1. 1. Introduction
demographic and socio-economic characteristics of
the population in mid-2018 at the District Council
(DC) district level. These statistics are primarily
computed based on data collected in the General
Household Survey (GHS) in January to December
2018 and the 2018 mid-year population estimates by
age and sex in each DC district as control totals.
As for findings relating to the demographic (other
than age and sex) and socio-economic
characteristics of the population in each DC district,
the relevant statistics are derived from their
corresponding profiles obtained in the GHS.

Census/By-census has been undertaken (the latest
Population Census and By-census were conducted
in 2011 and 2016 respectively) are compiled based
on the findings of the Population Census/By-census.
On the other hand, those estimates in the years
between the conduct of Population Census and
By-census are compiled by taking into account the
number of quarters (based on the frame of quarters
maintained by the Census and Statistics Department
and up-to-date information from various
government departments on new completion and
demolition) and the estimated profiles of population
residing in the quarters (estimates based on the
results of latest Population Census/By-census and
relevant administrative records) in each district.

derived from a particular sample would
approximate the population parameter to be
measured.
