Welcome to St. Rose
Welcome to Historic St. Rose of Lima Church! As
you can see, St. Rose is a magnificent house of God.
It was built a century ago by the Irish Community of
Quincy at the price of many sacrifices. This church, a
historical landmark of the city of Quincy, is
considered as representative of the Venetian Gothic
style: a mix of Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine
styles. Before the church was reopened in the fall of
2008, 3 marble altars were installed as well as a
matching altar rail and pulpit. The altars were
consecrated by the Bishop of our diocese, Bishop
Thomas Paprocki on June 10, 2012.
One of the main fixtures of this church is the amazing
collection of stained glass windows (1912)
characteristic of the Munich Pictorial Style. We have
begun their restoration and the first phase of the work
was done in the fall of 2012. With your help, the
project should be completed by the end of 2014. If
you wish to be part of this project, contact the rectory.
A brochure explaining the project of restoration is
available.
As St. Rose Latin Mass Community is not a parish but
a chaplaincy, when you join it, you remain a member
of your local Catholic parish. To join, just give us a
call. After both Sunday Masses, the community meets
in the hall to socialize. Members and Visitors are
welcome! Coffee & Donuts are available.

From the Chaplain’s desk: St. Rose of Lima External Solemnity
Rose of Lima has a special claim on our interest for she has the
honor of being the first person born in the Western Hemisphere to
be canonized by the Church. Only a little more than half a century
before her birth, the fabulous land of Peru had been discovered and
seized for Spain by the explorer Francisco Pizarro. In 1533 this
enterprising conquistador subdued the native population and took
over as his capital the inland city of Cuzco, with its strange Inca
temples, palaces, and great fortress. Two years later the seat of
government was transferred to Lima, a city on the coast, which came
to be called the "royal city of kings," because of its architectural
splendors.
The child who became St. Rose of Lima was born on April 20 1586,
of a Spaniard, Gaspar de Flores, and Maria d'Olivia, a woman who
had Inca blood in her veins. The infant, one of ten children born to
the couple, was baptized Isabel, after an aunt, Isabel de Herrara, who
acted as godmother. This ceremony took place at home, for the baby
was extremely weak. Several weeks later the tiny infant was carried
to the nearby church of San Sebastian for the remainder of the
ceremonies of baptism. By the time she was confirmed by
Archbishop (St.) Toribio of Lima, the name Isabel had been
replaced by Rose, and this was the name now bestowed on her.
Rose seems to have taken for her model St. Catherine of Siena, and,
like the earlier saint, she experienced so ardent a love of God
whenever she was in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament that
exaltation completely filled her soul. Yet Rose was not without a
practical side. Her father had been well-to-do, but when he lost
money in mining ventures, the family's fortunes reached low ebb.
Rose helped out by selling her fine needlework; she also raised
beautiful flowers and these too were taken to market. As she grew to
maturity, her parents were anxious to have Rose marry, and indeed
there were several worthy aspirants for her hand. Rose did not wish
marriage, and, to end the arguments and offers, she joined the Third
Order of St. Dominic, donned the habit, and took a vow of perpetual
virginity. For many years Rose lived virtually as a recluse. There
was a little hut in the family garden, and this she used as an oratory.
She often wore on her head a circlet of silver studded on the inside
with sharp points, in memory of the Lord's crown of thorns.
The natives were often oppressed and impoverished by the Spanish
overlords, in spite of the missionaries' efforts to alleviate their
miseries and to exercise a restraining hand on the governing class.
Rose was cognizant of the evils, and spoke out against them
fearlessly. Sometimes she brought sick and hungry persons into her
own home that she might better care for them.
For fifteen years Rose bore the disapproval and persecution of those
close to her, as well as the more severe trial of desolation of soul. At
length an examination by priests and physicians was indicated, and
this resulted in the judgment that her experiences were indeed
supernatural. Rose's last years were passed in the home of a
government official, Don Gonzalo de Massa. During an illness
towards the end of her life, she was able to pray, "Lord, increase my
sufferings, and with them increase Thy love in my heart." This
remarkable woman died on August 25, 1617, at the age of thirty-
one. She was canonized by Pope Clement in 1671, August 30 being
appointed her feast-day. The emblems associated with her are an
anchor, a crown of roses, and a city.

Weekly Feature: Answering Atheism – Ken Hensley
How can we evangelize an unbelieving world? In this talk,
Ken Hensley uses simple, effective logic to show how the
atheistic worldview inevitably leads to contradictions that
can’t hold up to sound reasoning. After hearing this talk,
you will be empowered to conclusively demonstrate how
unbelief leads to the destruction of morality, meaning, and
even knowledge.

Marriage Lobby Day Illinois State Capitol 401 South 2nd
Street, Springfield, IL 62701
Join IFI and Illinois families from around the state to take a
stand to protect marriage, religious freedom, parental rights
and the innocence of our children! Plan to bring your family
and friends AND organize your church to support this second
It is critically important that we have a strong showing
because homosexual activists continue to press for counterfeit
"marriage" (SB 10), which will affect all of society, especially
children and religious freedom. The groups pushing to pass
this bill are planning to be at the Capitol on October 22nd, the
day before our event. According to a 6-12-13 Windy City
Times article, they have dubbed it "10.000 Families March for
Marriage Equality."
The chief sponsor of the legislation to redefine marriage, State
Representative Gregg Harris (D-Chicago), is on record saying
that he plans to call the bill for a vote during the fall Veto
Session (October 22-24 and November 5-6). A number of
high profile politicians are also calling for its passage
including: President Barack Obama, Governor Pat Quinn,
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, State Comptroller Judy Baar
Topinka, U.S. Senator Mark Kirk and Attorney General Lisa
Madigan.
We cannot afford to ignore this situation! Illinois citizens will
send a strong and clear message to lawmakers by joining us at
the Capitol on October 23rd to rally, to pray and to lobby their
legislators.
Thousands of religious leaders from across the state have
responded, voicing their opposition to marriage redefinition to
local state lawmakers. They have urged their members to
stand for God-ordained marriage. And as a result, YOU stepped forward. Perhaps for the first time. Thank you! But
we need you to do it again, for as long as this issue is on the
minds of those who are in power to pass laws.
