State Parks MeetingBy Evan Kramer

The following press release was issued by Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department. Please read it and if you can, attend the meeting next Wednesday.

“The Oregon State Parks and Recreation Commission will meet July 20 at the Harbortown Events Center, 325 2nd St SE, in Bandon.

Commissioners. The Park has a series of trails and signs so you won’t get lost and along the trail to Blacklock Point a se-ries of small wooden bridges were built to take hikers around the trails which are often under water in winter. Other than that there is no bathroom facility, no visitor center, no campsites and no park hosts. It’s a special place and I’ve worn out two dogs – Myrtle and Honeybear and myself hiking around in this coastal park.

Curry County Commissioner and board chairman George Rhodes held a press conference last Tuesday that was report-ed on in detail by both the Curry County Reporter and Curry Coastal Pilot. You can access those articles online or read them in newsprint form at the Port Or-ford Library. Neither this paper nor the Port Orford News were invited to the “press conference” which Rhodes said this Tuesday wasn’t a press conference so the Pilot reporter must have misspo-ken.

I spoke with Commissioner Rhodes briefly on Tuesday morning to get some sense of what it is the County wants to accomplish with this land swap. Rhodes said the commissioners want ownership of the entire 1,300 acre Floras Lake Nat-ural Area to manage as a county park. He said he wanted at least half the park to be ADA accessible and that a golf course could be part of the county devel-opment of the property. He envisioned a recreation center on the property. He emphasized wanting to maintain diver-sity on the property. Rhodes asked the question if it was appropriate to let the 1,300 acres be taken over by gorse and said there were few citizens who used the park. He advocated opening up the park and making it the crown jewel of Curry County. He said the County could be managed better than it is now. He de-scribed the land as being flooded better than half the year. He said the County could raise much needed revenue with a long term lease with a developer though no specific developer has been named. Rhodes told me that idle land gets de-stroyed and that it needs to be managed. He spoke about the need to pay for pub-

lic safety in Curry County and that the county needs a permanent source of revenue to pay for public safety among other things.

See you at the Parks meeting.

The Airport DealThis letter is in response to recent inqui-ries about the intent of the Curry County Board of Commissioners (BOC) to pur-sue the transfer of ownership of Cape Blanco Airport to Curry County for economic development and commu-nity use. On behalf of the Curry County Board of Commissioners, I have had several conversations with the Oregon Department of Aviation (ODA) and the ODA Board of Directors. I have ex-pressed the Board’s interest in acquir-ing the airport and land to combine with the adjacent County-owned land, for the purpose of creating a new public County Park. The combined land could provide the Curry County citizens and visitors to our community with a public recre-ational area that includes accessible and well-maintained walking trails, a Nature

Park Interpretive Center, and potentially a world-class golf course, all of which will showcase Curry County’s unique beauty and natural resources and en-hance our existing County Parks.

In addition to the improved accessibil-ity to public lands, these County Parks will create ecologically sound environ-ments that encourage biodiversity and preserve native species. The proposal will include requirements for ecologi-cal development and landscaping ap-proaches that maximize ecosystem integrity. Such careful management of ecological resources based on sound scientific principles is essential for ob-taining and maintaining biodiversity in the Floras Lakes area. In particular, these improved management practices are urgently needed to prevent the loss and degradation of native species in this area as a result of noxious and invasive species, namely Gorse. While initiated for the purpose of local and regional economic development, the proposed County Park expansion and improve-ment will occur in harmony with the environment. Ecologically sound land management strategies would be ad-opted and implemented in the County Park for the promotion of biodiversity contained within these public lands.

With regard to the roles and responsibil-ities for the County Park management, a cooperative relationship between the County and a private entity would be established. If the development plan successfully completes the County’s due-diligence process, the proposal will permit use of the land via a long-term lease to a private developer or devel-opers. Through this arrangement, these private entities will assume responsibil-ity for building and managing the facili-ties and maintaining and promoting the landscape of these County owned-lands. Per the terms of a negotiated and ap-proved lease, the designated County Park property will be open to the pub-lic and will be a revenue-producing fa-cility for the County. Specifically, the County Park will serve as source of revenue through the lease agreement. This agreement will result in jobs and tourism that create additional economic development in Curry County. All Curry Citizens will benefit from both the cre-ation of an additional revenue resource for the County and the recreational op-portunities. Funds generated from the County Park will be a direct contribu-tion to the County’s general fund, which

finances the mandated services such as law enforcement and elections. In terms of a potential developer, to date four (4) development companies have expressed an interest in the proposed County Park. Any potential developer will generate their proposed development plan that includes details of their approach to appropriate land management, which will require County approval in order to ensure ecologically sound practices are employed.

The Application for Acquisition dated April 2011 is the only document to date presented to the ODA by the County.

As Chair of the Curry County Commis-sion I am excited by this opportunity to create a revenue source for the County, spurring economic growth and develop-ment for the community, while simulta-neously promoting an appreciation for the natural beauty and resources of the region. I look forward to sharing this vision with the communities of Curry County.

George Rhodes, ChairCurry County Board of Commissioners

Letter To The Editor,My name is Jackie Granados. I did not resign or quit the manager’s position at The Common Good, Inc.

I thank the volunteer workers at The Common Good, Inc. who supported, respected and considered me part of their family, as did I. I thank the citizens of Port Orford who supported and assisted the food pantry the past 6 years. The transition after Manager Frank Cramer moved away in 2006 took the work of dedicated individuals, which I commend.

During my time at The Common Good, Inc. we made appliance upgrades, Swedish Folk Trio Plays

“Sprida Ut Trio” brings Swedish stringed instruments, nordic costumes and energy to Zion Lutheran Church, Port Orford, Saturday July 16 at 7:00 pm. Some songs have been adapted to feature the Kawai Baby Grand in this “year of the piano.” Scandinavian cookies will be available at intermission on a donation basis. Tickets at $10 (18 and under free) available from Downtown Fun Zone, at the door, or by phoning 541-332-9002.

food preparation upgrades, and safety upgrades. This was done with grants awarded by The West Family Foundation and written by volunteer members.

I developed and maintained records and forms making the manager’s job straightforward. I communicated with volunteers making their schedules as consistent as possible. With the help of dedicated partners, I did my job in sustaining a USDA, Non-Profit Agency to the best of my ability.

With nutritionally savvy volunteer advisors, I worked on making our food menus as healthy as possible, often

buying budget friendly supplemental food.

I thank the clients of The Common Good, Inc. for allowing me to get to know them as individuals. Our conversations were lively and vital to building a common respect amongst ourselves.

My time at The Common Good, Inc. may be over but I take it’s simple philosophy with me. That being “Feed those in need with respect and dignity”.

Yours in Volunteerism,

Jackie Granados

Sixes Grange #856 NewsletterThe entire Grange membership would like to report that we are making steady progress on improvements to the old building. We built a handicap access ramp. We rebuilt the side entrance and reinforced our renovated double doors.

We designed a new lobby area to in-clude a nicely appointed information desk where visitors have access to bro-chures on surrounding points of interest, rest areas, accommodations, restaurants and landmarks.

We recently redesigned our Bingo room bulletin board to accommodate an-nouncements and upcoming events in our community.

There are always repairs to be done on such a vintage building and our “to do” list keeps us very busy. Maintaining such a large indoor space takes time and labor as well.

We are proud of our Marketplace Store. The store is open seven days a week for your convenience and the variety of merchandise will surprise you. We even offer a nice array of nutritious snacks. The coffee is on the house.

Come join us every Wednesday eve-ning for pot luck dinner and Bingo. It’s a great way to meet others in our com-munity. Dinner starts at 5, Bingo starts at 6:30.

Public Is InvitedThe congregation of St. Christopher Church in Port Orford invites the public to a service of Confirmation and Visitation by The Rt. Rev. Michael Hanley on Sunday, July 17 at 4pm. The 4pm service will be the only service on that Sunday. A celebratory potluck supper will follow the Rite of Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Those persons being confirmed are: Elaine Clark, Margery Heyman, Meagan Olmsted, and Linda Smith. The Rev. Canon Barbara Mudge extends an invitation to one and all for this exciting event in the life of the church. She may be reached at 541-347-1504 or on Wednesdays at 541-260-1419.

Another fund raising event is our monthly “Treasure Sale” which is a two day event held on the first Friday and Saturday every month. This sale offers a variety of vendors with an eclectic array of merchandise at bargain prices. New vendors welcome. We now accept non-clothing donations during Marketplace hours only.

So, as you can see we are making prog-ress. It is, at times difficult because these types of improvements and events take time and labor to accomplish. Our membership numbers are low which means more workload for each partici-pating member. Many members already devote entire days to their responsibility of the Marketplace and others work tire-lessly to prepare for each Bingo game.

Sometimes the workload can be over-whelming but then we remind ourselves why it is important.

Our volunteer work has allowed us to help organizations such as the Boy Scouts, The After School Program, Head Start, The local little league, The common Good, Curtain Up Theatre Camp and Shoes for Kids to name a few. It was our pleasure to provide a free of

charge Thanksgiving Day Dinner and St. Patrick’s Day Feed to the entire com-munity.

We enjoy being part of an organization that supports community and country. If you are interested in joining this worthy organization drop by the Grange any day of the week (they open at 10am) to pick up a form. Don’t forget to ask about the benefits available to members. We welcome your visit, coffees on!

Give A Life For LifeJodie Moen is one of the wonderful and special people who contributes to our community and way of life.

In 2006 she was diagnosed with advance Lyme disease that has now evolved into Parkinson’s. The combination is very debilitating, robbing Jodie of the quality of life that she once knew. Just recently bound to a wheelchair, she is not able to walk the beach that is near her home. Jodie has exhausted all forms of conventional degenerative drug based treatments.

In her search for healing, Jodie found the EmCell clinic in Kiev, Ukraine. The clinic is the world’s leader and pioneer of stem cell therapy and treatments dealing with many ailments including Parkinson’s. In fact they hold patents for this treatment in several countries including the United States of America.

Now facing the end of her trail she has found hope. A chance. She needs your help. If we all “Give a Life for a Life” and stand together the $20,000 needed for her treatment and travel can be raised easily. Several special fundraisers are planned. Collection cans have been

Lloyd Fuller is spearheading this initiative assisted by Mary Hathorn acting as treasurer. Lloyd can be reached at 541-332-6762. Additional volunteers include Susie Kohler, Jim Kuhn, Barbara Mason and Dave Bartholomew who is organizing a special “Jodie” Karaoke evening at at a local establishment.

Won’t you please demonstrate that you “Give Life for Life” and help? Donations can be sent to Mary Hathorn, PO Box 1296, Port Orford, OR 97465.

Each workshop begins at 5:30 p.m. with a complimentary family-style dinner where parents and staff can visit and get better acquainted. After dinner parents meet for a two-hour parenting session full of activities and lively discussions. High quality child care is provided onsite during the workshop for children 10 and younger.

To learn more about the Everyday Parenting Series or to enroll in one of our classes please contact Jennifer Stansell or Susan Golay at 541-251-3058 or email at [email protected]. Upcoming workshops, newsletters, and class curriculum information is online at www.socc.edu/positiveparenting. You can also check out “Pathways To Positive Parenting” on Facebook.

“Pathways of Positive Parenting Everyday Parenting Series” is an educational program intended for all parents. This SWOCC program is funded by the Oregon Community Foundation and the Children’s Trust Fund of Oregon.

“I recommend this parenting class to every parent,” a past participant said when asked about the class. “I learned a lot about various skills and knowledge for parenting. Parenting is the hardest task that I have ever encountered and I think every parent should attend.”

This gripping DVD exposes one of the fastest growing and misdiagnosed epidemics of our time. It will be shown at the

Port Orford Library on Sunday, July 17th at 3:00pm.

Letter To The Editor,Dear Friends: With summer almost half over, the Port Orford Christian Center is once again starting to get ready for our annual Children’s Fun Day. This event is held yearly to help provide school supplies for children in our community who are in need.

Last year, between 85-90 children from grades Kindergarten through grade 8 received all the school supplies they needed to start the school year. All of this was possible because of the generosity of the people and organizations in our community.

This year the event will be held on Saturday, August 20, from 11:00am-2:00pm in the gymnasium at the Port Orford Christian Center. School children, along with the siblings and parents, are invited to play games, eat lunch and receive their school supplies – all at no cost.

Neighborhood GardensIt’s backyard harvest time around Port Orford. That’s the latest trend at the Port Orford Farmers Market. The Neighborhood Garden table has become a place where locals can bring their homegrown items and sell them. Last week’s surprise was the arrival of some awesome spinach! It was gone in a hurry. Look forward to more homegrown arrivals as the summer heats up. See you on Saturdays at the Farmers’ Market.

This Week In The GardenBy Jennifer Ewing

Winter gardening has been the topic of the last two articles here in TWIG so let’s continue.

When I’m teaching garden workshops and talk about winter gardening, I always get the questions about how to protect the crops from the cold of winter. Do I have to cover the garden with plastic? Do I have to have a greenhouse to grow in during the winter? The answers are ‘no’ and ‘no’. When growing a winter garden you plant vegetables that love the chill and taste better than you can imagine due to their sugar content. The reason you grow these crops in the winter is precisely because they love the cold! Chard and kale are great in the summer but eat some after the cold sets in for that great taste sensation! For those of you who hate broccoli and Brussels sprouts because you have only eaten them from the grocery store, try some straight out of the garden, not bitter but sweet.

Territorial Seed Company out of Cottage Grove, Oregon, even puts out a winter seed catalog with selections especially meant to be grown in our Pacific Northwest winters.

If you’re still leery of this cold weather gardening thing at least try a few things this year (do it for me!) and see how easy and tasty these edibles can be.

No reason to let that garden space sit there empty when you could be eating spinach or a sugary carrot or have your own garlic next summer.

If you would like to help by making donations of school supplies, there will be a box at Chetco Credit Union for the items. To make a cash donation towards this event, just leave it with the ladies at Chetco and let them know that it’s for the children’s school supplies.

Thank you for all your help in previous years, and I know that this year’s events will be just as successful as those in the past!

A Gift of BooksChildren of all ages, and their responsible adult(s), are invited to help us unwrap packages of new children’s books, gifts from The Libri Foundation and the Friends of the Port Orford Library. At 10:00am on Wednesday, July 20 we will unwrap lots of books, read a couple of stories and wrap it up with some snacks.

All the celebrating is compliments of The Libri Foundation, a nationwide nonprofit organization that donates new children’s books to small, rural public libraries throughout the United States. A gift to the Foundation from Dan, Karen and Tim Halloran was used to match a donation from the Friends of the Port Orford Public Library. Another donation from Hal Berenson and Laura Ackerman gave our Library an additional $350 worth of math and science books.

Now who doesn’t like to unwrap gifts? Come to the Port Orford Library and help us dive into the best presents of all--books and books and more books!

Scholarships AwardedThe Oregon Student Assistance Com-mission (OSAC) recently announced the recipients of the annual Oregon Dungeness Crab

Commission Scholarships from their headquarters in Eugene, OR.

Elizabeth Lindley from Brookings-Harbor H.S. and Dillion Moreland from Knappa H.S. in Astoria, OR were each selected to receive $1000.00 awards, based on academic performance, ex-tracurricular activities and community involvement. Elizabeth, who gradu-ated with a 4.00 GPA, will be attending Smith College in Northampton, MA in the fall. Dillion plans to attend Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls and finished his senior year with a 3.85 GPA.

The annual scholarships are available to graduating seniors who plan on enroll-ing in a post-high school educational program and who are dependents of commercial crab fishermen in the state. The awards included one in honor of ODFW crab biologist Neil Richmond who died in a diving accident off of Port Orford reef in 1999.
