CLUB NEWS COMMITTEE RESIGNATIONS Our Club Manager, David Gray, resigned on 21st February, and the Club President, Terry Forst resigned on 21st March. Both resignations were for personal reasons, not associated with club activities, but as you would expect, the additional workload of these positions would contribute to other issues.

No replacements have been nominated at this stage owing to a lack of a quorum at the committee meeting of 21st March, and another committee meeting has been called for Monday 4th April.

If you feel that you could contribute in either of these positions or serve in any other role on the committee in managing club activities, please let Barbara, Alvin, or Rob know by 4th April.

Australia Day

A very successful fundraising activity was held on Australia Day and other activities surrounding this day. A total of $5817.77 was raised for flood relief, of which $2,000 was sent to the Clare and Gilbert Valley Council for relief of those impacted by the Stockport flood, and $3817.77 was sent to the Queensland Premier’s Flood Relief Fund

Member News

A few of our members and associates are doing it tough at the moment:

Reg and Pat Mayfield have moved into aged care. Their association with our Anzac day and Rememberance Day activities will be sorely missed

Milton Gil is in hospital as is his mate and former owner of a property in East Terrace, Brien Parker.

Life Member Jim Sherriff has had a couple of operations on his eyes.

Berny and Lin Harrison suffered a significant fire in their home at Morphett Vale and will be living elsewhere until repairs can be effected.

On the positive side, the Webb extended family recently celebrated numerous birthdays by getting together at the club.

Members Draw

Congratulations to David Hornby, and Peter “Spider” Wright who have won the Members draw in the last two months.

The committee has decided to offer drink vouchers to those having birthdays who are present at the club when their birthday is announced.

The following are celebrating birthdays in the next 2 months:

Club Visitors It has been great to welcome a lot of visitors recently through the campground. These people come from all over Australia and some from other countries, and they spread the word. Many are surprised at the attractive interior of our “tin shed”. It creates a challenge to us to come up with making the exterior more inviting. In the meantime we propose to put photos of the interior at the campground and on the outside notice board. A sample of these photos appear on the back page of this issue. What do you think?

We are expecting a visit from the Maitland Auto Preservation Society and the Chrysler Restorers Club on July 3rd. Did you know that John Gilbert is a member of the Chrysler Restorers Club?

Web Page Our new web page is on its way. It is a project for Farina Fikri who is a student in Sustainable Online Community Engagement , School of Communication, International Studies and Languages, University of SA. In return for providing a training platform, we get the website and hosting free of charge. In getting the website established we will give the Port Parham and Webb Beach, the Club, and the campground exposure on the world wide web. If you have any ideas for incorporating in the web page, please let Alvin know.

Saving our Campground The editor was hoping to have an update report on the status of the campground study, but there had been no response before publishing deadline Strawberry Fete By all accounts the Strawberry Fete run jointly by the Dublin History Group and the Club was a success. Unfortunately we have no report or photos on this event. Club income for the weekend was not remarkable and it may be that the the takings from the Strawberry Fete made up for poor nights on Friday and Saturday

We had a fantastic night Sat 27th November to everyone who came along and gave us girls their support, we say “ Thankyou “ It was a very successful demonstration of what the girls have learned all year, it was great to see so many people there, clapping & cheering us along I had a few comments on how nice our costumes were, that’s always nice to hear, as we spent a lot of hours making them very much a team effort, thanks again Lyn for the extra time to draft and make the patterns, and do some sewing ( very talented is our Lyn ) thanks to Raelene who has become my right arm – taking care of accounts and is very good at organizing things for our group ,and to Valerie and Raylene for putting in extra time with sewing. There were a few other helping hands with sewing – Sue, Ellen, & Doris thanks very much for your help for you saved us some hours. There is no show without Music & Lights a big thank you to my Husband Terry who set up and operated all the equipment, and did a really good job. To our friends LIN & Bern cheers for the happy snaps and the Video memories. I look forward to starting a new year in Feb. Free classes held at Port Parham Club, for Ladies or any brave men! Port Parham, South Australia By rayjanet 9 April 2009 (found on the internet by Coralie Pratt)

Although we drove through Adelaide as they were preparing for the V8 race, we weren’t particularly discombobulated by that. After voting and all those boring things (washing, etc) the time spent in Port Parham was wonderful. I was able to go fishing, including two boat trips out into Spencer Gulf, visit the Port Parham Sports and Recreation Club, have a fascinating trip to Virginia and spend some time idling away.

I had an idyllic 10 days in Port Parham with the HF Radio Club, many thanks to Louie who organised the get-together. We stayed in the ‘caravan park’, a lovely free spot on the waterfront, complete with fresh town water, flushing toilets, and a couple of electric barbecues. Space was a bit tight with about 40 of us plus some rigs on their way to Whyalla for the CMCA rally and a few others just trying to find somewhere quiet to stay for a few days (fat chance!). Partly because Janet had to go to Townsville for a week for some medical tests, I had a quiet week OF BLISS.

Perhaps a few words about the HF Radio Club are appropriate… a bunch of people with the common interest of using high frequency radio to communicate over the vast distances of this great land. We have hundreds of members, increasing every day, spread right across the country. We also have a number of bases across Australia, conduct (by volunteers) schedules twice a day on both the East and West Coasts and can access emergency services like the Royal Flying Doctor Service. We also get together periodically and Janet and I will shortly be on our way to Casino in NSW for the HF Radio Club Expo.

Fishing in this part of the world is quite different. For a start, they use rakes to catch crabs and because the Gulf is very shallow, the tide recedes one to two kilometres at low tide and it is not unusual to launch hundreds of metres from the shore. The locals use specially built jinkers to tow their boat trailer out to the water and, after launching, leave it there until they return from fishing to recover it. Apparently, you do need to keep an eye on the tide charts, as the jinker is usually only able to drive in about one metre of water before it becomes drowned

We caught some fish, whiting were just starting to bite and snapper and snook were also about, squid (now officially called southern calamari), Razor Fish, a large bivalve with a scallop like muscle (delicious straight from the shell – and you then use the shell for burley) and lots of crabs – blue swimmers and sandies.

Len was one of the people we went fishing with, a real nature’s gentleman. When I mentioned that I needed to service my truck, he recommended his niece’s husband’s workshop in Virginia who did an excellent job of the servicing and provided a wonderful service to boot. While they were doing the service, Len caught up with me and took me on a tour of the area. Well, I didn’t think a small town like that could hold so much fascination – we visited a hydroponic lettuce ‘farm’ producing thousands of lettuce per week, a major olive processing plant (and the olives are delicious), and a small local winery (unfortunately no one was home when we visited, so no report on the quality of the wine). To top it off,

Page 11: PORT PARHAM SPORTS and SOCIAL CLUB INC NEWSLETTER … Ap… · port parham sports and social club newsletter april 2011 page 9 We had a fantastic night Sat 27 th November to everyone

PORT PARHAM SPORTS AND SOCIAL CLUB NEWSLETTER APRIL 2011 Page 11

Len was a sheetmetal craftsman in his working days and offered to make some brackets for me to mount my new solar panels on – bits of ‘scrap’ aluminium magically turned into angle brackets in his comprehensive workshop. They will probably be finished and fitted next week in Casino.

No mention of Port Parham would be complete without reference to the Port Parham Sports and Recreation Club, a small club run entirely by volunteers which is open 4 nights a week. They provide food from $5 a meal on Wednesday and Sunday (lasagna and chips, fish and chips, etc) to a comprehensive menu on Friday and Saturday nights with all meals still under $15 (Editors note, prices have increased since 2009!). They have draught beer available, wine (some local) by the bottle or glass, raffles and bingo, and the friendliest, most helpful bunch of folk I have met in years; you would be mad not to visit next time you are in the area (about 80 km north of Adelaide).

THE RECIPE PAGE

Winter is on its way, so soup sounds good

LEEK AND POTATO CREAM SOUP 30g butter 500g leeks (sliced) 500g potatoes peeled and sliced 1 large onion peeled and chopped 2 ½ cups of water

Salt and freshly ground pepper 1 teaspoon grated nutmeg 1 bay leaf 1 ¼ cups milk

To finish

½ teaspoon paprika Strips of leek finely chopped

Heat the butter in a large saucepan.

Add the leek, potato and onion and cook gently, covered for about 5 minutes. Shake the pan occasionally to prevent the vegetables from sticking. Add the water, seasoning, grated nutmeg and bay leaf and bring to the boil

Simmer, covered, for 30 mins. Remove the bay leaf. Liquidise in a blender or pass through a sieve.

Return the soup to the saucepan, add milk and reheat.

Taste and adjust the seasoning.

If liked, sprinkle with a little paprika or strips of leek before serving

TOMATO RELISH 8.5 KG ripe tomatoes 3 kg onions 4 level tablespoons mustard powder mixed with water to a thin paste 4 level tablespoons curry powder 3 kg sugar 1 bottle Ezi sauce 115g flour

Put in a dish tomatoes, onions and salt. After 12 hours empty all into a pan. When boiling add mustard and curry powder paste. Now add sugar and Ezi Sauce and boil for about 2 ½ hours. Ten minutes before end of boiling add flour made into a thin paste with water.
