Beetle Mania

604.469.4500www.portmoody.ca

A healthy lawn is your best defence!Did you know that chafer beetles don’t like healthy lawns? Keeping your lawn healthy year-round is the best defence against damage by birds, raccoons and other wildlife that dig up lawns looking for beetle larvae. Port Moody restricts

the use of pesticides, but there are many ways to keep a natural and healthy lawn. These include routinely aerating, dethatching, liming, top-dressing, over-seeding, fertilizing, watering twice weekly and mowing grass to approximately 6cm high, and leaving clippings on the lawn to act as mulch. You can also consider planting low-maintenance plants such as Dutch white clover, thyme, heathers and ornamental grasses.

To check your lawns for infestation, turn over one-foot sections of turf and dig through the soil below. If there are more than 5-10 grubs per section, you may have an infestation. If so, start by roto-tilling infested soil (rather than removing it), to avoid spreading grubs. Then in July, if the weather is good, you can apply nematodes to infested areas. Nematodes are microscopic organisms that swim through the soil and attack the chafer beetle grubs. They are effective at

controlling chafer beetle infestations if applied properly, and will not harm plants, people or pets. You can purchase nematodes at lawn and garden stores in the spring or early summer. To be effective, nematodes must be stored properly (i.e. refrigerated) by retailers who can provide advice on how and when to apply.

The City is launching a webpage with information to assist residents who are dealing with chafer beetle infestations. For more info, visit portmoody.ca/chaferbeetle. We’ll be posting details on discounts for the purchase of nematodes soon!

Private Restorative YogaRestorative Yoga is led by Connie Meisner our Certified Therapeutic Restorative Yoga Instructor. Whatever you are experiencing, take it to the mat. Yoga can transform illness to health, injury to strength, and anxiety to joy. Yoga works on all aspects of our being – physical, mental and emotional – bringing us to a place of health, wellness and joyful vitality.

Restorative Yoga is a gentle therapeutic style of yoga that uses props such as blankets, bolsters and blocks to minimize the amount of work that the muscles are doing in the pose. Once placed in these supported passive postures you will experience the body and mind being grounded, safe and integrated. The poses are held for several minutes and often consist of only 3-5 poses for the private session (60 minutes).

The focus of the practice is to restore the central nervous system and the internal systems of the body. Restorative Yoga is a soothing and nurturing practice that promotes the effects of conscious relaxation and helps address specific health challenges.
