Message from the President

Dear Pontius Family Association Members,

At midnight on April 15, 2021, we closed the voting to adopt the

proposed December 5, 2020 Bylaws. By unanimous vote of

those 70 members and spouses who participated, the December 5, 2020

version of the Pontius Family Association (PFA) Bylaws is officially adopted

for immediate use. Unfortunately, our best efforts to get the January 2021

Newsletter and Bylaws ballot package to everyone went amiss. We know that

many members never got the mailing or received it late. Therefore, it was

decided to use First Class instead of Bulk rate mailing for this Newsletter.

Under the new Article XV procedures, the PFA Executive Committee invoked

the emergency status for the Association as of April 17, 2021. Therefore, all

of the current officers and members of the Board of Directors will retain their

positions until we can have an in-person membership meeting. This

emergency status will probably be rescinded this July.

On April 24, 2021, the Board of Directors met via Zoom. The Directors present unanimously voted to have the scheduled in-person membership meeting in Dayton, Ohio, July 15-17, 2021. We are anticipating an improved Covid situation by then. Being vaccinated is recommended, but not required to attend this meeting. We will follow Ohio State protocols in effect at the time. That may mean you will need a recent negative Covid test result, if you are not vaccinated. Social distancing and face masks may still be needed. Check online at: www.odh.ohio.gov. Sign up information and forms are included with this Newsletter. The PFA paid its respects and gratitude to our deceased former President

and Archivist, Jeannette Weaver, on March 6, 2021, in Troy, Ohio. The PFA

sent flowers and several of our members attended her Memorial Service in

person or by streaming. Jeannette was a long time and faithful contributor to

our Association. She will be missed and long remembered.

On May 13, 2021, Ruth Ellen Haukedahl will celebrate her 100th birthday.

Ruth Ellen is a Life member who joined the Association 51 years ago.

Congratulations and best wishes to her!

Our July meeting host team is Dawn Currie, Reta Wagner and Rachel Currie. They have worked with Ginger Johnson to complete the preliminary work but will be pressed to get all the arrangements set up by July 15. The meetings will be at the Comfort Suites near the Air Force’s National Museum in Dayton. The banquet will be at the WACO (rhymes with “taco”)

Air Museum in Troy (north of Dayton).

One of the National Museum of the United States Air Force’s main attractions is the recently restored original B-17 Flying Fortress of World War II fame, the Memphis Belle. It was the first American bomber aircraft to complete 25 combat missions over Europe. This indoor museum (at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton within site of our hotel) is huge. To give an idea of how big, the Memphis Belle is suspended from the roof. The ten-engine B-36 and the eight-engine B-52 are displayed on the floor. Bring comfortable walking shoes!

Our past President, Philip W. Pontius, was an 8th Air Force B-17 pilot who flew 26 combat

missions from Kimbolton RAF Air Base, England (he jokingly referred to himself as Pontius

the Pilot). His plane was named Stormy Weather. Philip wrote and in the 1990's published

a book on his wartime experiences called, The Tailless Bird. (If you have a copy you

would part with, the PFA would love to have a copy for the Archives. Let us know.)

WACO is famous for building biplanes and the World War II gliders used on D-Day and elsewhere. In its heyday, WACO planes were the most numerous to be registered in the

USA. WACO biplanes are still being built with modern instruments to the original specifications, but in Michigan. The museum has one on display, a beautiful yellow one. I have a personal connection to WACO biplanes. My mother was raised on a farm near Boone, Iowa. One day, a barnstormer came by in his biplane to offer rides in his plane. My mother scraped up the $5 and courage to go up in the plane. Her bravery as a girl, made me to de-cide to go up in a biplane myself one day. The day I learned that there was an outfit in Bealeton, Virginia, that gave biplane rides; I put this on my bucket list.

My 60th

birthday present was to fulfill this long-time dream. The plane that was used for passengers was a 1939 WACO UPF-7, one of 14 biplanes sold to the U.S. Army Air Corps as a trainer. The only one in the family that would fly with me was my 9-year-old grand-daughter, Kiara. Her mother was worried about Kiara going up in an airplane older than her grandfather, but said, “Yes”. Kiara got fitted with a helmet and red neck scarf and off we went into the wild blue yonder. We quickly learned how much heat from the 200 hp radial engine came right back on us. Now we know why the pilot sits in the rear cockpit! It was a great ride!

Closing notes: The yellow beauty at the WACO Air Museum does give passenger flights.

The Bealeton UPF-7 WACO is still flying and offering rides. Kiara is now a 1st Lieutenant in

the new Space Force, married with a 5-month-old daughter, Myla. Maybe the WACO plane

will still be flying in nine years?

See you in Dayton this July - Harry F. Pontious, President

Dear Pontius Family Members, This year’s reunion will be in Dayton, Ohio. Dayton is a city in western Ohio located at the confluence of three rivers and also has an amazing aviation history. In a small bicycle shop in Dayton, the Wright brothers imagined their first aerodynamic gliders. Ohio is the “Birthplace of Aviation” and we have an opportunity to see so much of the history that earned Ohio this title. The date of the reunion is July 15th through July 17th and we will be staying at the Comfort Suites, 5220 Huberville Ave, Dayton Ohio. There is a small inside pool. Free hot breakfast & free parking. CALL 937-425-6498. (Website: choicehotels.com will not be able to give you our group rate.) The hotel is holding a block of 20 King and 20 Queen size bed suites for us, each with a small refrigerator and sofa bed. The rate is $119.00 per night. When calling be sure to indicate you are with the Pontius group. Make your reservation early. Cancellations must be made 14 days prior to the reunion date.

Dayton has a small airport and our hostesses Dawn Currie, Rachel Currie, and Reta Wagner have offered to shuttle us to the Comfort Suites if you choose to fly into this airport. Columbus and Cincinnati are approximately 1 hour away & car rental is available. Please reserve car rentals early. This special location is near the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. This famous museum has a vast collection of aircraft from the 1900’s to near current times. They have a B52 bomber, Memphis Belle, and a Space Shuttle trainer. Dayton is filled with wonderful restaurants, craft beer breweries, antique stores and interesting shops, including a year-round famous Halloween store, numerous parks and an incredible variety of places to visit. There is the Dayton Art Institute, Dayton Museum of History, Carillon Historical Park with the 1905 Wright Flyer III (the world's first practical airplane); Living History Farm; The Boonshoft Museum with kids’ science exhibits & a small zoo; a trampoline park & even SunWatch, a recreated ancient Indian Village. Plans are underway to have a reunion-ending catered meal together at the WACO Air Museum, a very special Biplane Museum, the barnstorming kind that Harry Pontious & his granddaughter took a flight on duplicating his mother’s earlier flight. These flights are still available on weekends through the museum with advanced planning (see WACOairmuseum.org 937-335-9226).

Those who went on the German trip in 2019 are encouraged to share your memories & adventures. We will also have time to share memories of Jeannette Weaver. Dawn Currie is collecting any family history associated with flight and aircraft that you would like to share, at the reunion. Please consider bringing items to donate to the Raffle and/or goodies to share over the weekend. Call Dawn Currie 937-552-1198 if you have questions about the reunion or Dayton. The reunion Registration Form is enclosed and should be sent with payment to Bobbie Bongorno by June 30.

Blessings - Ginger Johnson, Senior Vice President

Message from our Dayton Reunion 2021 Hosts:

As Dayton was home to the Wright Brothers and is the Birthplace of Aviation, we’re looking for flying Pontius family members! If you have a copy of an old, or new, or anywhere in-between photo of yourself or any Pontius relative with an airplane -either private or commercial, as pilot, passenger, or onlooker – that you are willing to share, please send it to us. If there’s a story to go with it, and you are willing, we’d love to have that, too! Pictures and stories will be compiled and shared at the reunion. Even if you are unable to attend in person, we would love to have copies of your photos. Possibly, some might appear in a future Newsletter. Identify the Pontius member(s) in your photos, please. Any additional information, anecdotes, or stories pertaining to the photo or to flying Pontius’ would be wonderful. If you have a Pontius aviation story but no photo—we’d love to have that, too.

Please don’t send us your precious original photos — copies only — just in case the mail goes awry.

If you would scan and email these to Dawn Currie at [email protected] or mail to Dawn Currie, 4080 E US Rt 36, Fletcher, Ohio 45326, we would be delighted! Thank you, Your 2021 Reunion Hosts,

Remembrances of Jeannette:

"I knew Jeanette only through the annual membership meetings until I became President of our Association. While going back through Newsletters, Bridge Builders and meeting minutes for background information to help me perform my new duties, I learned that Jeannette was a valuable and long-term contributor. She was not often shown our appreciation for her diligent work on the complicated Pontius family tree and various other projects. Although already deeply committed to several Association projects, she stepped up to take on the duties of President when the need arose. I am grateful that I was able to tell her of my appreciation and thanks for all that she had done for years before she passed. She will be greatly missed."

Harry F. Pontious, President

Remembrances of Jeannette (cont.):

Jeanette Weaver has been one of the strongest leaders keeping us all together in the Pontius Family Association for many years. I first came to appreciate her when I hosted the Pontius Family meeting in Omaha in 2001. Jeannette was so helpful in guiding me through what was needed and keeping me calm when I was worried about details coming together. She was so organized and encouraging! Jeannette welcomed everyone who came to a Pontius meeting and made sure that new people received an extra-warm welcome! Her work as the Pontius Family archivist was monumental. She spent so many hours on the computer making entries and checking out details. I am so grateful to her for working on my own family line, as well as for all the work she did for all of us. Jeannette truly brought all the different Pontius lines together into one family, and I am so

grateful! Sheila Osterhaus

“I first attended a PFA reunion in 2013 and was welcomed by the most gracious Jeannette Weaver. Jeannette made me feel so comfortable and at home, me not knowing anyone, only knowing we were all related in some way, which was a nice feeling knowing we were all connected through our ancestors. I had come to know Jeannette was very intelligent and interesting. Jeannette knew all about ancestry and helping learn about their ancestry. She held the meetings with such ease, one could tell she so enjoyed sharing her knowledge. She was a wonderful caring lady and will be missed by many and everyone that had the pleasure of knowing Jeannette are truly blessed. We loved Jeannette, our meetings will never be the same.

God Bless our special cousin and her family.” Rita Christman

“I wanted to say how welcome Jeannette made me feel at the first meeting I attended. It was in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, about 5 or 6 years ago. I had been a member for years but hadn't attended a meeting. I brought my sister with Rita Christman with me. Jeanette was so welcoming. She talked about the Association and made sure we got our name tags and itinerary. The next morning at the “meet and greet’” she was equally welcoming, recognizing us right away, and she made sure to include us and keep us updated for the rest of the trip. Jeanette has helped me with genealogy of my family and gave me tips and info anytime I asked. I attended all but one of the meetings since that meeting and have always looked forward to seeing

Jeannette.” Denise Millard

“I knew of Jeannette long before I actually met her. My parents, Glen and Lois Bakehouse, met Jeannette years ago. They became good friends and visited back and forth over the years. When I finally met her in St Louis, I understood why my parents loved Jeannette and Fred so much. She has

been a mentor and a friend. She will be very missed.” Betty Hall

“So sorry to hear of Jeannette’s passing. She was a lovely lady and devoted hours of time to the organization. Laurannah Pontius Haynes

Remembrances of Jeannette (cont.):

Jeannette and Fred attended all our Pontius Reunions usually extending their travels to visit nearby

areas of our beautiful country. They also went on several German trips visiting with our German

cousins and building relationships.

Jeannette was always ready to help wherever and whenever needed whether it was guiding the

reunion hosts, taking reunion registrations, helping at the hospitality desk to greet people, making

nametags, or leading the meetings.

Jeannette served on the Board of Directors for since 1991 (30 years!), many as Vice President and

then more recently multiple terms as President. She has also been our Archivist for a long while – a

task that she loved doing. She spent many hours researching and documenting our genealogy and

assisting others who were trying to do their own. She was instrumental in getting the Association

set up with the Ohio Genealogical Society to hold our archives, and she and Fred took trips to the

Ohio Genealogical Society to give them our research for preservation. She also held Genealogy

sessions at our reunions assisting anyone who was interested with their personal research.

Jeannette headed our Cemetery Committee and attended a seminar to learn how to preserve head-

stones. She worked with our Bridge Builder Editors to get issues produced. She spearheaded our

Bridge Builder Indexing project to make researching the contents of our Bridge Builders much easier

and more efficient. She was involved many, many projects within the Association over the years.

Jeannette fought off several medical conditions including a hemorrhagic stroke and brain aneurysm

in 2015 and 2017 and led a courageous fight since 2019 against the cancer that eventually took her

from us. She would patiently explain her medical journey, but I never heard her complain or take on

a negative outlook. It was just the way it was.

I will miss being able to call any time knowing that she would always make me feel that she had time for me, she had answers for me, and she appreciated the work I was doing. I hope that she knows how much I appreciated what she did for me and for the Pontius Family Association.

Most of all, I will miss her friendship and her smile. Bobbie Bongorno

We thank Jeannette for her years of hard work, dedication, loyalty, kindness, and knowledge, and we thank Fred for sharing her with us.
