Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)
Title: Research Experience in Information Systems for Undergraduates
Objective: Provide undergraduates opportunity to participate in a meaningful research experience in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science
Goals:Provide research internship that is rewarding, educational, and pleasant experienceProvide challenging and substantive research projects to stimulate creativityEnable interns to obtain full appreciation of how scientific research is conductedInsure faculty mentors closely monitor REU, plan research activities, and review progressEncourage interns to pursue graduate studies and future career in researchEncourage women and minority students to apply and participate in programRecruit applicants from a variety of colleges and universities to provide a rich inter-change of ideas – including primarily undergraduate institutions which are not research intensive
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITYBrooklyn, N.Y.
Polytechnic REUOn-going program since 1985
Supported by NSF plus corporate sponsors, individual faculty research grants, and an alumni donation
10-12 undergraduate research internships awarded each summer
Approximately 80 applications received each year
Individual and small team research projects in area of information systems(image and signal processing, wireless communications, VLSI, controlsystems and robotics)
Undergraduate interns major in electrical engineering, computerengineering, or computer science
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITYBrooklyn, N.Y.
Polytechnic REU
11 week summer program
Approximately 40% women and minority student representation
Approximately 50% of REU interns come from universities other
than Polytechnic
We attract students from nearby colleges (Cooper Union, City College
of New York, Columbia, Manhattan College, Stevens, Stony Brook,
Hofstra) as well as students from distant colleges who live at home in
the New York City metropolitan area during summers (e.g., Harvard,
Lehigh, SUNY Buffalo)

Polytechnic REU
Since 1985, 15 journal or conference papers were published with
REU interns as co-authors.
Since 1985, 72 REU interns have attended graduate school including
Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Cornell, Illinois, UC Santa Barbara,
USC, Manhattan, MIT, Michigan, Purdue, U Penn, Polytechnic, RPI,
