Inexistence of stores at street.

Lack of privacy in ground fl oor dwellings.

THE STARTING POINT: CITIZEN’S INITIATIVEDue to the inexintence of equipments and the lacking Administration’s attention, the citizens of Parque de Alcosa have organized themselves in several associations in order to meet the social and cultural needs of the neighborhood. These associations use to meet dialy in a dilapidated building which dimensions are far from being enough.

THE PROPOSAL: URBAN PROTHESISThe project consists of creating a new support that improves and promotes the developement of these association’s activities. At the present time, recycling culture is getting more and more important. For this reason, the main goal of the project is to provide those unused spaces in the neigborhood with a new usage ability. Thus, with the treatment of pavement and some light covering structures for the climate control, public space at streets becomes the proper place to develope all sorts of collective activities. In this way, the space between buildings will turn into a social cohesion focus; regenerating ground fl oor establishments and promoting the emergence of new stores.

ELEVATIONS: PREFABRICATED WOOD MODULES SYSTEMThe prefabricated wood system permits making all the assembly work faster, affecting the minimum ne-cessary the neighborhood routine. In addition, it is a lighter system, more respectful with the pre-existence.

FLEXIBILITY AND ADAPTATION TO THE USERIn order to meet the actual diversity of family prototypes, the project consists in a basic module which repetition can generate a broad catalogue of dwelling types and sizes. Storage, installations and cir-culations are focused in one side of the module, leaving empty the rest of the space and allowing the opening of different sizes of terraces to take advantage of the privileged views.

GEOMETRYThe load-bearing wall structure that characterizes the pre-existing building determines the size of the standard module. The modules rest on an auxiliary structure that transmits the weight of the new dwellings to the walls. At the same time, this auxiliary structure sepa-rate the wood modules from the fundations, increasing its durability.

The moduls have self-load bearing capacity and are totally fi nished at

the moment they are placed.

The creation of different openings allow the entrance of direct light inside the pavilion, kee-ping also visual relationships between the inte-rior and the baroque facades. Two structural suspended volumes in the fi rst le-vel, the “light boxes”, distribute the multifunctio-nal space downstairs and control the fi ltering of light passing to the rest of the areas. The courtyard will suffer the consequences of the underground pavilion and become a pla-yful and walkable surface that promotes the development of outdoor activities.

The Lagoon of Valencia Natural Park is a privileged place, where valen-cian vernacular constructions and the natural environment are still the main elements in the landscape.

Due to the strongpresence in the scenery of the stones at the shore, the project turns them into the protagonist element of the building. In this way, the restaurant is settled by the shore, becoming a part of it. Inside, the effect of the light fi ltered by the stones and the sound of water will keep the visitor in touch with the scenery outside.

The closing is built with steal gabions fi lled with stones, which are hold to the steal structural profi les and the carpentry. These are leant against an interior glass wall, that allows seeing the stones from the inside.

Placed in one of the most busy streets in Valen-cia (Spain), the project is settled as a light and ephemeral object that becomes part of the environment’s movement, appearing to be stre-ched until being disolved.

The way this idea is materialized is a metallic ton-gue which is fold, creating indoor spaces along its itinerary.

Godelleta’s watchtower is a defensive construction of the Muslim period and it was once part of the “defensive line of Valencia”.The tower is a private property and is an-nexed by other constructions, being a part of one of them. For this reason, the wat-chtower has become a particular case.

CONSTRUCTIVE SYSTEM: MUD WALL

Its walls are built with lime-covered mud wall. They are erected over an stone ma-sonry base. The wood framework was made U-shaped, in order to avoid the cor-ners. The thickness of the wall is reduced with the high of the tower. This reduction is made into steps, in which the wood slabs, nonexisting today, were supported.

EVOLUTION OF THE CONSTRUCTIVE SYSTEM

The start of the tower was built with an sto-ne-reinforced mud wall (1). In the interme-diate part we can detect a transition mud wall (2); and the last layers were erected with an stone-masonry wall made with fra-mework (3).

THE PRESENT STATE

Today, the tower is almost destroyed. It’s main peculiarity consists in hosting the kit-chen of one of the sorrounding houses in it’s fi rst fl oor

New usageAfter retorating the tower, it is converted into an information point for the village and a new more interesting access to the anexed house, that could be used as an orchard research center.

Villa Adriana was designed by the Emperor Hadrian during the II century as a rest residence. Currently, the archeological zone has several roman buildings of a great architectural and historical interest. The Baths cons-titutes one of the most important elements both for its dimension and for its compositional role for the central area of the Villa. The project requires two different interventions:On the one hand, the wall element that defi nes the elevation change between the upper and the lower terra-ce needs structural consolidation. The project consists of an exhibition ramp-pavilion that solves accessibility, at the same time that resist the deformation of the wall. This way, the lower terrace, the ancient space of the palestra, can be used for special summer events. On the other hand, the musealization of the Baths consist of recomposing the space created under the do-mes, which are half-ruined. A light metallic structure will recover the spacial perception of the coverings in the rooms where the pools were. Furthermore, in the frigidarium, the main space and the one which preservation state is better, the project reproduces the ancient covering with a sheet of concrete. Being opaque, the new covering recreates the play of lights and shadows inside.
