Poole High Street Study 2007
Presentation
Bournemouth University has considerable experience in undertaking retail revival research
projects and has recently completed a major project in Tidworth, Wiltshire and a further
project in Derwentside in support of the Local
Development Framework.
Bournemouth University and New Masterplanning – a dynamic,
creative partnership
Bournemouth University is home to the best retail course in the U.K. and we have extensive
links with over 400 graduates who occupy senior positions in national retail companies.
This gives us a competitive advantage when we want to elicit information regarding retail
companies’ aspirations in regard to market entry.
NEW Masterplanning has expertise in town planning, urban design, economic planning, architecture and landscape architecture. The four directors, formerly of Terence O’Rourke Limited have extensive experience of leading
major town centre regeneration projects in Poole, Taunton, Gloucester, Bath, York,
Slough, Weston-super-Mare, Truro, Bodmin, and Oldham etc.
How will we optimise our partnership approach?
By using high levels of mutual co-operation, commitment , experience and talent. We will also have regular face to face contact, telephone, and email interchange.
Both Bournemouth University and New Masterplanning have local knowledge, and
national and international experience.
We will set up a combined server so that all information isinstantly shared.
Key objectivesTo reverse the national trends that blight towns and cities in the U.K. by being more proactive
and building a waiting list of independent and national retailers who want to invest in Poole.
Our top priority is to build visitor numbers, footfall, and increase dwell time and retail
spend in Poole.
To develop an evening economy/leisure strategy.
Key issuesRetail competition locally is fierce
Poole High Street is very long and linear exposing a vulnerable stretch of the High
Street, characterised by empty properties and a clustering of charity shops.
There is considerable scope for new linkages and gateways to enhance the vibrancy of the
Town.
National/independent retail companies to be targeted to occupy premises in the lower part of the High Street
Independents Nationals Castle Cameras Boots Marketing design consultants HMV
Web design company Marks & Spencer Simply FoodSpecialist media company Next
Independent chemist ClarksIndependent opticians Café Rouge
Richmond Classics Dorothy Perkins
ConclusionBoth B.U. and New Masterplanning have
gained considerable expertise and experience by leading on
other retail revival schemes around the U.K, which have been of enormous benefit to their respective
clients.
It would be an honour and a privilege to conduct in depth market research and really make a difference to the future prosperity of our local Town.
