ALPI :'-IE LOOKS l)OWN ON SMOG! This may sound funny, , but for 30

years I have been talk ing smog! In 1923, when directing film pub

licity for Warner Rros. in Hollywood, I saw the first hazy indications of the terrible shadow that 1s no w ruining Los Angeles basin, threatens San Diego, even El Cajon.

Many thought I was a bit off my beam. I yelled so loudly about the coming menace, I got myself called a fanatic on the subject. But today the laugh is on them.

The smoke, gas fumes, haze, are here in S .D. County, and nearly every day we who live in A merica's finest climate, actually look down on that sea of murky pollution. Some f loats down the coast from 'Smog Angeles' as I call that madhouse metropolis 1

If you missed the S.D. Union's story ' Smog's Her ', b y Br ya nt Evans, on J an. 6, you better hie yourself into the Library and read it. T hen thank your stars that yo u're livi ng 1n A lp ine, above it al J.

SANTEE A LSO WANT S WATER Halph Gilbert, vice-chairman,

Ci ti z e n s ' W a t er Comm i t tee·, i s working with residents to obtain much needed water for that area. Fir s t meeting f or t he propo sed water district was last week J.n the school. The idea 1s to include Wintergardens, La Cresta, Suncrest and other areas ' west of Alpine'.

Note- Alpine seems to be frozen on activity of this nature, yet its future depends upon ample water if it is to progres s as a hightype resident1al suburb with successful outlying agricultural areas. We have climate, soil itnd sunshine with no smog, but we do not have ample water for the above.-C.I.
