You think its sand beneath your feet. It’s the street. Its just that the vibe here is so chilled.

And yes, you really don’t need shoes. This is the most accessible paradise on Earth.

Port Douglas village is both gateway and destination. It’s a heady blend of stylish cafes

and funky bars alongside a century old Queensland pub. It’s boarding a boat at the

marina and not knowing exactly where you’re going. Its the seemingly endless stretch

of Four Mile Beach. It’s the possibilities of having everything ... and doing nothing.

You may have waited for a lifetime to explore the wonderland of the Great Barrier

Reef. Or you’ve decided to return because it inspired a passion in you that won’t

be denied. 200 kilometres of tropical coastline mirroring the Great Barrier Reef

that stretches alongside. 1,500 kinds of fish and 400 types of coral. How many days

are you visiting for? If you don’t swim or dive, don’t worry. You can fully immerse

yourself in the reef without getting wet. Isn’t that amazing?

Mythical jungles. Towering forests. Potent plants. Exquisitely fragile wild things.

And the sense that this has all been here for 100 million years. It’s an awesome

experience to enter The Daintree. Best appreciated from the perspective of a

local knowledgeable guide, in fact. Walk the tracks, watch from boardwalks, and

observe from the canopy. Be part of the living rainforest from Mossman Gorge to

Cape Tribulation. Night tours are even more inspiring.

You could surf the canopy of the rainforest. Or you could ride the beach. Think of

something else. Kitesurfing or parasailing? Okay. A hangglider or an ultralight? Okay.

Hot air ballooning or night diving on the reef (now there’s two extremes for you).

Its up to you. The most popular pastimes are swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling and

other activities connected with the reef. Like seeing it from the air on a scenic flight.

There are unlimited choices. Adventure seekers are welcome here.

A 50,000 year record of living in harmony with nature is very impressive. And you’ll

be more than moved by the grace, natural harmony and artistic endeavors of our

region’s indigenous citizens. Be guided on a journey of discovery through living

legends and sacred traditions in forests and ancient caves. Let yourself be aware and

you’ll be rewarded with the sharing of the sheer joy which lives in the hearts of our

Aboriginal brothers and sisters.

Its one thing to cuddle a koala, but could you share space with a crocodile?

You can get close at a wildlife park or in a river boat cruise. The photos will be amazing.

We have so many unique animals and birds here. Jabirus and tree kangaroos.

Bilbys and water dragons. See them in the wild on tour, or in the world class wildlife

attractions and displays here. Just don’t miss out. It could be the most memorable

meeting of your holiday.

Browsing through the dining choices here is an appetite stimulant in itself. Chefs chose

the choicest harvest from the hinterland, rivers and oceans and combine a dash of talent.

Waitstaff add a sprinkle of warm service. This is a slice of paradise. Oh, and did we

mention the seafood? From the North’s culinary capital of Port Douglas through the lush

rural sugar towns like Mossman to the epicurean delights of the Daintree’s resorts and

lodges, its all on a plate, so to speak.

The idea is to chill out, of course. But when the beat picks up, you’ll go with it.

Step into the groove and press the pulse of Port Douglas. Loose lounge vibes in

Macrossan Street, or gritty pub rock on Wharf Street. Spinning house at a waterfront

nightclub or Zen-like soloists at the Sunday markets. Music festivals in Mossman.

We have some exclusive acts up here. Don’t miss the cane toad races whatever

you do. No, really, don’t miss them.

To be welcomed like a guest and farewelled as a friend is one of the great rewards of

travel. You’ll be treated as no less of a VIP than Bill Clinton was. Chose the tone of

accommodation that strikes your holiday mood and match it with the multitude of

options. Are you a self contained apartment, a luxury resort or a bed & breakfast in

the rainforest? Perhaps a beachfront villa or a snug motel? Maybe you’re a relaxed

backpacker or even towing a caravan. Hospitable hostelry of all kinds is at the end

of the road. Come confidently.

Life here is more vibrant. The colours, smells, sounds seem more sharply drawn.

When you’re on a golf course at dawn and the scent of frangipani floats across the

breeze to you, you’ll get it. If you cast a line from the wharf and contemplate the

utter laziness of life in the estuaries - before you go into a frenzy to land your fish

- then you’ll understand. If you choose to share an ale or two at the pub, the locals

will happily tell you why they live here. And recommend a good real estate agent

when you casually enquire. Its not that we’re slow here. We’re just more chilled.

Sometimes, we even inspire ourselves through the events we experience. It can be

seizing the moment at a cultural festival, or sensing the intent of an artist on a small

canvass. It’s a moment of connection. Of realisation. Our Shire loves to celebrate

the sheer joy of life in the tropics. Life as we know it. The inspiration for our uniquely

creative artists, crafts people and fashion designers. Reef & Rainforest Carnivale is

about fun, frivolity and fishing. And arts, and food and wine...and just enjoying great

company. Care to join us?

There are extraordinary discoveries to be made. Excursions and adventures to be

seriously undertaken. There are tried and tested child-friendly experiences in our

Shire. There’s even free stuff to do. And resorts offer day care and special family

packages. It’s just great. If you’re part of the generation that discovered this place

as a single or a young married, chances are you have children now. Well, this is a

wonderful place for a family holiday. And yes, our restaurants really will welcome you

and the pushchair. Really.

Pampering is a necessity, not a luxury. In quality and content, our indulgence spas

surpass any in the world. Look what there is to inspire them. Secret remedies

from the seas and rainforest plants, and treatments inspired by 50,000 years of

indigenous knowledge. Our spa settings are all you could wish for - natural, luxurious

and indelibly unique. From soothing caresses under a rainforest canopy beside a

waterfall glade to the soft chimes of Asian bells signaling the commencement of your

indoor day spa treatment, you’ll find peace and pleasure here.

Some people just love to shop. Others acknowledge they’re browsing. Buying gifts

for loved ones. Or just looking. For that special something that will be the definitive

holiday memento. The piece that reflects the sense of place you’ve experienced.

A great Aboriginal canvas. A perfect item of jewelry. There’s bookstores, brand

boutiques and beachwear. There are markets (try a freshly made sugar cane

juice). And roadside stalls with fragrant exotic fruits and home made icecreams.

Take your time.

When we truly understand something, we place a higher value on it. Our region’s operators

collectively share the highest eco-tourism accreditation practices of anywhere you can think

of. And they are passionate about educating and informing. There’s a reason: what they

have to say will interest you and empower you with knowledge to care about - and for - our

spectacular, unique, irreplaceable environment. There will be others who wish to replicate

your experiences - for generations to come, we hope. Listen, learn, and, by keeping it real,

we can all ensure the delicate balance of nature will remain undisturbed.

Whatever you call it, it’ll be all the better for taking place here. This is a region well

experienced to catering to the needs of business events. In fact, we thrive on it.

And so do the companies who choose to come here. They’re impressed with the

service, the way we think and the stunning choices of outdoor, offsite venues. In fact,

they say we’ve got a great attitude here. Meet on the reef, in the rainforest or at the

beach. We can cater for that.
