Come and join more than a dozen organisations for this exciting event promoting safety in-and-around your home in the city centre. Be in to win prizes, get advice from friendly professionals and take part in the virtual reality experience ‘Escape My House’.

Firemen will demonstrate how quickly a kitchen can catch fire and what it takes to it put out. You can also get your child’s car seat checked and experience the impact the wearing of a seat belt can have on an accident’s outcome.

Get your taste buds ready because a fresh new market is coming to Porirua.

The weekly Cobham Court Farmers Market will be launched on Saturday 14 October.

The market will run from 6am to 2pm offering top quality artisan food and crafts from the people who make, bake or grow it, as well as great coffee and fun entertainment.

“This is going to be fantastic for Porirua and the Wellington region,” says Mayor Mike Tana. “It’s going to be something a little different and our revamped city centre is the perfect location for it. People can come here, enjoy the free parking or easy transport, and have a relaxed day out beginning at the new Farmer’s Market,” says Mayor Tana.

Farmers Market owners and operators Derek Rolls and Rick Unuia are already familiar faces behind the eateries Little Goat and the Soul Shack in the city centre kiosk.

They say they saw a demand and jumped at the opportunity when the market was put out to tender by the Council.

“It’s been about listening to our community. So many people want a market down here,” says Rick. “And it’s not just about the food. We want to offer the full market experience; with a percentage of our stalls allocated to crafts and artisan products…It’s about getting the balance right and keeping quality up.”

Derek says their market will be quite different to the one that operates at Waitangirua each Saturday.

“There’s room in the city for two markets, because we are targeting a different audience. Our whole idea is to offer as much ‘paddock to plate’ as we can from the people who make, bake or grow the products.”

A big adventure for Porirua

The Porirua Adventure Park, which is being developed by Select Evolution, a multinational Canadian company that specialises in leisure and adventure parks around the world, is due to open in 2019.

Based in the beautiful, native-forested grounds of Spicer Reserve, the park is expected to attract around 80,000 people each year.

Porirua Mayor Mike Tana says the $21 million investment in the city will benefit Porirua locals and the greater Wellington region. “We’ve estimated the potential economic impact over five years is around $40 million.”

The park will include free hiking, riding and fitness trails, a chairlift and other facilities.

“We’re particularly targeting organic and sprayfree growers, and the smaller niche growers,” says Derek. “Our aim is to have a core of regular top quality stall holders, with others rotating in around the seasonal changes, such as avocado and citrus growers.”

There will also be an opportunity for community groups and local education providers to get involved to showcase their work or run a stall.

Porirua City Laundrette makes a move

Business is bubbling for Ken Cotter who is relocating his laundry business from Kilkerran Place to Cobham Court.

The large, new and very comfy premises holds a host of gleaming washer/driers and Ken will also offer an eco-friendly alternative to dry cleaning. Ken says once he’s got a few things ironed out it will be business as usual.

Porirua City needs 1,000 pairs of feet to win the Global City Balance Challenge!

On Thursday 19 October competitors will spring into life and take up the global slacklining challenge to balance for 10 seconds.

The challenge will take place in the city centre between 4-8.30pm and is open to all ages.

Porirua is the only city in the southern hemisphere invited to participate

in the challenge issued by Gibbon Slacklines.

“We’re up against cities all over the world like Milan, Berlin, San Franciso, New York and Tokyo,” says Brad de Villiers, SlackCity Porirua.

The SlackCity Porirua team will provide the slacklines on the day and each successful entry will be added to the total. Competitors will be entertained by Whitireia DJs.

In the meantime people can get some practice at the Porirua City Council Slackline Park at Ngāti Toa Domain, the first one to be built in New Zealand.

The event is supported by Gibbon Slacklines, Palmers, Moana Rd and Porirua City Council.
