Library staff are always searching and planning programs that are appealing,
excite people about reading, and encourage visiting the library. In April, a variety
of programs for children, teens and adults were offered.
Money Smart Week, April 18—April 25, is a public awareness campaign
designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances, from saving for
college to planning for retirement. On Thursday, April 23rd, a Spanish language
presentation, offered by the Orange County Credit Union, provided 23 parents with
valuable information on raising money smart kids and learning how to create a
spending plan budget and manage money better,
Noche de Lotería/Lotería Game Night
On Thursday, April 9th, the library welcomed forty-six participants of all ages to
enjoy Noche de Loteria. This popular game brings the community together. It
allows parents to share traditional Mexican game with their children, but it allows
participants to socialize with their neighbors. This program allows
library staff the opportunity to share library services and programs
with participants.

On Saturday, April 11th, children were invited to bring their bears or their favorite
stuffed animals to enjoy a Teddy Bear Picnic with their families. Library staff
performed a story time, led a parade around the park, and engaged participants in
fun activities. This family-friendly program welcomed 53 stuffed animals and
their children and parents. Thank you Linell Mathisen, Library Board Chair, for
joining us at this program. .
The Ponderosa Joint-Use Library would like to thank Giant Teddy of Anaheim for
their generous donation of the softest, most huggable and life-size teddy! We
would also like to thank Manager Terah Dorsey for her efforts in coordinating this
donation, which brought immense joy to the children of the Anaheim community.
For those children who were unable to bring their own teddy, Benny as named by
popular vote, helped to spread smiles and hugs at the library. Thank you Giant
Teddy for sharing this gift with our library patrons.

National Library Week
“Click to Success”
National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American
Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country. It is a time to
celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote
library use.
During National Library Week, April 12—18, Anaheim Public Library planned
activities to raise awareness about the library and its many available programs and
resources. Librarian Marissa Chamberlain presented Test Prep and Career Database Workshop for Teens. Library staff provided a step-by-step demonstration of the Testing and Educational Resource Center and the Career Cruising resources that the library has to offer. This valuable resource has information on over 4,000 accredited schools, career modules, resume build-ing, over 300 practice tests, and many eBooks containing valuable study material and practice tests.

On Saturday, April 25, 2015, the Ponderosa Joint-Use
Library welcomed approximately 42 children and their
parents/caregivers for a wild rumpus! The Orange County
High School of the Arts, Where the Wild Things Are
Troupe, a group of student’s grades 8-12 visited the library to recreate this iconic
picture book, Where the Wild Things Are. Children enjoyed the story and then
had the opportunity to join in on the fun and show their best, scary monster acting
skills.
In addition to Where the Wild Things and to celebrate National Poetry Month,
the high school students introduced poems about friendships and acceptance by
Shel Silverstein. This was an excellent program and we are thankful to each and
every one of students, parents and Director of Community Programs: Pat McMas-
ter for helping us to coordinate this event and bringing smiles to our Ponderosa
community. Some of the students in the Troupe will be graduating in June and
pursuing theatre, we wish them many successes.

Back in March...
How to Train Your Dragon: On Saturday, March 28th approximately 42 eager
children and their families glided to the Ponderosa Joint-Use Library to train their
very own dragon. Janet Alvarez, retired elementary school teacher, led this fun and
interactive 1-hour workshop. Children painted, glued, and added other decorative
materials to bring their fire-breathing creatures to life. The newly created dragons
were of all shapes and sizes; some were green, purple, and bejeweled too. Dragons
had to sit and wait for the drying process and in the meantime, students shared
their dragon name, favorite food, and where they would sleep. Some of the dragons
enjoyed donuts and pizza, while others wanted to be healthy and strong, therefore
choosing vegetables instead.
All the dragons found a new
home with the wonderful library
children... until next time.

Back in March...
During the month of March, library patrons, of all ages, had the opportunity to
participate in library’s annual Jellybean Guessing Game. There were three
categories, K-3rd grade, 4th-6th grade and 7th grade-adult. This year, 186 entries
were received. Winners received variety of incentives thanks to continuous
support of APL Friends and Library Foundation.
A mother whose son was one of the winners shared with library staff that her son
was very excited to have won and that the library made his Spring break! She
shared that on his way to the library to pick up his prize, he said that winners
probably win a pencil but that was alright. He was super excited when he received
more than a pencil. His goody bag included candy, pencils, erasers, a book, a
game and stickers. Mom wanted her son to volunteer at the library so he could
payback library’s generosity.
