Hearst Castle Tour June 11Home of William Randolf Hearst. A newspaper mogul often mentioned in elite social circles as “American Royalty”. This majestic home moved the world renowned architectural historian, Lord John Julius Norwich to say, “Hearst Castle is a palace in every sense of the word”.

The tour includes viewing the 18-room guest house which faces the Pacific Coast, the Esplanade and Gardens, Casa Grande (the main house), and a short presentation of Hearst’s personal movies in the home’s family theater.

Enjoy a no host lunch in the Cantina or brown bag it on the picnic area and enjoy a spectacular view of the ocean and surroundings. Who is BOSS?The BOSS program focuses on active duty single Service Members from all branches of service, but BOSS activities are open to all MWR patrons to include the National Guard, Army Reserve, Department of Defense civilians, foreign service members and geographical bachelors. Anyone can participate with the BOSS pro-program. BOSS directs issues on quality of life, recreation and leisure and community service to the appropriate command or staff agency for resolution on the installation.

BOSS Components, Mission & VisionQuality of LifeQuality of Life includes those issues that Service Members can directly or indirectly influence to enhance their morale, living environment, or personal growth and development. Issues raised during BOSS meetings will be directed to the appropriate command or staff agency for resolution on the installation. Army-wide issues are forwarded to the Army Family Action Plan Conference for possible DA resolution.

Recreation and LeisureFun activities are planned by the BOSS council working in conjunction with the MWR Advisor and CSM. These events are geared towards the desires of the Service Members on that installation.

Community ServiceBOSS makes a difference by volunteering in community projects and events. This is always voluntary in nature, and Service Members find this to be personally rewarding.

MissionTo enhance the quality of life and morale of single Service Members, increase Service Member retention, and sustain readiness.

VisionBe the advocate for single Service Members to ensure they have a Quality of Life commensurate with their service.

School Age Services (SAS), located at the Porter Youth Center, offers Out of School care for children in kindergarten through Middle School (5th grade). We provide before and/or after school care for our military children and the community. Our leaders bring children to schools in the morning, and when children are dismissed from Marshall schools, our leaders walk them back to our center located across the street. The children have a choice of participating in various activities, ie physical fitness, life skills, Character Counts, conflict resolutions, computer lab, and are actively involved in our homework/Power Hour lab. We are an official Boys and Girls Club and 4-H member.

We have Family Nights once a month, which include parent & staff games and potluck. “Give Parent’s A Break” is conducted once a month to encourage parents to take a break while the children have a fun filled night of activities, to include dinner and a movie.

Children receive nutritious USDA approved breakfast, snacks and during school breaks they also receive nutritious lunches.

Full day camps are available for all breaks or days that school’s are out. A typical camp offers a variety of fun activities. We organize special events, field trips, hikes, carnivals and many presentations from a variety of community sources.

Children may be enrolled for instructional classes during their time in SAS. These instructional classes may include ballet, gymnastics, and piano.

The Porter Youth Center has been accredited by the National School Age Child Care Alliance. Our program hours are from 6:30 am to 6:00pm. All children must register in advance at our Parent Central Services Office (242-7765)

Smart MovingThursday, 16 June from 4:00-5:30 pm Learn about your next Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move. Topics included are: Using a Checklist, Knowing your Benefits and Entitlements and Budgeting for Moving. Registration is required.

When was the last time you tried to hula-hoop or raced around the bases of a kickball field with your five year old? This is only the beginning of the fun for our EFMP Families!

Family Recreation Program brought to you by the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) and Price Fitness Center meets one Saturday a month, with the hope that the whole family will be able to attend. Our group members include all ages and abilities; everyone has a way to participate in the fun. All EFMP Families are invited.

Please join us for the next session on June 11 from 10:00-11:30 am at Price Fitness Center Field for the next session; we’ll be getting carried away with kites and bubbles!

Parents must remain on site during the session and are encouraged to wear their sneakers and get in on the fun. Bring a water bottle and sunscreen.

Family Readiness Group

The FRG is an organization of Family Members, volunteers, soldiers/civilian employees, belonging to a unit/organization. Together, they provide an avenue of mutual support and assistance, and a network of communication among the Family Members, the chain of command and community resources. 229th MI BN Soldiers, Family Member, or other members of the DLIFLC Army team may find this a useful resource.

Armed Forces Team Building

Armed Forces Team Building is a fun program that was developed by military spouses for military

spouses. Come meet a new group of friends and learn about the chain of command, how to read an LES and much, much more. Classes are taught by military spouse on Tuesdays at the Stilwell Community Center.

Free child care is available with advanced registration. For more information and to

The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) is part of the Army Family Covenant’s commitment to improve quality-of-life issues for Soldiers and Families.

Whether you have just arrived or you have been here for a while, please take the time to stop by and see how our local EFMP Manager can support you, she will assist you in finding the resources that you need to make the transition easy for you and your Family. She serves as a resource to Service Members and Families of all branches:

The EFMP manager has an open door policy and is happy to take time to meet with families to address individual needs. Please seek out her out for information for all questions concerning exceptional family member needs. A few topics include assistance in locating:

When meeting, bring documentation that relates to the subject or issue you will be discussing. She will be ready

to serve you with an extensive resource and referral guide based on your personal situation.

The EFMP Manager can help as you consider requesting an evaluation for a child who is struggling in school for one reason or another, no matter if it is your first Individual Education Plan (IEP) meeting or a request for an update. This can be a challenging time as you try to navigate through the Federal, State & local laws and policies. She can provide you with sample letters to school officials, prepare you for what to expect from the process, and assist you in maintaining thorough and usable records. You will also receive information on your rights and responsibilities, preparing you to be your child’s best advocate. Since the IEP process can be challenging at times, the EFMP Manager will support you through the process to include attending meetings with you to take notes and provide support as needed.

As you prepare to leave Presidio of Monterey, she will aid in that transition as well by contacting the gaining installation to make arrangements for services on the other end, allowing for continuity of care. She will also help to ensure that your home records are complete and ready for the move; providing you with a checklist and copies of needed documents.

Have you been to the Veterinary Treatment Facility? The Veterinary Treatment Facility (VTF) offers vaccinations, an out-patient clinic, heart worm testing, microchip identification, health certificates, pet registration and over-the-counter sales. General information, over-the-counter sales, prescription refills, appointment scheduling, pet registration, and record sign-outs are available during normal office hours. Call for appointment dates and times.

When does your pet need a physical exam?Every pet should have a yearly exam with the veterinarian. Pets over the age of seven should have exams every six months. Pets age at a more rapid rate than people. Early detection of problems increases treatment success. California law requires a minimum of one exam per year at the distributing facility for prescription medications. This establishes your doctor patient relationship.
