
