Left Outside Alone-Anastacia–Notes

Activity type: gap fill, rhyming words. Grammar: Present Perfect Continuous.

Write “I started waiting the day I was born. I am still waiting” on the board. Tell students to make a Present Perfect Continuous sentence beginning with the words “All my life...”. The correct answer is the beginning of the song.

Time: 20 mins.

1) Write the following words on the board:

above air alone blame

despair feels game here

know love man pray

safe say understand way (three times)

2) Students match the rhyming pairs (NB: there are three different rhyming words for “way”). Point out that many are not in fact direct rhymes, but follow the vowel sounds.

3) Give each student a copy of the worksheet. Before playing the song ask them to try to insert the missing words, as listed above, in the correct gaps, based on context and the rhymes.

4) Play the song. Students check their predictions in 3) and complete the text.

5) Allow them to check their answers with other students, and then play the song again.

6) Correct, and sing together.

Follow up: The singer is disappointed with how her relationship has worked out. When was the last time you were disappointed by someone or something?

Key to 1): way – safe / despair – air / above – love / say – way / know – alone / feels – here / way – pray / game – blame / man - understand
